My kitty is the sweetest thing. I adopted her from the MSPCA, well more like she adopted me. I was walking around the cat area looking at all the kittens. I had settled on one cage when my husband (then boyfriend) said "Don't settle on one cage, look at all of them first." So I did. As I'm walking past one cage this cute little black and white kitty with double paws gripped the bar of the cage with one paw and grabbed the shoulder of my coat with the other paw. I picked her up and she crawled right onto my shoulder. She's been there ever since. She's my kitty.

18yrs later...

She has been going under DD7's bed a lot which is something she never does, ever. Then last night I noticed that she was walking rather stiff. This morning it was worse. She was under the bed all day. When she came out her hind feet slipped out from under her when she was in the kitchen. She takes a few steps and her hips and hind legs give out and she falls. You can tell she's making an effort to keep her legs working. I have a vet appointment for her tomorrow morning, we'll see what the vet says. We're all very worried about her. She walked around the office chair I'm sitting and she tipped into the wheels. She's now laying at my feet right now purring. She wants to be right with me. I'm afraid to move around too much because I don't want her to follow me and get hurt.

My poor kitty

Thank you NIK. I have her laying on my bed now. That way I can see her and she won't follow me around.

She's such a love, I don't know what I will do without her.

SIMPLYDEVASTATED

OMG! Same thing recently happened to my cat.

Your kitty might have had a stroke like mine did.
Google "saddle thrombus in cats."

Usually there is a poor prognosis. Their hind quarters and legs can hurt them a lot and they will be vocal about it. Mine was.

Is your kitty still eating? That is a good sign.

My cat (older like your kitty) is very slowly making some progress over several weeks.

I had to take her food to her at first. Gradually her appetite increased. She sleeps in a box under my dining room table or under my bed (never used too).

I would take her out and make her walk back to her box several times a day, increasing the distance gradually.

She now gets up on her own and walks to the kitchen for her food. She gets up to use the litter box. She doesn't holler when I gently pick her up anymore.

Just like humans, the sooner the stroke is caught and they are given blood thinners, the better the out come.

Let me know what your vet thinks it is.

Good luck.

Thank you so much Shiloe (Where did you come up with your screen name? My son is reading a book about a dog named Shiloe. Anywho...). I will look into that.

She isn't crying in pain, so that's a good sign, but you can tell it's bothering her. She's never been a big eater, mainly she licks the gravy from the wet food and leaves the rest for our other kitty. She had a bit of food this morning, but nothing else.

I will let you know what the vet says. I hope it's good news. I'm worried because of her age.

Thank you everyone! I will keep you all posted.

In my other thread I have a job interview coming up. The recruiter sent me a test message to make sure it went through and I responded late (what I felt was late) and I said "Sorry for the late response I was calling the vet for my cat." She responded and sent me a "get well soon kitty" image. That was so sweet of her.

That's an awesome name, Shiloe

Thank you, hexed.

She seems to be walking worse. I'm not sure if it's because it's at night. I don't know. She tried to walk to her water bowl and she had walk along the dinning room chairs otherwise she would have fallen over. Before I went to bed she looked like she was walking drunk. I saw her fall over a few times.

Her appointment is tomorrow. I hope the vet knows what's going on

Has she recently had a wormer? If not DON'T do it!! I'm just asking because the wormer for roundworms can cause neurological effects.

In a couple hours she's off to the vet. Hopefully I'll have good news to report.

Thank you.

I watched her walk this morning and she started off fine. The more she walks the worse it gets. Ten minutes after I first saw her her legs started to give out and she almost fell.

We're back.

Good news and bad news...

First the good. It's not life threatening and there's no cancer. From the look of the x-rays she's in perfect health for a kitty that's 18 (approximately 90 in cat years).

The bad news. Her spine is fusing together. The disc's as they get closer to the pelvis are fused and bright white according to the x-rays. Which is why she's walking wobbly and falling.

We started her on prednisone today. I gave her her first dose a few minutes ago. The vet wants me to give him a report in 10 days.

If that doesn't work then there's more aggressive treatment but then she'll have to have weekly blood work and monitor her kidneys and heart etc... so then the question of quality of life comes into play.

Lots to think about...
