And by Strays i mean guys that drive by and just need a little extra cash....Ugg...

Dh and I are working on this one barn to get it ready for the horses, and every time i turn around there is SOMETHING that needs mended, fixed, worked on, picked up, ect ect.

After my uncle handed the reins over to my cousin the farm as went to hell in a shit covered handbasket and my uncle is not happy, but he's 79 and just can't do anything about it anymore.

So far, in just the 3 days that we have been working we have already done more for it then the last few years. I am PISSED. I knew my cousin was slacking the shit out of the upkeep, but yesterday just put a new fire under me.

We get out there and one of the grown strays came out and said 'here, feed the calves"....he's lucky i like feeding the calves, or his ass would have been chewed out.

I am really glad I did though, one of the week old calves had MAGGOTS all over her anus and vulva, and along a wound between her hooks and pins...OMG i freaked. We are not talking a few, we are talking layers of maggots....i almost puked.

I told my cousin and he gave me industrial fly spray to spray on it so that they would die WTF?? I told him straight out that's fucked up and proceed to wash, clean, and dry the poor thing off, get her hutch back to better, and then put utter balm on her....

Pissed doesnt even begin to tell you how i am.....

There were 3 grown strays out there standing there watching me...not doing a damn thing - They are so going to hate me now that we will be out there daily with the horses.

On a up note - Uncle was out with us and he came alive again i swear. He helped me with the calf, helped DH with the broken gate, he even let me drag him around to show him what we are doing to the barn....he was so having fun with the kids too.

I told him I wish i had been older and took over the farm instead of cousin. I wasn't even out of high school when the transitioned happened, i wasn't old enough....but I wish I had been.

That must be infuriating! It's awful when people let buildings go into disrepair, but animals? it's heartless. These men (the strays) are really disconnected from themselves. Do you think some kind of addiction is making them so dull and numb?

Good for you for stepping up for whatever time and energy you have to contribute.

It's a precious thing to have a family farm. I know it is a ton of work, but so rare these days and capable of giving much rewards.

I have 5 acres and a house and outbuildings and I live alone. It's a lot for me to keep up no doubt. This month I am lucky to have the help of a neighbor in fixing my porch. We are replacing and area 8x32 feet and I have learned how to tear out old joists and install new ones. It's also rewarding to live in a beautiful rural place.

Good luck with your family farm.

That is beyond irresponsible. It is ABUSE and if I were there with you the f*ing strays would be weeping and begging me to stop when I was done with them. Spray some fly spray on it? Are you f'ing kidding me? How about we cover him in sores and maggots and tie him up and ask him if he wants some fly spray?

Punch him in the face for me will ya? I am so done with humans like that

Are these "strays" employed by the farm? Am I understanding that correctly?

I would fire them. It doesn't sound like they are earning their keep.

That would make me super angry, and tempt me to place the maggots on his face.

Poor baby girl. Although the maggots probably helped to keep the wound bed clean. I know it's gross, but I have taken care of nasty wounds, and the ones that have maggots in them tend to actually heal better and faster. Yes humans get maggots in their wounds too.

It's great that you were able to give the old guy some joy, and happiness too. Hopefully you will be able to do that for him more often.

I wish i could!

During the summer break, the only strays are the high school country boys that actually work, and work hard. The farm gets about 4000 bales up every summer and they help with the cows and stuff. Once school starts back up, then we go back to the grown strays that just futz around.

There was no reason for those maggots, nonewhatsoever. If they would have taken a closer look by 2 seconds (all it took me when i was feeding her) they would have seen it.

I remember when I was growing up that the farm, while old, was sturdy and worked.

This farm, every year it gets worse.

Mark my words, shit will change - whether Cousin likes it or not.

not really, its cash, under the table stuff.

If their had only been a few on a healing wound, ok.

But there is no sane reason for them to be in her vulva and layered at her anus and under tale.

This was not something that happened recently, they had to grow, days....could you imagine having all that crawling on your most sensitive parts for days??
