Ws has been complaining of his lips feeling chapped, burning, tight feeling. He's never had a cold sore but does have a bump inside of his lip. I googled herpes and was surprised that its not always a oozy cold sore. He also had swelling in his glands by on his neck. I didn't think too much about til I walked in and saw him frantically looking for info on the internet. He's scared, I can tell. So anyone have any feedback on this?

It could be something even like a viral bug or allergic reaction. I have numerous allergies and my mouth will burn from certain things. Sometimes the body is weird. I'm not saying it couldn't be herpes, but it might not be. Maybe a dr trip is in order to see.

Ulcers inside the mouth are also caused by a virus, just a different one than herpes. He should see a Dr. The devil side of me thinks let him freak out for a while. Maybe even stoke that fire a bit.

I really didn't think too much about it. I get bumps in my mouth from certain fruits but he's fn scared. I can tell he's worried and THAT'S why I'm thinking it may be something. Even if its not, he thinks it may be, I can tell. When it first came up I jokingly said, maybe you have herpes. I was kind of surprised that when I googled it and hit image, pix came up and one of them looked just like his in the exact same spot. I always thought it would be on the outside and crusty like a cold sore but this one was, small and not open.

The neck gland involvement could mean something more than just an ulcer. Do not kiss him for sure.

I've had coldsores since I was a little girl thanks to some kissy relative (thanks). I get them quite bad and my glands always swell and I feel quite poorly for a few days (fluey). Also in recent years I've noticed I tend to get them inside my nose rather than on my mouth, no idea why!!

The bump and the swollen glands could be indicative of herpes.

I wouldn't kiss him.

Herpes can cause swollen glands and a flu-ish feeling.

The lump that appears is sometimes heralded by a tingling sensation.

Herpes does not always cause weepy sores, as you already noted.

It could also be oral cancer.

herpes viruses have been implicated in cancers of the mouth throat and genitals.

Also, certain strains of Human Papiloma virus or HPV can can cause mouth and throat cancers.

From the CDC site:

What is oral HPV?

The same types of HPV that infect the genital areas can infect the mouth and throat. HPV found in the mouth and throat is called “oral HPV.” Some types of oral HPV (known as “high risk types”) can cause cancers of the head and neck area. Other types of oral HPV (known as “low risk types”) can cause warts in the mouth or throat.

I think cold sores tend to be on the outside part of the lips, but when I get a cold sore, I get pain in my ear. Apparently this is a thing. I think it can cause swollen lymph nodes, too. My lips are often tight and chapped right before I get a cold sore (you want to avoid letting your lips get chapped if you're prone to cold sores). The initial stage of a cold sore is a bump (blister), not an oozing sore.

Cold sores are common, they're nothing to be ashamed of. I've had them since I was a kid. I have some little tips to help heal them more quickly, but since it's your WH, I won't bother sharing!

He went to Dr. Said it could be pre-cancerous oral. However when he took a shower I read the info on the medicine. Used for skin cancer or pre cancer spots but warning not to use in mouth or on.lips. Here's the strange part, also used for genital warts, HPV. Wtf????

Purplejacket...I hope you see this post

My ex mentioned getting something similar after our S. He panicked because he couldn't figure it out and thought it might be cancer.

Sorry, tmi ahead, but it turned out he had an hpv wart on his lip, most likely from giving oral to OW (she told him she had warts at some point). From what I remember, he said his doctor froze it off.

Your husband could have contracted herpes simplex I at any point in his life, as could you. It is a very common virus and stress often brings about the first notable outbreak.

As with any virus, your husband should wash his hands often and should limit contact with others, especially contact involving the mucous membranes. Lemon balm works well for mouth sores and Maalox can soothe the mouth or lip: both are OTC.

He should see his family doctor and discuss diet, supplements (including lysine) and vitamin c, any possible medication interactions, allergies, and blood work.
