I was just reading that FL is urging people to stay out of the water because of the flesh-eating bacteria.

In 2013 41 people contracted it from swimming at the beaches and 11 people died. In 2014 11 people contracted it leading to 3 deaths.

This is both scary and sad. What the article didn't say is how the bacteria got into the water. Was it always there and is now getting worse?

I think it's only in fresh water, not the oceans... I could be wrong. Generally I avoid the water in Florida because it has so many things that can eat you...

The article did say salt water. I thought it was odd because I would have thought the salt water would kill the bacteria. I guess not.

It did mention other states as well, so it's not just FL. They said it's mainly in the southern states because of the warmer water.

That is true, too.

Generally, it's people with compromised immune systems and open cuts/wounds in the ocean.

Honey, it's all over the place. My brother picked it up at the gym. He almost lost his leg.

Wow, Sad! That's scary

TR, the article did mention open cuts/wounds, but not compromised immune systems. Does that include people that can get sick easily? Or people who have medical conditions that mess with their immune system?

Are you sure you're not talking about Fresh Water Amebas?

Seriously, the sharks and gators and snakes are enough to keep me in nice chlorinated pools... (and even those are totally safe)

It (Vibrio) has always been here, and is in the saltwater. In fresh water we have the amoeba that swims through your nose to your brain and kills you.

I understand that cold draft beer is a good prophylaxis.

http://www.cdc.gov/features/necrotizingfasciitis/

"Most people who get necrotizing fasciitis have other health problems that may lower their body's ability to fight infection. Some of these conditions include diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, or other chronic health conditions that weaken the body's immune system.

If you're healthy, have a strong immune system, and practice good hygiene and proper wound care, your chances of getting necrotizing fasciitis are extremely low."

We just got back from a family vacation along the Lee County (SW FL) beaches- so far so good with us. But this was disturbing.

Well guess who has kidney disease and just got back from Key Largo a couple of weeks ago, before this news broke?

Yeah, we'll see if I drew the short straw again.
