My hubby bought the wi-fi version of the Nook for me just a week or so ago.

I love my Nook! My DD wants a book reader. Perhaps "Santa" will bring her one for Christmas!

I got one as a gift. Not sure if it has wifi.
I just upload the books and read. I haven't really searched into it but I do LOVE it.

OK stupid questions....

Do you have to buy books you upload?

Where do you buy them?

Does the nook have to have internet and do you have to pay for the internet?

Thanks for the help

Yes, you do have to buy the books. You download them through Amazon. There are some that are free though.

I would not do the Wifi Kindle because I like to be able to download immediately and don't want to have to find a wifi spot. I love the Whispernet download.

I have wifi at home. Starbucks has free wifi now.
apparently, amazon is still in the order-taking stage for the $139 Kindle available end of august. I'm really broke right now this deck and porch building is just draining my finances -- but its my priority!
WH thinks these e-reader prices might even drop further come xmas time!

I decided to get the $189 version in the graphite with 3G and wifi.

I will be selling my old Kindle version 1 on ebay or maybe donating it to the Auction Block here.

I'm excited.

I THINK the WiFi $139 allows you to download books right away but any other web search means you need the the 3G capability. Spend the extra money it is worth it.

Most books cost 6-9 dollars but there are lots that are free or only a buck or two. With the Kindle you can also send yourself documents, email articles and other things to a free email account and download them to your Kindle.

Ok...I love the new Kindle. Heck, I loved the old one, too.

But it is such a great size/weight and the screen is so crisp.

You can clip things out of books and put them on your FB or Twitter. Haven't done this yet, but it sounds awesome.

Get the 3G (comes with Wifi). Believe me, you will be somewhere someday and want to read a book and you will be so happy you got the 3G.

I've downloaded books at high school football games, waiting for my DD to finish theatre rehearsals (and I am sitting in parking lot FOREVER), on business trips...

I'm thinking of getting one for a friend for Christmas, and I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know WIFI from 3G. Can someone explain, in layman's terms, what the difference is?

Hiya T_T,
Wifi, can connect to the internet if there is WiFi = wireless fidelity or 'hot spots'. You can find WiFi spots in some coffee shops, example -- they subscribe to internet and make it available for their customers to use that internet connection through the WiFi.
3G is like a cell phone... you can connect from almost anywhere... example - while waiting in Mexico (for 9 hours) from checkout to get to airport, WH was getting very bored and borrowed my Kindle, from the Kindle, he went to amazon and bought a book to read.. within a minute he had it downloaded and was reading.

If you live in a city with a lot of WiFi spots and don't travel much, getting the cheaper version might be your option. I like to travel, so I have the 3G version... nothing quite like buying a new book while on a beach in the middle of no where :)

Hope that helped :)

Thanks, Schmoop - that helped A LOT! One more question, though - what if my friend doesn't have WiFi? Is there a way to download books to them the "old fashioned" way - like with a regular internet connection?

If getting the WiFi version, but no hotspots around, you just download from amazon.com to the computer, and then from comp to kindle by plugging in.. just like iPod. :)

Glad I could help

Thanks again for the info, schmoop! If I get the 3G+WiFi, then she can use it anywhere?

Yes. If she has 3G+WiFi, it will be like a cell phone. She can connect to amazon right on the kindle, shop for a book, buy it, and start reading it within minutes.

You don't even need a computer--except to set up your Amazon account and payment info at the beginning.
