User Topic: Television Show glorifying affairs?

I am not watching a television network for the foreseeable future because of a summer series they are running which seems, based on its ads, to glorify affairs. Is anyone else having a problem with these ads?? Every time I see them it makes me angry because I truly believe they are giving the WRONG message! How about a series based on the impact the affairs have on the children and bs??

I just posted something about this show. It makes me angry and so sick every time I have seen it. I watch GMA every morning and they show the crap every break.

To me it just shows how our society condones infidelity in many ways now. It is easier to cheat now than ever and apparently many people don't see the big deal. I imagine none of those same people have ever been cheated on.

Tiredofthepain, I am right with you. I have watched GMA most mornings for 30+ years and can't do it now. There are so many things about GMA I love, but I think I am done with it...

I really miss the days of family TV. Does anyone remember these? The Andy Griffith Show, My Three Sons, The Brady Bunch (yes, a little dorky, but I learned values as a child from them), etc...

Yes, old fashioned according to today's standards, but today's standards really STINK! I want TV Land to bring back all those shows that provided society with good morals training. We have lost that- BIG TIME!

I used to love Jennifer Love Hewitt. I NEVER missed Ghostwhisperer and thought she was amazing. Then came the client list. But you know, it isn't really her fault. She had no choice, to start being a hooker and sleep with her husbands brother. You just don't understand. But everyone can't help but tell me what a good show it is.

Hate t.v. I just watch netflix and hulu and am careful with that stuff.

Yes. TV has gotten so bad. All we have now is reality TV and it has nothing to do with reality most of the time. It is a breakdown in our system that shows no longer have a morality clause. I do think as kids we learned some of our morals from watching shows that always had good morals and showed people how to live their lives in functional households. Ours wasn't very functional but at least I thought they existed out there somewhere and it gave me something to strive for when I had children of my own. Unfortunately neither one of my spouses got much from morality TV in appears. The stupider the show, the better they liked it. I had to actually ban shows and not allow them on my TV because of the content. Now they are doing movies and TV shows glorifying affairs and stupid people will watch them and think that they are real life. I bet they don't show the devastation that it causes the whole family, the heartbreak of the BS and children when the WS leaves them for his/her new soul mate. They will make it sound so romantic, 2 souls falling in love, they couldn't help it, it was just fate. On body's fault, that's just the way it is when people fall in love (lust)

I have wondered about this. Are TV programs and movies changing our morals and ethics or is it that our morals and ethics are changing TV programing and movies?

The Hallmark Channel is currently working well for me, along with the Disney Cannel, Nick, and Sprout. the ads are safe.

D-day(s),after years of TT and Gaslighting was Labor Day Weekend 2012, continuing for a week after. *Dammit! More TT 3/9/13
Really trending toward D- planning about it is my "happy place" now.

I spoke too soon- there was an ad for it on the Hallmark channel tonight while I was watching a movie.

To me it just shows how our society condones infidelity in many ways now.

Personally, I believe that what you see on SI more accurately reflects societies view of infidelity. Television, on the other hand, simply reflects what sells to the general public. Try turning off the TV wasteland for a few months and see if your perception of society changes.

I really wish this were true.

My personal experience was that "I am supposed to get over it" because it was a mistake and I had the pleasure of reading comments, numerous comments from strangers and distant acquaintances that suggested "If I had been better in bed" it would not have happened at all. I was viewed as the defective one.

It took me a couple of years to really develop a thick skin and not care at all what so many people thought, and I have to say I was shocked that they blamed me for the failings of my WS and MOW's.

With that said, I am glad that your view feels safe and good. So much of how we perceive the world is based on where we are at the moment. Turning off the TV is probably a great idea all around. It's not a very good tool for shaping world views, IMO.

The premise of this show is beyond offensive. I'm going to write a letter to ABC asking them when they'll be launching a show that accurately portrays the reality of an affair and how it impacts the betrayed family. You know, a show where the betrayed spouse is curled up in a ball on the floor and needs medication to get to the point where they can actually make a sandwich again? And I love how the "mistresses" are all beautiful. In real life they're skanky, white-trash whores. pg=all

But I did find an article expressing our views, so at least we're not alone:

I agree.

These shows are awful.

And yes they do reflect society's changing morals but also add to the decline in ethics and morality.

The more people are exposed to this the more it becomes the norm in everyone's mind.

Thanks for the link cliffside. I sit here in my home and wonder "Am I the only one with a problem with this?" so it is reassuring to know that I am not alone. I will be sending a letter to ABC and will not be watching it until Scandal and this new piece of garbage is off the air. After 30+ years of watching GMA I guess it is time to let it go! I wonder how George S. would feel about promoting the show if he was the bs?

I can't watch much tv at all because it all has romance or something that triggers me! I saw the ad for the show too and was appalled! How could they glorify such an incredibly painful thing? It makes me sick.
