I'm a senior (going onto graduate school) in Public/Global Health, and I've had to take many classes on nutrition, disease, and am currently in food/stress/health.

Gaining weight by eating sugar and nutritionally empty clarions will not do anything, ANYTHING, for your health. Honestly, you're probably be better off being underweight. Depending on your cortisol levels, it could result in gaining abdominal fat, which is incredibly unhealthy.

I would gain weight through protein/fats, and building muscle (if you're so inclined).

Did your doctor tell you why you need to gain weight, or is it purely for aesthetic purposes? Either way, I'd definitely see a nutritionist.

Thanks for the info Want2help.

Did your doctor tell you why you need to gain weight, or is it purely for aesthetic purposes?

She said that my BMI fell into the underweight range. Gaining 20 pounds would put me into the healthy range (just barely). Iíd also be at the weight I felt comfortable with for many years; itís not really an aesthetic reason, itís a weight at which I felt healthy.

Want2help when people are truly underweight we don't recommend weight gain "purely for aesthetic" purposes. Being underweight puts you at extreme risk for becoming I'll from just about any bug you come in contact with. Your immune system and decreased protein and fat levels prevent you from getting well quickly and allow you to stay ill when you catch something everyone else dosent get. I. Addition you will be wiped out for a lot longer when you are well.
You also tend to have lower energy levels and stamina when you are severely underweight.

Mel you Har gotten pretty much the same advice from all of us here high protein full fat foods.
Making sure you are getting at least 2000 calories a day and of course keeping track Of what you are eating.

me: the shake that I took was called Mammoth 2500 but that was years ago. 2 shakes a day added 2500 calories to your daily diet which is supposed to add 1 pound a week. Took me longer than that to gain the weight but that was 20 years ago and I have been keeping between 125 and 130 since then.

Unless I'm real careful, I drop weight.

Careful - a banana every day. Oatmeal and yogurt as snacks. Nuts, cheese. Potatoes. A baked potato is fast.

For nutrient dense, I go by weight. Fruit is heavier that chips. Mix up the colors of your food. Orange & dark green are good.

I'll make up a quiche, and eat that for a few days.

Thanks to all of you for the great advice. I think Iím on the right path. There isnít a ton of great information out there for people trying to gain weight, and I really value the input youíve given.

High protein, full fat foods, 2000 calories/day and a food diary. Bananas and smoothies. Granola and yogurt. Nuts and cheese and potatoes. Visit to a nutritionist or dietician. Visit to metaís and janaís houses for lessons in eating correctly. Visit to tushnursesís home for a meal (Iíll bring the gooey butter cake for dessert, even though I realize thatís probably not what you meant as a quality high fat food).

Thanks gardenparty for sharing your story. Iím hopeful that I can be where you are someday soon. I realize it will take a bit of time. Congratulations on your success!

Got any thoughts on your loss of appetite, reasons for? And why food is so unappealing presently? (I find it incredibly appealing currently, so please come visit me as well).

What about doing an exotic cookery course to regain interest in food or something? Or trying new restaurants with h or a girls supper club. Or, or, or...

Maybe a long walk in the Hindu Kush would do it?

5ft 9 and 117lbs. I don't look good!

McDonald's milkshakes, full fat milk, cheese, carbs along with your normal healthy diet.

Going to the gym can help too. Try not to do much cardio but weights will build mass.

Hi Edie! Iíd love to have a meal with you the next time Iím out your way. But please donít be offended if I canít finish my plate. Iím embarrassed by this problem and donít want to be impolite by rejecting someoneís cooking.

Causes of my loss of appetite? I really have no idea. Stress, perhaps. Itís certainly been a stressful year. Although I doubt my current life is more stressful than most othersí. If thereís a medical issue, Iíll leave that to my MD to figure out. I found a nutritionist yesterday that I think my health insurance will (partially) cover.

I like your ideas of cooking classes and the like for getting back to food interest. I do watch Masterchef UK without fail; I think thereís a new episode tonight?

NoLongerWantHim: Yes you read that right. Gooey butter cake. I spent much of my summertimes in St. Louis as a kid, and my grandparents would often get cakes from a certain bakery. A few weeks ago I had a craving for gooey butter cake and so I ordered one from the bakery. It arrived promptly and well packaged for its journey. It was divine.

BrokenButTrying: Good advice - I think some kind of weight building exercise is in order. Iím sorry youíre also dealing with being underweight; itís pretty unpleasant. Take good care.
