I've wanted to share this with you all for a while, but I wanted to get a little away from the holidays in case anyone in the family was sneaking around to see my reaction to this. That part will make more sense in a minute.

On my birthday in early December, we received a box in the mail from my MIL. Inside were foam balls, pom poms, googly eyes, and other craft supplies along with "the rules" for a family snowman making contest.

There were three families in the contest, which was supposed to have been "judged" on Jan. 2nd.

The first family smelled a set-up and made this:

Since I thought I was competing with the first family because they have some awesome artists, I went all out. I was pretty bummed to see their entry.

The second family (family of the 'Golden Child') submitted this:

And here's our entry:

No prizes were awarded, just an email sent out saying everyone was very creative and they were all well done- UNTIL- MIL made the chocolate cake demanded in the ransom note- and gave it to the Golden Child's family!!

So, there you have it, the second entry won.

ETA: The bottle caps were required to be a part of the entry, if you're curious about that.

Awesome entries.. really creative. Did they need to be holiday themed?

That sounds like fun! I may borrow it for when my kids have their own families.

I could have fun with this...

Thanks for the idea.

They didn't have to be holiday themed, they just had to be some form of snowman. I expected the first family to come up with something like a snowman chainsaw massacre or something.

It changes every year- it has been rice krispie treat sculptures, gingerbread houses, and the snowman. I wonder what it'll be this year??

Yep, but that's how it works in this family. When we were doing this, before we even submitted it, people would ask H what the prize was and he'd tell them that the winner was chosen long ago and there was no prize, only punishment. It's true.

Perhaps in "Normal Land", but not in "NPD Land".

In NPD land, it goes like this:

If we do something good, then that is putting down the Golden Child and makes her feel bad, therefore good is bad.

If we do something bad, that's bad.

If we are indifferent and do nothing, that is also bad.

So, you see, we're bad.

One might say abominable.

Yes, one certainly might.

My SIL(The Golden Child) is a photographer with I-don't-even-know-how-many thousands of dollars of cameras and lenses. I have a 'learner camera'- you can shoot in manual mode and some other modes, but you can also shoot in Auto. I was so stressed about the picture. I went to great lengths to get it 'just right'. Then, I wanted to be a little over-the-top, so I added a snowfall effect:

That was the first picture I submitted, but they said my snowman looked computer generated. Actually, the first thing they said was, "They did NOT make that!!!" So, I sent the photos I had taken of the work in progress. (You learn to be prepared for anything in a family like this. ).

Anyway, I mentioned the camera thing because my SIL took the first two pics (the ransom note and Iwo Jima). Interesting, huh?

Very interesting... I didn't know we were neighbors in Narcland or maybe I live in Narcdom.

Howdy, neighbor!

I've posted about my in-laws down in NPD. I don't post there much, but sometimes I have a situation that only the people down there truly 'get'. There's a LOT more than I'm saying here, but most of it is hidden safely away in that thread.
