I'm sure my friend who lives there has favorite places, but thought I'd throw out the question. I've been reading Confederates in the Attic to prepare by tony Horwitz (sorry if that seems prejudicial to the South!) and I know I want to see some of the confederate history, but I don't have any other ideas.

Thanks y'all

Richmond VA resident here.

A must see is the Hollywood Cemetery. Especially on a day that is nice enough for an outside picnic. At the top of the hill is President's Circle and there are some great views of the city and River. I always like to go there at lunch time (I work within a mile of there) and enjoy the sights and sounds.

I know it sounds strange having a picnic in a cemetery but when you are there and see it, you'll understand.

Richmond-ite too!

I took my Mom to see the Museum of the Confederacy:

Fredericksburg isn't far, and it is steeped in battlefields and tradition. Old Downtown Fredericksburg is really cool. Of course, Williamsburg/Jamestown are close if you have extra time.

If you like gardens, Maymont is beautiful as well as Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens…

I'm in Fredericksburg. There is so much in the 'burg. What dont you want to see is a better question.

Is there a meet up in the works?

Make sure to take a slow drive out Monument Avenue and to then cross the James River via the Nickle Bridge. Canal Walk and Shockoe Slip are fun, too.

Hi Nora. I agree with all the recommendations. Petersburg National Battlefield and Pamplin Historical Park are just south of Richmond. Also, Appomattox is only a couple of hours away. And there are some awesome sites in Fredericksburg. You could make a whole historic day within a 5 mile radius in downtown Richmond visiting the (Edgar Allen) Poe Museum, St. John's Church where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me liberty or death" speech, the Museum of the Confederacy, the Confederate White House, and Hollywood Cemetery.

Don't forget the VA Museum of Fine Arts - they have the largest collection of Faberge eggs outside of Russia - just gorgeous. Also Maymont Park, particularly when it gets a little warmer, as well as the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. I'm not from Richmond, but I lived there years ago, and there's just SO much to do and see. Oh, there's Poe's house too! Hey Kelany - I'm 30 minutes due east of you!

I pass through Richmond regularly. And I have never passed up an opportunity for Buzz and Neds BBQ....you can see where my priorities lie.

Ooh, if there's a meetup, I'd be there too - I'd much rather drive southbound I95 than northbound.

Well if you're considering Fredricksburg, might as well make the drive to Manassas to see the battlefields. If you want anymore info feel free to PM me.

I'm in the Williamsburg area not far from Richmond. Tons to see here too! I'm also up for a meetup!
