I ran a 5K this morning. I did this race last year in the middle of some epic ex-shat asshattery and so I found a lot of those memories coming back. I felt myself falling back into the person I used to be and almost left the race and went home!

I didn't. Sat down and stretched and had a nice conversation with a lady there watching her son run. During the race, I saw the lady I met at the beach this past week...she and her son were handing out I made sure to say hi to her...because that's how normal people interact!
Then after the race, forced myself to hang out for awhile and here is the neat moment. The last walkers were coming in and the DJ changed songs and started playing a very mushy love song. This older guy and lady were walking toward the finish line (50's). He stops her. Makes her face him...the crowd is gathering around. He gets down on one knee and pulls a ring out and asks her to marry him. He's crying, she's crying. She says yes. He picks her up and carries her across the finish line.

It was the sweetest thing. If that had happened last year, I would not have been able to take it. But this year, it just made me happy and gave me hope.

It's my life now, my choices, my mistakes to make and my victories to celebrate. His choices made me free of liars and betrayers in my life. That is priceless.

I just got the chills. That's amazing.

There's one old standard that I've always loved (even though it didn't apply to me... maybe it will some day?), and this proposal made me think of it:

"The Second Time Around"

Love is lovelier the second time around
Just as wonderful with both feet on the ground
It's that second time you hear your love song sung
Makes you think perhaps that love, like youth, is wasted on the young

Love's more comfortable the second time you fall
Like a friendly home the second time you call
Who can say what brought us to this miracle we've found?
There are those who'll bet love comes but once and yet
I'm oh so glad we met the second time around

Who can say what brought us to this miracle we've found
There are those who'll bet love comes but once and yet
I'm oh so glad we met the second time around

May we all have a second time around.

Aww, I'm glad you stuck with it and also stuck around for that moment that didn't make you feel bad this time.

Also glad you did what "normal" people do!

Oh man - I can so relate to that.

In the early days I used to move tables when intact families sat near me. I hated that their happiness made me sneer.

Now I try to sit close to them. I bask in their happiness and share mine with them. I do get still get misty eyed when I see what I never had - teamwork, affection, a man simply enjoying his family. There are people out there who enjoy their family as much as I do.

These moments make me hopeful too.

I may have reached a point where I'd piss on him if he was on fire.... eventually!!

Has me tearing up right now.
