DOH!  Posted: 7:14 PM, June 10th (Monday)

My friend the realtor is going through a lot -- divorcing her husband of 10 years, no infidelity, just an unhealthy match, he has a lot of FOO issues that are disabling him mentally and spiritually and it's manifesting physically.

It was sucking her dry trying to fix him so last year she decided to pull the plug.

They have a huge fixer upper of a house that they have to get ready to sell and he is still living there.

He gets migraines if anyone so much as opens a can of paint around him, that kind of scenario.

Anyway, she has worked through a ton of FOO stuff herself the last few years, and she operates on a very unusual spiritual plane from most people.

Tuned in to psychic stuff, does rituals involving sacred drugs, that kind of thing.

Now she's convinced that she has to flush toxins out of her liver using a regimen involving apple and lemon juice, olive oil and Epsom salts.

I know, ughhhhh... apparently it makes you expel stones.

Anyway, lately she has been dragging herself around, looking all jaundiced and constantly exhausted from these flushes.

I asked her today how long she's going to keep it up and she said 12 times.

12 times..... ughhhh.

I've read up on it a bit and it doesn't sound like a healthy thing to do to oneself.

I worry.

Anyone know more?

I don't know anything... but it sure sounds unhealthy!

I hope you can talk some sense into her.

Geez; deliver me from cleanses, flushes and detoxes!

Better you should do some yoga The twists help massage your internal organs, creating a natural flush...

I'm beginning to think she has drunk too much of the Kool Aid myself...

But she is a great person, that's the thing.

I just hope she doesn't wind up in the ER.

I have never heard of "liver flushing" nor have I heard of "liver stones". Gall stones and kidney stones, yes, but not liver stones.

I do know a little about liver failure. My brother had complete liver failure due to a an undiagnosed syndrome know as iron overload (and also known as Celtic Curse because it is prevalent in decedents from England and Ireland). He required a liver transplant. He must eat a low salt and low fat diet with little sugar and plenty of water, so I cannot see how a "flush" that includes epsom salt, olive oil, and apple juice can be good for the liver. In fact, the only thing I can think of to flush the liver (or any organ in the body) is pure filtered water.

The info I have seen so far infers that the oil and salt glom together to make you poop out hard globules that look like "stones", which flushees then point to as signs of successful detoxing... but that the process can apparently do damage to your bile ducts... They are not designed to be pumped like that.

Like I said, I worry...

Yikes...I can understand why you're worried.

Would she be opened to the idea of seeing a naturopathic doctor who can guide her to do cleanses in healthy ways?

She has healers up the yin yang, but I don't think they're doing much.

She would probably take offence if I interfered with the process....

I guess we will wait to see how she does.

I do a liver cleanse, daily

First thing in the morning, I drink a glass of warm water with the juice of half a fresh lemon and a bit of honey,

Is epsom salts something that you can ingest safely? I thought that it was external use only,

Epsom salts make you poo. I have read the back of the box of them before. They can be taken internally but not very often. It's like a remedy if you're stopped up.

Um if she is Jaundiced she needs to stop immediately, and get her hiney to a Dr. ASAP.

The deal is the Liver toxins, the Pancreas, and Gall Bladder all drain down a common tube called the common bile duct. If she is flushing stones from her gall bladder, (which most of us do naturally, without pain or problems)she may have a stone blocking the whole dang duct. Thus the toxins are building up in her liver causing the jaundice, and looking and feeling poorly.

This can be usually dealt with by an endoscopic procedure where they use an endoscope to find the opening of the Common Bile duct, and use a special catheter to go up and open the duct wider, and pull the stones out.

If she waits it out, or thinks it will get better, let her know that permanant liver damage and death can occur from this approach. I have personally seen both occur.

Good Luck to your friend.

TN, she doesn't do doctors... hopefully she doesn't pay the price for that stance.

Her colour is never good, but when she's in the throes of a flush she looks sallow.

Yah well you can't make someone do something they don't want to do, we all know that too well here.

However she is making some choices that could really have a bad effect on her.

I really don't understand why people buy into this whole cleansing/flushing school of thought. Our bodies are amazing things and have the ability to clean out toxins, and flush the bad stuff out without us having to do anything differently. The risks involved with doing them are not so good either.

I hope she figures that out before she does some real harm to herself.

As a nutrition consultant I lead group detoxes but I never would do the olive oil thing. You are not really passing fb stones but congealed balls of fat from drinking straight olive oil. Your body requires specific nutrients to detox with and if these are not included in your detox plan all you are doing is stirring up toxins without completely breaking them down. I was just on foxnews being interviewed about the dangers of detox and this and the master cleanse are my 2 least preferred versions of detoxing.

Makes my skin crawl just thinking about downing a cup of olive oil with an Epsom salt chaser...
