pft. I own all of you. We had a reel to reel:

Not exactly like the one above - but close. We also had the full set of the World Book Encyclopedias AND the full set of the World Book Dictionaries. I'm guessing that was before someone figured out how to put all those definitions into one big book.

when MTV played just music?!

I miss this. I spent hours watching music videos on MTV and VH1. I enjoyed 'pop up video' as well. I spent so much time watching videos... I recorded them on VHS tapes. I still have the tapes somewhere. Maybe I should look into putting them on dvd.

I only remember using my portable cd player in my car. Maybe on car rides too, but the batteries didn't seem to last very long.

I still have my walkman around here somewhere. I used to keep a spare key inside of it in the garage, when I had a house.

DD (about 8yo then) once saw one of those visor holders for CDs. She asked us why they had all those movies in their car.

I had to explain to her that once upon a time, music came in other ways besides MP3s and streaming. That there are DVDs for movies and CDs for music.

Yeah...I feel old all the time. Especially when you think I vaguely remember 8 tracks.

I remember when the new tech of CDs came out and how amazed dad was that he could listen to Simon and Garfunkle almost as clear as it was when he saw them in concert.

Cellphone? No there was a rotary dial phone on the kitchen wall with a coiled line attached. Every teen learned how to stretch the cord until it could reach the bathroom. You spend the night sitting there talking to the boyfriend in privacy.

I remember the rotary phones, they were a bitch to use when calling in on radio contests. I can recall when we got our first "push button" phone, yellow with gray buttons. My God we were now the "cool" family!

speaking of Mcdonalds....

I remember when they built the first fast-food place (yep, McD) in the small town where I grew up and it had, gasp!, a drive-thru!! First time EVER that I had seen such a thing. Of course now it's the opposite...how often do you see a fast-food place without a drive-thru?

And the rotary phone, yep, remember those too. We rented our avocado-green rotary phone from good ol' Ma Bell. No one had the option to "own" a phone. It was strategically placed on the kitchen wall. Remember how you'd yell at the top of your lungs when you answered and it was for someone else "COME GET THE PHONE!! YOU'VE GOT A PHONE CALL!!"

We were the first house on our street to own a microwave. That was big news in a small town

I remember our McDonald's didn't have a drive-thru, hell you couldn't even "go inside" to eat. You could only walk up to one of five windows and place your order.

Man when then remolded it to an indoor eatery people were walking in as if they were just dropped down from another planet.

MissesJai - I still have my TEAC reel-to-reel! It is a four track player and recorder, and it still works. I think it has a headphone jack, but it also weighs about 400 pounds, which excludes it from the walkman category.

I remember when my parents got me my own separate phone line for in my room...I was living large!! But of course if I was down stairs and my friends called my phone upstairs, they'd just end up calling the house phone which would piss my dad off to no end

he'd say "what good is it that we're paying all this money for your own line when your friends still tie up the house line!" Poor dad

did anyone else have to act as the antenna for the TV during a really important football game?

Yes! What's worse, I'd adjust it, step away, and it would act up again so my mom had me hold the tinfoil and "position" myself for the best picture. Usually I'd be holding my ankle while my leg's stuck out in the air and she'd be like, "Perfect! Now stay there!"

Sheesh, Mom!!!!
