Ok, so I have high anxiety. I'm on meds for it. I know that drinking coffee increases my anxiety, but there is nothing I like better than having a cup or two in the morning while reading what everyone is up to here on SI.

So I'm making it public that starting now I am not going to drink the stuff and get my anxiety levels down.

Doing yoga is my next step.

Any bad habits you want to break?

I broke the coffee habit just a few weeks ago...

I used to drink one cup every morning at my desk at school... but since summer vacation started I don't have anyone to make coffee for me and I'm too lazy to make it myself and too poor to buy it everyday....

Hence... no more coffee.

The headaches weren't so much fun at first, but now I've gotten thru it.

Good luck with quitting coffee.

If it's only one cup a day, why not have half decaf half regular in the morning? I don't mean to discourage you from your goal, I'm just saying it may not be that harmful and if you enjoy it that might be a good compromise.

I'd also like to start going to yoga consistently.

You read my mind. I did go with decafe this morning and took a couple of Tylenol to help with the caffeine withdraw.

Yoga starts today. I will go unless my DD wants to walk instead. She comes first right nowt.

Good luck with quitting smoking. I only smoked for a few years in my teens and it was the hardest habit I ever had to break. I know it was for my own good, but boy was it hard.

Oh yes, I love coffee so much, but if I drink too much it ratchets up my anxiety! I ditto the decaf suggestion!


We're both in our 30s. One awesome 4-year-old daughter.

Kind of the opposite - there are GOOD habits I need to do more regularly. Like exercise. But I snooze the alarm instead, and when I get home in the evening, it's all I can do to make something for dinner, and then I have no energy to work out, so I tell myself I'll do it in the morning. Rinse, repeat.

So maybe I do have a bad habit - procrastinating.

hey nowiknow, When I was younger I taught fitness classes for 20 years. After kids/work it got to be too much and now I take a much cavalier type attitude.

If I can't go out for an hour walk/class/bike, instead I break it up to 15 min 2 or 3 times a day. That way I'm getting something at least. Someday's I work out hard others none. Do you live or work in an area where you can just get out for a little bit?

I think of exercise as medicine though. I'ts that anxiety thing again. It really helps with that and keeps me motivated.

I've been using the walking path at work fairly regularly - it's 1 mile long - but that's not enough for me to keep up with my hypothyroidism and my *ahem* declining metabolism. I have the tools and even the time exercise more. It's the energy and the motivation that are lacking.

Having a hiking buddy always helps. Maybe we can haul our computers around a scype while we walk!

..did your doc recommend you cut out the coffee habit?

..is '1' coffee in the morning really a bad habit??

..there are a host of things i consume on a regular basis that fuel my body..give me energy and stimulate activity.

Coffee is one of them! It is the air that i breathe in the morning.. without it i would surely die! It is what gives me a reason to get my behind out of bed, (and feed the cats )

..just knowing that i will be sipping that hot, delicious mug of freshly brewed rich Columbian gold is, for me, one of life's most joyous occasions, not ever to be tampered with or altered..

..this ritual of near religious significance should be recognized for the overwhelming boost it gives to the mental outlook of the participant..

..one tends to feel that all is right in the world after that first cup of Joe, there is nothing one can't accomplish, we're running on 'full bars'..

..simply one of life's most pleasureable pleasures, coffee in the morning is almost as good as morning sex!!

..and equally not something one should hastily deny themselves of the opportunity to enjoy.. (I hope my wife will be reading this)

..now, while i applaud your decision, i feel your pain..

..i'll be thinking of you tomorrow morning and i'll have an extra cup, the one you didn't drink, in your honour!! ..for your dedication, for your sacrifice ..and for your.........???? well you know what i mean!?!?

One coffee in the morning (and not even a strong coffee) can send my BP to 175/80! A strong Starbucks can send me to the hospital. (And my usual BP is mid-normal!) So yes, one is so bad for some people.

I started biting my nails again! What am I, 5?


I have some friends who have given up coffee for various reasons (I don't drink it on the regular...) and I've heard from several sources that iced green tea in the morning is quite refreshing. Some caffeine but not nearly as much. That may help you slowly let go of coffee.

somanyyears: You sound like a coffee commercial! Hire this guy for "folgers". But, yea, my doc is sorta a naturalist and doesn't recommend caffeine for my anxiety. Enjoy that extra cup for me tomorrow.

Jrazz: At least you have nails to bite. I cut mine down to the quick. Green tea is a healthy alternative, but unfortunately I'm not a tea person.

soveryweary: Pepsi the new generation. I don't drink it but WH swears by coke zero.

Letitout, sending good vibes as you start your no coffee adventure.
Years ago I did the South Beach Diet with a friend from work. We were both so miserable we started drinking it again.
I have high anxiety as well, I do bootcamp and bike to help. The Pepsi binging has been fairly recent, I haven't been able to eat so i just drink coffee and Pepys.
I think yoga is an excellent idea all around. I know there are different styles. Will you post later which you try and how it's working??

Comes with its own problems.
De-mineralizing you bones for one.

I cut coffee 8 months ago went back on in January for a week or so and haven't touched it since.
I also cut alcohol 11 months ago...omg it's been almost a year since I've had an alcoholic beverage...sorry that just really hit me.

Hmmm...I started and stopped smoking again 7 months ago when SO found the pack in my bag and gave it away to a homeless guy. He was not happy with me. I think that's it... Oh I drink about 6-8 cups of water a day and I take dance lessons, they take me out of the moment for an hour.

Holy cow - there's so much healthy mojo here...you all are amazing! So much inspiration!

BUT...I'm not that inspired. I look at it this way: I don't drink, I don't smoke - my coffee is really the only thing holding me together. I have 2-3 cups a day and don't touch pop at all. (well, okay, maybe once every so often)

I'm with lieshurt and somanyyears - never giving up my coffee! I figure that since I don't smoke, or drink soda or alcohol, coffee is my one real "vice".

My computer was down yesterday so I didn't get to see your posts. Thanks for all of you routing for me! I went a day with a horrible headache and now I feel bla. I know it's probably the coffee blues but I am really going to give this a try. My kids tell me I just have to calm down. ME CALM? REALLY?! I think it's going to take a lot more than quitting coffee for that. I'm just hoping to get off or cut down on some of my anxiety meds.

Sounds fairly typical for weaning off of caffeine. Exercise is supposed to help, but when I was feeling blah, it was the last thing I wanted to do.

I told IC that I was hopeless lets fix my nicotine habit

She told me to keep smoking.

I quit a 6 pack a day pop habit a couple years ago. Now if I don't get my water I get cranky - tell people that one and watch their faces.

Truly - I think when you are quitting caffeine one really important thing is to drink twice as much water. If you think a caffeine withdrawl headache is bad trying tying it in with the hangover feeling of being dehydrated.

Let, maybe wait a bit before trying to go off the anti anxiety meds. Give yourself time to adjust to no coffee.
I started weaning off one med for another over a month ago. I was out of my mind with the withdrawal symptoms. Good luck and hopefully tomorrow you'll feel better.

When i was in my 20's I got the brilliant idea to quit smoking, lose weight and stop drinking coffee...All. At. The. Same. Time...

My body crashed...

My doctors first question was "are you trying to kill yourself?, one thing at a time".

Needless to say I have not accomplished any of the above...

Coffee...it's my lifeline in the morning. But yes one cup will do...not an entire pot.
