I would dread them because we would come in the door and he would just disappear

Oh yes, me too!
After DDay when I mentioned being abandoned at parties he asked "why do you think I took you with me"
I said "for a designated driver"
He had the nerve to look pissed off at that answer. I think it hit too close to the truth for him.
