What?  Posted: 4:35 PM, June 5th (Wednesday)

So I remember hearing about scuba spiders a while ago - a special breed that builds a bubble and breathes out of it when submerged.

Today as I was putting DD's bath together, a cup alongside the shower was filling with water and there was a spider inside of it.

We get a TON of spiders here because we live in a heavily wooded area. Green and dark brown ones, very run of the mill.

Well, imagine my horror/intrigue as I watch this guy twist and fidget against the torrent of water, and then suddenly calm down when submerged.... this little bubble attached to what I figure is his thorax-ish region. (Hell if I know whether spiders breathe out of their face or not.... now I REALLY question it.)

I put the cup on the counter. I figured in a few moments he'd struggle to get out or curl up in the dead bug position and prepare for the spidey afterlife.

Well, 3 hours later that sucker is still in there, sucking off his bubble.

So are ALL spiders scuba spiders? Have my woods spiders adapted in case of flood? What the HECK?!?

I have to say, my impressed factor is taking precedence over my grossed out factor.

Huh.

The REAL test of his bubble comes when you dump the contents of the cup in the toilet and flush.

Ewwww! I hate spiders! Years ago I took a bath in my mom's whirlpool tub and a giant one shot out of one of the jets. I learned to walk on water and that was my last whirlpool bath.

Spiders I can live with. Sometimes I will even spare a spider's life and just kick them out of the house.

On the other hand it pisses me off that cockroaches exist. And that even if this world was nuked they would still be crawling around.

Saying I hate roaches is the understatement of my life.

I'd be inclined to put that cup in a sealed container or burst that bubble asap. Spiders horrify me.

Watch this lady and see if the fascination with spiders continues.

FYI - 5 hours later waterlogged spider was still kickin'. I'm thinking that he can survive a trip down the pipe drain, so I'm not really compromising any of my pseudo Buddhist morals. Riiiight?

Depends where the other end of the drain is.

(Hell if I know whether spiders breathe out of their face or not.... now I REALLY question it.)

Actually, spiders don't really breathe as we know it. They often have holes in their body to allows air exchange across something resembling a lung to oxygenate the internal fluid surrounding their organs, but in small species this gas exchange may simply occur across the surface of the body. Both of these processes rely on diffusion rather than pumping air in and out through expansion and contraction of the body, which is rather difficult to do if you have an exoskeleton. The reliance on diffusion also limits the maximum size of a spider (or any insect as well). I mention this last point so can stop having nightmares about giant bugs like they used to show in old horror movies.

Your mileage may vary... in accordance with the prophecy.

DAMMIT TR, why did you have to take it "there"?!?!

@aesir - What UP, man! Thanks for the info... somehow not entirely creeped out. That also explains why the bubble was, like, on his back.
