Learning to travel via car/hotel vs rv. It seems like hotels and other places offer discount if you are member of Triple AAA. Is it worth the $?

I rarely use AAA for discounts. I can find better deals online usually.

BUT I get it every year. It has paid for itself with tows, jump starts, keys locked in the car.

I wouldn't not have it.

I rarely use it for any discounts but the fact that they were there within 20 minutes of DS17 breaking down on a back road as a thunderstorm was quickly approaching a week ago makes it worth every penny.

They have also came to my rescue for dead batteries and to unlock the door as my keys taunted me from the middle console.

Ditto to what the others have said. We've used it for locking keys in the car, dead batteries, tows, flats, running out of gas and stuff way more than hotel discounts. It does work for discounts when you find yourself unable to stay awake on the road and having to just pull in to whatever hotel is available, but if you're preplanning you can almost always get better rates online.

But I've always been surprised that their cost of membership is so low - we've gotten probably 10x the value for our membership fees, and we don't even have the "fancy" membership - just the regular. Especially good when you're traveling away from home and you get a flat or run out of gas. Who else will you call in the middle of nowhere to come and help you out?

Yes it is worth it.
I don't think I've used the discounts much, but damn has saved me a fortune in headaches, and stress.

My MIL actually gets us a yearly enrollment for Christmas. What a wonderful gift.

Use the triptik feature and also they've changed a couple of tires and pulled me out of a ditch.

I wouldn't be without it.

If you are traveling, it doesn't hurt to ask if they accept AAA for a discount. (Or AARP)

Our car insurance provides roadside assistance as part of our policy - no need for AAA.

It is eminently worth it for the towing, keys locked in the car (or lost while hiking in Sedona ), dead batteries in the middle of the night at the airport, flat tires on the way home from taking mom to the hospital in the middle of the night

The hotel discounts are good; I've used them many times. The only time I got better prices was when I was a government employee and could get that rate. You also get discounts at other establishments and dining places. There are a lot of them. (The only one that springs to mind is a 10% discount for Payless Shoes )

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

Absolutely worth it!

Our car insurance provides roadside assistance as part of our policy - no need for AAA.

Lucky2HaveMe, Be careful with that. My brother got a nasty premium increase and found out too late that the flat tire and locked key help counted as insurance claims against the policy. Check with your agent to be sure that's not the case with your agreement.

As far as discounts, typically you can only use one discount and some online offers are better.

As far as using it when you have car trouble. It is great for all the reasons other people here already mentioned.

AAA even covered a case of locked keys in the car when I was in a friend's car. She had locked her keys in the car while we were out to lunch together. She did not have AAA but I did. They happily came and retrieved the keys.

I don't have a car but still have AAA. I'll use it for the hotel and car rental discounts until I'm 65. Some hotels start discounting at 55 though.

I don't book online because I prefer a generous cancellation policy.

I book two or three rooms a year so it pays for itself at the non- auto assistance rate (AAA-lite).

I've had it for over 20 years, and it has paid for itself with the roadside assistance. We get the "plus" policy that includes up to 100 miles of towing because we are in a rural area and the basic policy only covers 7 miles. If you are going to be doing any real traveling, that extra 93 miles can be a great thing if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere! We have also used it occasionally for discounts. Well worth the cost (and peace of mind knowing my kids are covered as well).

It has been infinitely helpful throughout many an old car, but I also reap the discount benefits. Having no health insurance, I was able to save on both my eye exam and my new glasses. I've saved on shoes, travel, and even pretzels! Well worth the investment!

I too had this with our insurance, and most plans offer it now. HOWEVER if you tell them you don't want it or need it....They take a bit off of your premiums. For us it was a significant amount. This is with two major providers that advertise a LOT.

Also it takes them one heck of a lot longer to get someone out to you, because they have to go through their subcontracted providers.
