I've read the first 2 books, then decided I didn't want to get too far ahead of the series.

I know what you mean. I love Eric. And Bill is such a Southern Gentleman. Heck, I even liked the gay vampire that got staked by whatshername.

Through this series, I've found a whole genre of 'paranormal romance'. Oh my god, it's like the heavens opened up for me. I recently read a book called "Succubus in the City".... basically about a group of 4 hot lady sex-devils who live Sex and the City lives...... I'm almost ashamed to say I read it in a day.

I've read all but the last one or two. We started watching the series but somehow my ability to pretend the lead female's name is something other than "Sookie" disappeared once I had to hear the actor playing Bill actually *saying* "Sookie."

Ugh, why? Why is her name SOOKIE?! It's not even a pet name, it's a pig name.

But yes, definitely Eric, out of the available guys in the series. =)

You know what it is, with that, it's a personal thing.

It has long been a "thing" with our friend Bill, my husband, and another friend of ours named Keith to say "Awww, sookiesookie" *exactly like that* in the way that you'd say "bown chicka bown BOWN" or "That's what she said."

KWIM? As a rim shot line. And in just that accent, since we all *have* that accent.

So..it is just about the least sexy thing in the world to me, when he does that. Funny, yes. Sexy, no. It was hard enough reading it, trying to put that out of my head, but it's impossible when a guy with a Southern accent is doing it out loud.

Eric >>>>>> Bill.

Trying to recall who else Sookie hooks up with...what's the tiger's name? Big enormous walking stone wall of a person? Sounded hot in human form but my god, I hate weres and Do Not Want to read or see anything sexual about them. Dogboy can run around doing his protective thing, I guess, but ugh, weres, UGH. Not hot.

Not thrilled with vampires, per se, but they're preferable. If anyone has read the last two books, do we happen across any *male* half-demons? That's the direction I'd like to see taken. And by "direction" I mean "That's who I want S--kie to nail."

I just started the series but already knew that vampire sex could damn sexy. That is from other books I read.
Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series is what keyed me in on how awesome vampire sex could be. Of course Anne Rice books hooked me a long time ago.
Laurell K. Hamilton writes the Anite Blake series along with the Merry Gentry series. Both series have very erotic sex scenes.

Through Blue Moon, I agree. After that, it became more about negotiating for sex than having sex. I suppose that's what happens when you've got one woman juggling what, twenty or so guys? I stuck around long enough for Jean-Claude and

~~ Asher ~~

to be in the same bed at the same time and that was it.

I hate Anita and her ardeur so much. Do not know what got into that woman after she finished Blue Moon. Well, Obsidian Butterfly was good but that's because Edward is the hottest guy in the whole series, and it was a one off.

Merry Gentry started out from the very beginning being about negotiating having sex rather than having sex, so I could not take it.

Sometimes I think that LKH has a secret agenda to make the men in her work as interchangeable as the females in the detective novels she referenced early on. The Anita Blake guys can be categorized by hair and eye color, and that's it. The Merry Gentry guys also get *skin color* and *two or three concentric irises of different colors*. So, obviously, those guys are way more developed as characters. LOL.

I just started reading the Anita Blake series.... wooooweee! I think the one I'm reading now is Bloody Bones.

The were-tiger... Quinn. I had a lot of trouble picturing him. Bald, huge, purple eyes? Pardon? Just does NOT sound attractive to me...

I love the 4(?)th book where they are at the Vampire Convention... the part where Eric bites Suki before Andre.... oh dear, I had to take a break after reading that

It's probably a body size thing with Quinn. Isn't he like 7' tall? Hello, nurse.

But ugh, weres.

It's weird considering how much urban fantasy I read and *watch* (hi, Buffy, Angel, etc) yet absolutely dislike the whole "bloodletting as sex" metaphor. Please to be having actual sex, thanks. Do not like the biting, understand it's what vampires do, but do not find it sexy, sorry. It's eating. Also do not find eating sexy.

But I'd call urban fantasy my *genre*. Weird.

ANOTHER FUCKING WERE.

Weres *suck*.

Oh, what about that were..lynx, was it? Inbred were village? Ugh. GROSS.

When I write my urban fantasy series you will know it's me because my main character will have an enormous prejudice against weres and will not learn a valuable lesson about racism from it, because it's not a metaphor for racism, THEY ARE DOGS AND CATS.

I can deal w/ vampire biting blah blah, but the idea of eating animals is just weird. What does that say about me? Christ.

My SO likes to pretend he's a vampire and bite me when I'm making dinner, because of how much vampire crap I've been reading lately lol.

Never heard of it, but will check it out. =)

I started on the first book of the Psy-Changelings series by Nalini Singh and it was good (a little much w/ mommy issues, but still) but it was a little romance-heavy, plot-light for me, but if you're looking for romance heavy you'd love it.

