User Topic: Well he's not getting a second date...

Last night I finished all my homework early, so I went downtown to see a movie (yay!). On the way, I observed a man and woman chatting on the metro. It looked like they were on a first date; judging from their conversation, you could tell they had very recently met.

Nobody in DC is from DC (well, almost nobody), so one of the first questions you ask everyone is where they're from. He had obviously asked her that, because he was grilling her about her hometown in Kansas.

Some of his gems included such charming lines as,

"Wow, that sounds like a town. Not even a big town, just a town."

"Why would anyone ever want to move there?"

"Isn't that where Bellvue is?" (Bellvue is a law school in Nebraska....)

And my all time favorite:
"So your parents are probably farmers, right?"

She was just kind of looking at him like , probably trying to figure out how to get out of dinner.

Poor girl.

Nothing gets my Southern panties in a bunch more than when someone ASSumes that I live on a farm just because I have a Southern accent!

I mean....REALLY??!!!

I remember going to Las Vegas with my mom when I was 21 and some girls stopped to talk to me and asked where I was from...and I said Virginia...and one of them said, "Can't you tell by the way she talks!?" UGH!

I think my accent is cute .....and endearing....DAMN IT!

My favorite is when people ask me if I do "cow tipping" for fun and have pigs and horses and cows on my farm...... um no. I live in a duplex with my daughter. I don't even have a cat right now.

(((random Kansas girl on metro)))

Um, yeah. Try being from Iowa.
"Is that where they grow potatoes?" Nope. That's Idaho.
"Oh! I love the Buckeyes!" Nope. That's Ohio.
"Did you raise pigs on your farm?" Nope, never stepped foot on a farm until I was in my 40s.

Try this one... I grew up in Indiana. When I say that, I almost always get asked where in Indiana.

I explain that it's a little town in NW Indiana no one has ever heard of. It was annexed years ago and so even though it is not really in the city, it is technically a part of... Gary.

I often then have to sit through a rousing chorus of "Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana...". Fortunately, that's usually the only words from the song that people know.

Less frequently, I get wide-eyed looks and comments like "Gary? Really?" (Those come from anyone who knows what a high crime rate Gary has.)

I live in Canada. At one point I worked for a company that had it's head office in the U.S. We normally had to call in reports every monday. (this was before email). After a long weekend the girl from H.O. called TICKED that we didn't phone the day before, and that we didn't even answer the phone!! I explained to her it was a long weekend. She said no it wasn't. I said it was in Canada. She decided I was lying, because Canada wasn't a different country, just a state, and we DID NOT have different holidays.

The best are those that think because I live in Canada, it MUST be snow, all the time, and I take my dog sled to work. was over 80 every day here last week!!

Well since I do live in Kansas I run into these weenies all the time. The think that Jesse James still terrorizes the town and cows roam freely through the streets and everyone lives on a farm. Seriously, how are people so goofy?

Try being from New Jersey. Everyone thinks we speak and act like those idiots on "Jersey Shore" - and only one of them was even from NJ. We also don't say "Joisey" - that's the imports from Staten Island and New Yawk that sound like that. We're not all connected (though I was told about an "Uncle Joey" through my Uncle Sal) to the mob, either. (RIP James Gandolfini). Sheesh.

Im from tiny little Delaware. We were the first state to ratify the US Constitution and we are the home of tax-free shopping. We were traveling and someone asked us if Delaware was in Pennsylvania. My 15-year old son said straight faced yes, yes it is. When we walked away I heard him say under his breath "Dumb ass."
