I have an associates degree in early childhood education and a bachelors degree in psychology (which, I have learned since graduating college is basically useless).

After I graduated BH and I got married and then had our daughter a couple years later. I was also diagnosed with narcolepsy after graduating college...before my diagnosis I always told myself I was going to go back to grad school.

I have been out of school since 2007. I have recently started thinking about going back to school for either occupational or physical therapy...maybe at the least an assistant level.

I think now that my DD is a little older it will be easier for me to go back...and it will give me something productive to do while my husband is at work.

But I am so scared to go back and dont know if I can handle it...I dont know if I am ready or if I should just forget it all.

Alyssa - What are you scared of? You have finished a four year degree already, so you know what is required to be successful in school. So why don't you write out (on here if you would like) what your goals are in getting the degree, potential hurdles, and how you can over come them?

My major hurdle and reason I am scared to go back is my narcolepsy. ...I wasn't diagnosed until after I finished school and I remember how much work and energy I put into school....reading, projects, papers, etc. And I know my limitations.....some days I cannot even stay awake while driving home or sitting on the couch watching tv....so I am afraid how I am going to read and write papers . I am worried how I am going to juggle being a mother, working, and going to school....my body simply wont allow me to do those things.

But I want the education and want to have something to work towards...

Alyssa,

What kind of treatment are you getting for the narcolepsy? Can you manage it with routine, diet, and medicine? I don't know much about the disorder. Remember that schools must accommodate medical conditions so keep that in mind with looking at the school angle.

Have you considered trying it a little at a time? For example, taking one class to see how you manage the work load and what adjustments you can make towards this?

I can't speak for OT school but PT school is a bitch. I'm glad I did medical school. When the PT people start talking to me about every little muscle fiber's rehab my eyes glaze over.

We have great drugs to treat narcolepsy. But NO drug can make boring material worth being awake for. Just make sure your education program is in something you find fascinating.