Read some descriptions of the Susan Grant stuff and huh, it sounds like she's got heroes who are basically Alex from The Last Starfighter returned to Earth. That interests me. Hmm. Will purchase.

I actuallly just read the 5th Sookie book on vacation. I think it was the Dead as a Doornail one, but the names all sound so much alike.
I really enjoy them, they are fun and easy reads.
I love Eric, but I dont feel like in the series they give him as much personality as he has in the books.

I don't like the way they've interpreted Pam, either. At least, what I saw, just wandering around in a corset. Yawn. Pam in the books dressed like a soccer mom from 1997. That's what's hilarious about picturing her as Eric's right hand man. There she is in her powder blue twinset and khaki capris with blood around her mouth beside the Viking god on this throne up in here.

After reading all the exciting stuff that happens in the later books, I read book 2 in about 2 days and have started book 3.

This series ramps up pretty quickly after you read the first book. Lots of interesting characters!

One thing I appreciate the most about the series in comparison to others in the genre is that there is an argument for *why* S--kie is a supernatural dude magnet. An actual logical reason built into the mythology of that world.

If you're going to write a lead who has a harem of more than...well, two is safe, but three is the *max*...unless the harem is full of not particularly remarkable guys, I'm going to need some reason beyond "She's the lead" to justify this excessive male interest. Preferably, a reason that doesn't come way too late and doesn't make me gag (Anita Blake, I'm looking at you).

I guess that part has either gone over my head or I haven't come to it yet. For now, all I'm getting is that she is blonde, bosom-y, and tanned--that seems to be a pretty effective magnet.

Probably haven't come to it yet.

And "blonde, big boobed, tan" would be plenty if it was a men's adventure novel. It's not. It's written for a female audience and it's first person, even. If you're going to have a POV character who is going to be the primary object of interest to a half dozen guys, like to the exclusion of other females, okay, but convince me why. I need to know why any young cute blonde wouldn't do, and the author gives a reason why it has to be this specific young cute blonde, but while she hints at it, I don't think she comes out with it for about 4 books or so.

So, answering the question "What the fuck is so fabulous about *her*, that she should be driving 1000 year old Viking vampires to distraction? Seriously, what?" is important, and I received a satisfactory answer here. That rarely happens.

That drives me nuts about Anita Blake, more than any of the other issues with the series, actually. This bothered me first. Anita is not particularly attractive, she thinks she's tougher than she is, for some reason she feels compelled to describe everything she's wearing every day to me even though every day she wears jeans or cut-offs and a polo shirt and every night she wears a black cocktail dress. She thinks she's witty but she's not. She thinks her remarks are clever but they're not. For some unknown reason instead of putting the verbal smackdown on her or ignoring her entirely, like 50 guys just tolerate her verbal abuse which is not particularly funny and wouldn't take anyone aback at all, ever. You don't have to argue to me why 2 guys would put up with you or be very attracted to you, but you do have to explain why 2 supernatural 1000 year old guys put up with you and are attracted to you, much less 50. What is so great about you? What?!

And can't wait to find out WHY Sookie is so popular...

Well, it explains for sure why she's so popular with vampires. I guess it affects the <gross> weres </gross> too.

It also explains why Jason's popular even though he's herpes on legs.

What is so great about you? What?!

Well, Anita is Laurell (don't forget the second 'l' that makes her special and different!), and Laurell is a flaming narcissist on a stick. Or a dick, or several as the case may be.

I greatly enjoyed the first five or so Anita Blake books (remember Sigmund?) but they absolutely broke at "Narcissus in Chains." This is when the loathsome doormat Micah appeared, as well as the ardeur, a flimsier and stoopiter device I have never encountered. She might as well have started enclosing a tape of "boom chicka pow pow" with each book after that. I have heard, though can't be bothered to verify, that the change in the books was concurrent with her divorce from her first husband, whom we may understand to be Richard, thinly disguised and now serving as someone to be mocked, what with his normal emotional make up and all. Feh. I'm ticked, because the disintegration of this series has robbed me of reliable bathtub reading.

I am enjoying Sookie et al (hate the series, but that's because I'm intolerant of deviation from how *I* think characters, places, etc. should be portrayed, to say nothing of storylines. Tara and Sam? Just...no). Will check out Susan Grant, because I resent being in the position of waiting for authors to crank out the next book. :)

This is when the loathsome doormat Micah appeared

But he has a big penis. This makes him stand out in a world where other males are filed according to their unlikely eye and hair colours. He's layered.

Yeah, I know Anita is the Mary Sue to end all Mary Sues. I liked through Blue Moon + Obsidian Butterfly, the latter because it's Edward-centric and I love Edward. I'd like to hire him to kill Anita. Her crimes are legion, of course, but mainly for having the nerve to dictate to Jean-Claude and Asher when, where, and how they could hook up. They have been in love for half a millennia, GET OUT OF THEIR WAY BITCH, they don't have to ask your stupid permission.

