You all are so wonderful...thank you very, very much!!!

I just got back from one body shop and the estimate is for $6800.00 That's definitely more than Blue Book. The one guy was like "I'll give you $5000.00 right now...cash. This car is awesome!" LOL!! Calm down big boy I haven't even met with the adjuster

So inside the office all the guys were giving me really good advice as well and pretty much solidified what many of you already shared. Yay YOU!

A big piece of advice one of them told me was if we're not happy with offer from insurance is to ask what the Buy Back price is. In most cases the buy back price is based on the scrap metal amount of the car. All of the guys said not to do a Salvage title because if the car were ever to get into an accident again, insurance would give us half of the blue book because technically it's already been 'totaled' Also, the title wouldn't be a clear title if we went to privately sell it.

So, it's a big ole' dating game with insurance adjusters...who knew!

I'm glad he's okay! And that things are moving along. In our accident, our car was totaled, so we had no choice but to scrap it.

It took two months to finally get our settlement. It's such a pain to deal with!

I just want to make sure that you realize the guy put a value of $11,800 on the car...good info for the adjuster.

They will pull comparables based on what that type of car 'sold' for, not what's being asked for. You can ask to see the list they use. Sometimes a flyer will be in there and pull the whole amount down. Say 5 cars sell for $6000 and one sells for $1500, that low one will bring the whole 'actual cash value' down. You can tell them to remove that.

If you don't agree with the ACV, you will have to hire your own independent appraiser to pull comparables and submit that to your insurance company. That is in most all insurance contracts. You can't be liable to yourself, and so going through your own policy, your options are essentially drawn out for you in your policy contract.

You can buy it back, again going through a similar comparables search through the salvage yard; most of them use copart. Whether it's worth it to you or not is another matter. They take the salvage value, deduct it from the ACV, and that's what you get. In many states, the vehicle would have to be repaired and recertified, or issued a salvage title, which makes resale value horrible.

I just wanted to say thank you again to everyone for all their help

I just got a call from our adjuster and they are not totaling the car...YAY!! We are only out of pocket our deductible and the body shop is sending a tow truck over today at their expense to pick it up and get it in the shop for repair.

What a huge relief!!! I'm so grateful

Thanks NIK!!

The tow truck guy was like "man, this car is clean! Are you sure you don't to sell it?" LOL!!

It's so comforting to know that MH's car is quick cash and our Crepe Myrtle out back can net us about $20,000 should we ever need it

Former insurance adjuster here -- if the body shop finds additional damage after they begin the tear down process (and this does happen) and the vehicle becomes a total after all, please be aware of potential problems if you decide to accept the total loss offer and repair the vehicle yourself -- some states require you relinquish your title and apply for a salvage title. One the vehicle is repaired, you can apply for a reconditioned title after jumping through a number of hoops. If the body shop gets parts from a salvage yard, you may be required to not only provide invoice for the the part but the VIN of the vehicle it came from. Hope this doesn't happen to you but be sure you know the laws of your state before making any decisions!
