Saw this the other day while sitting out back. Called in the neighbors to get it away from my elderly neighbor's house. Right before I saw it, a bird had been pecking the crap out of it (and DID manage to injure it). I thought maybe it got one of the babies, but I saw them all after that.

You need to move. I'm sorry.

ETA: Your mulch looks good. It looks like you just did it. Oh wait, I think that's pine straw. Still looks good.

It's not a dangerous snake. We just coaxed it back into hiding and wondered if it was the same snake we had in the house last year.

That's my neighbor's yard, but, yes, they just re-did the pine straw. I don't like too much mulch because it's, well, snaky .

When I saw the pics, I lifted my feet off the kitchen floor. I'm pretty sure that snake didn't make it's way to my kitchen. Plus if it had, lifting my feet 5 inches wasn't going to help me.

Like it matters. I would not be coaxing the snake. I would be running and screaming.

Looks like a pile of black rubber in a few shots.

We've had a few black snakes in our area... but none quite that large.

When I first saw it, my whole body went from sitting down on a little wicker loveseat to standing up on it screaming, "SNAKE!". I didn't think about it, it just happened. I didn't get anywhere near it, but others did. I used a zoom lens.

I thought this one would look like a baby compared to Florida snakes. It's a black rat snake and not quite full-sized, yet. They can grow to 8 feet long- AND they climb trees and stuff! Fortunately, we don't have many trees, anymore!

Thank you so much for that little bit of info. I'll be sure to be thinking about that this week as I brush past tree branches on my mower.

When we lived in a much snakier place, I was telling Waywardson not to freak out if a snake fell from a tree because it would probably be a rat snake and he said, "If a snake falls from a tree, I'm sh!77ing my pants, I don't CARE what kind-of snake it is!!".

ETA: my neighbor saw it hanging around in a tree a couple of days before this happened!

I guess the "good news" is it is a rat snake. Not that any snake is a good snake unless it's dead, but I'll trade you that rat snake for my two copperheads this year....ewwwwwww....

Heck, NO!! Copperheads are really scary to me because they are so hard to see! Sometimes, a rat snake will eat other snakes, so I'm hoping it will keep the bad snakes away.

We live near a lake and with all the osprey and hawks around here... snakes become snacks early in their lives... hence not too many big snakes.

We're also pretty low in the rat/squirrel population too for the same reason.

Oy the snake/human relationship is a complicated one. I know that mythologically speaking the snake has gotten a pretty bad reputation. The physical revulsion thing that a number of posters here have described seems to be specific to individuals. I don't have it at all. The only snake that freaks me out is a poisonous one, and I have had some experience with those growing up in the desert. Now I live in a fairly snake free zone (or maybe they are just better hiders here).

The thing that makes me lift my feet off the floor is bugs. Anything with more than four legs, really. The more legs the scarier although I also reserve a special place of fear and loathing for beetles. I guess that's why snakes aren't a problem. Zero legs!

I'd take that Rat snake any day of the week. We got a copperhead yesterday, near our garage, I mean like really near....actually in it, sitting on the window ledge.....We all know where there is one there is a second. So not I got the heeby geebies and don't want to go into the garage for anything.
Which wasn't an option yesterday as we were in and out a thousand times, building the chicken coop.

I'd trade that snake for the raccoons that want to move into the garage too.