The hate, it burns.

Re: Tara and Sam. I guess it doesn't bother me because the tv character has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the book character, so I only briefly kind of go "Is Tara such a great name that they couldn't just pick another name for this entirely new character? Sara? Kara?" but the actual Tara/Sam thing didn't bug.

Then again I only made it about 4 eps into the tv series due to previously identified issues.

I just wish LKH knew something about BDSM. Never in my entire life have I heard someone blather so much about BDSM yet know so little about it. Does she live in a Vampire LARP in 1994? *I* don't know all that much about BDSM but I know more than *that*, and much of that I learned at, well...Vampire LARPs in 1994.

Of course except for Asher and Damien the rest of the guys in the books can DIAF anyway, since they've all gotten so freaking petite and girly anyway. I don't even want to read about *female* characters who are 5' tall and have ankle length red hair and wear little red running shorts and nothing else, much less males.

Damien interests me because of the obsessive thing and Asher because of the whole scarred face duality thing. The latter is a particular quirk of mine, not gonna lie. =)

I have, that's more SCA-ish, though. Have you ever been to a Vampire LARP? I had waist length hair at the time so I mainly just went so I could wear a corset and get my hair brushed. Obviously I was a Toreador. That's all the Toreadors ever did, just sit around brushing each other's hair.

Okay, I didn't read through the entire thread due to spoilers. I am about 1/3 of the way through the first book. Waaaayy better than Twilight so far.

LadyV, I agree, the name Sookie? What the hell is that?

I just finished Definitely Dead on my way home from work today. I am about to start All Together Dead.

Is the one coming out in May being released in paperback right away? I hate lugging hardcovers on my commute.

HAHA. I think Im with KSA on this one. There is something about holding an actual book, turning the pages, seeing how much more you have to go, that I would def miss with a Kindle.
I do like the idea though-very green which I am trying to be. But with my books- I dont know.

Nurse...I am a MAJAH book person here. When I grew up, my mom was a librarian. I spent whole summers/weekends in an old beautiful library. Love the smell, love the feel of books. I collect books!

However, my life with teens and work and everything else is so incredibly hectic and this little gadget has helped me to streamline. It is better for the environment--I am a quantity book purchaser, not just one every once in a while. And it is much easier than lugging books around with me. The screen looks "soft" like a real book page. I read faster and more than ever before.

You gotta get one of these...

OH...! With the Kindle you can see how far you have to go...there is kind of a progress bar on the bottom...

See no excuses...

Now when does that new book come out? I need my fix.

I finished Dead and Gone last night. I just don't feel that I can say anything because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

I liked it, but it made me sad, too--unlike the previous books.

When does the next one come out??

I really love this series. I am a bit behind most of you though....I just finished Definitely Dead. I have to say, a couple of the books (dealing with Bill and all his betrayals) really brought up some feelings I wanted to keep buried for the moment!

I do find myself giggling from time to time....Harris is pretty good at throwing in the humor here and there.

I started watching True Blood on HBO on demand last night.

After reading 7 of the books so far watching the show definitely conflicted with some of my images of the characters. I hate the way Bill says "Sookie"

Ok--I just watched the entire season one True Blood in 4 days. It was awesome.

I don't have cable, but am considering getting it so that I can watch this show! Season two starts in 2 weeks.

Or maybe I should just rent Buffy. I've never seen those and they are highly recommended by our very own ladyv...

Oh yes - all of the Buffys as well as all of the Angel series (spin off of Buffy). I can lend 'em all to you - especially as I'll be gone for two months this summer, so you can take your time with them. You'd just have to be careful with them as a couple are autographed. I am an ber Whedon nerd.

If you liked Twigliht and the SVM series, I think that you'd really like it - it's sexier than Twilight, but not as sexy as SVM.

* Daphne (Ashley Jones), a new waitress at Merlotte's and love interest to Sam
* Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp), wife of the head of the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti-vampire church that Jason joins
* Sophie-Anne Leclerq (Evan Rachel Wood), the vampiric Queen of Louisiana, even more powerful than Eric

Yay just got From Dead to Worse today!!
Cant wait to start reading it.

Also, I just read on Charlaine Harris' website that in Oct a new book of Sookie short stories will be coming out called A Touch of Dead.

ETA Cont to read on her website.. apparently she has multiple short story books. Most seem to have at least one story containing Sookie and various other characters.

I started this series a week ago- read the first three books already!!! I did not like the ending of book three tho...I want Sookie and Bill to be together, I don't like Eric putting moves on her...am I the only one who feels this way??? Do Sookie and Bill ever get back together??? I got so into these two characters that I've refused to buy book four!!!

Also, you guys have given me some new fodder to work with!!! I'm going to seek out some of these other book series that were mentioned...

Is there anyone on this thread that might consider loaning paperbacks to dusttodust? She's in Florida.

I don't have the actual books...just on Kindle.

I think the season is great so far. The episode 2 weeks ago was a little boring I thought.
I love how they are writing Eric this year, a little more like the books.

I also think that the character of Jessica is becoming entertaining.

I am growing bored with the Tara/ Marianne storyline though. I wish it wouldve come and gone as quickly as in the book.

I finally broke down and purchased the hardback copy of the latest book (cheapskate me was trying to wait for the paperback... ).

It made me so sad! I really loved Sookie's grandfather...poor Sookie. Harris also left alot open in the Bill/Eric/Sookie area too....anyone else thinking the same thing?

Oh yeah, the romance story is definitely wide open.

And I'm loving the series right now. I actually am still digging the Tara/Marianne thing. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

LOOOVE Jessica. She's hilarious. The whole cast is just great I think (I think Paquin's the weakest in this group).

I loved everything except seeing Sookeh's tittehs for the umpteenth time yet no glimpse of Eric ass or (be still my internets) peen.

Apparently cameras cannot be willed to move lower simply by my staring at the screen intently and urging them to. =)

Yes that was truly YUMMY.
I am worried however, that they are going to make the Sookie/Eric thing all dreams and not the real amnesia/spell plot line that happened in the book.

Honestly, I think they're doing the dreams now because Eric/Sookie happens so *late* in the books that they just couldn't fail to do something with it sooner. Eric had to get naked and horizontal ASAP.

Edited because vertical and horizontal are opposites. I have to run, I'm late for second grade.

I agree on that ladyv. Will make the eventual less of a shock to those that didn't read the books first.

Personally I kind of like how they are skewing the books a bit. I am still surprised by the TV series even after reading the books!

I like that the show isnt exact to the books also.
But I just love that story line and would love to see more of Eric.
Also wondering if they are going to bring in Alcide eventually.
I know ladyv you said you hated him but it brings alot of storylines in too.

I think there's something up with Andy, on the show. Why wasn't he affected by Marianne? Everyone else who wasn't affected is a supe.

Hi, I am new to this discussion. I love True Blood but haven't read the books.

I don't have a thing for blonde hair men. I like dark hair men so I'd choose Bill over Eric .

Although I don't mind seeing a naked Eric, I prefer Sookie staying faithful with Bill May be I should start reading the books!

Yes, Alicde annoys the heck out of me.

I think Andy wasn't effected because of his rabid alcoholism.

Personally, I wasn't a big fan of the actor playing Eric last season. I think it was the hair. The long hair looked a bit silly... his eyes were too close together... a little too much 1987 glam rock. The haircut, however. **whistle** Big difference.

I actually preferred the scenes where Eric was all vulnerable post Godric - even with all the blood on his face. Waaaay better than the bed scene. Perhaps because it was more subtle.

Oh yes I totally agree. Im not one for long hair either.
But the first or second episode this season when they were at the mall and he was wearing that track outfit and just got his haircut. WOWZA!!!

I liked seeing him vulnerable as well. I usually dont like the blood tears but when Eric was sitting there with his head in his hands with tears streaming down... well I'd be willing to lick them up!!!!

A friend of mine is a perfumer and a True Blood fan. She's made a gorgeous perfume called Vampire Groupie in honor of the show. (she can't call it "Fangbanger" because that word is trademarked)

It has notes of magnolia and spices. So lovely!

Keep calm and carry on.

It will come out on Kindle when the publishers think they've exhausted all the hardback buyers.

First comes the hardback, then the Kindle version at a slightly lower price, then either the paperback or reduced price Kindle.

I think they actually believe Kindle buyers will buy the hardback if they withhold the Kindle version. Silly fools.

That is exactly what I did.
Just finished it and have to say I wasn't really impressed. It jumped around too much with a sub plot that went nowhere. Of course I guess that could play out in the next book if there is one.

I enjoyed "Dead in the Family".

I think the sub-plot that went nowhere was meant to be a manifestation of Sookie's paranoia and trauma caused by the torture and abuse she endured.

No mention of what became of Arlene though.

Yep.

I've been reading the Outlander series. Love the whole idea of the time travel stories, but damn she just can't shut it and write tight, you know?

Charlaine Harris writes fluff, but it is sooo easy to read and digest. I'm enjoying.

Well, gotta say that was not one of my favorites. What I don't get is how the sexual tension of her first books is NONEXISTENT now.

Just the basic writing not so good...her sentences are abruptly short. It's weird. And I have got to find out what happens to that damn c.d. I feel like this book could have been reduced to three to four chapters to begin a much a better book...
