my own fault really ... I looked ... didn't even read I think there were/are words ... I know there is beady eyes and up close hairy scary thing ...

BTW I screamed and called you lot's of dirty names ... and then I LOL while I picked my mouse up from the love seat where I threw it out of reflex ...

The freaking bird killing spider just rolled by on my FB page ... I'm still quite shook up from that ...

Just last week we found a 4 inch Cane Spider (google it) in the toilet paper dispenser in the men's room. Wish I'd take a picture of it before we rallied the troops (it took 3 of us to kill it).

Makes sense to me, as I understand that Hawaii is not a carry state.

Makes sense to me, as I understand that Hawaii is not a carry state.

Sadly, we were armed only with a weak vacuum (couldn't suck it up), a dust rag and a slippah (flip flop for you mainlanders).

Used the rag to chase it out of the dispenser, then it took 2 good shots with the slippah to kill it dead.

Edited to add: And yeah, it was about that big! ^^

No problem. Spiders, like reptiles are very misunderstood.

Honestly I never like spiders. Then as my time with wh went on and he insisted on buying Goliath Bird Eaters for his dad I came to see them as interesting. I still had my limits.

Now however I have a pair of tailless whip scorpions (still an arachnid) and I love them. Huge! Scary but so cool. My wh likes spiders but is terrified of the whips! It's the one features on Harry Potter. I can't wait to breed them. :).

I've never had a whip scorpion. They're pretty cool looking. I really like scorpions, but I'm not very good at keeping them alive

This is the last one I had.

Hopefully this works. This is my little guy. Had to remove half his bark to get to him.

The large one was at the front but before I could snap a picture had already run behind his bark. Holy crap he's fast! Don't look forward to putting him in a bigger tank hahaha

I understand your fear! I do. Honestly I was terrified of spiders.

Then I met wh and he gradually showed me how interesting they are.

I still don't like them that much (i' prefer to deal with large monitors over spiders/tarantulas) but I am no longer fearful of them. It's taken me years. I mean years! But I think that learning about them helped me put my fear into context. Why was I afraid? Other than say a black widow (which dont live here) they don't pose any threat. And best of all they eat flies and Mosquitos! Two bugs I despise! (there may be venomous spiders in Canada I really don't know...). The ones I see all the time aren't so they don't bother me.

Again getting to this point took me years and exposure to them a lot. I'm not saying you or anyone else afraid of them should do this. Just saying that I understand

Thanks DragnHeart but I really would prefer to pass on the 'getting to know' them part!

My dad once told me they hunted in packs so now... if I ever see one... I am terrified as I have to wait for an army of the critters to storm the room in their hobnailed boots

I STILL don't know if he was pulling my leg or not but to me- that's a 'truth' I will never be able to alter!!

Not sure about spiders (pretty sure they are solitary hunters) but coyotes terrify me because they DO hunt in packs and we have heard them just out back. So close I could feel their eyes on me....

I have a pair of tailles whip scorpions. One is huge. One small. The large one will need to be moved to a larger tank soon. I dread this!!! As much as I love these animals the move will be a challenge. He's fast!!! I mean fast!!!

I fear he could get away from me and since wh is scared of it he wont help

My dad once told me they hunted in packs so now...

Oh Boy!!
Spiders DO NOT hunt in packs, but that cracked me up!!

With very few exceptions they aren't aggressive either. Defensive, yes. As far as I know only the Brazilian wandering spider will actually come after you... (not sure about others) (protecting an egg sac doesn't count)

Brown recluse may be aggressive too.

Hell, I don't want to see this guy EVER!!!

Saw something like this while weeding tonight

It was a garden spider not a wolf spider, but DD13 ran around with DS3 on her back playing spider and her baby.

Not the greatest photo but here is a garden spider my neighbour showed wh. He caught it. This spider created a zig zag web.

In this photo you can just see it at the top. So cool!!! We have it in a critter keeper. Hoping it turns over so we can take better pictures.

The last picture on page 4 looks like a baboon's butt.

And sorry spider lovers. This morning as I was getting DD4's shoe out of the kids' shoe container, a large spider charged at DD. I think he wanted to eat her. So after shrieking and doing a little tap dance, I smashed that thing with one of DD8's big, jaloppy shoes. I won't tell her otherwise she'll be mad at me.

Our dd (5) loves spiders. Watches spider movies, has spider toys yet the other day when I showed her a daddy long legs outside she promptly took off her shoe and smashed it to nothing. When I asked her why she said:

"I don't want it to come in the house".

DragnHeart,

The spider in your picture is a "writing spider." So called because of the zig zag they weave into their web. They are also called "St. Andrews Spider," because often the zig zags are in the shape of a cross.

It is believed that the spider in the book "Charlotte's Web" was based on a writing spider.

We have tons of these where I live and they can get pretty big. They are harmless to humans though and very beneficial because they can eat some pretty big bugs.

Thank you!!! Learned something new today. He is a beautiful spider. The colors are amazing.

We are still waiting for the spider outside to lay her eggs before catching her for pictures. She's albino. Something I have never seen before. We have these types of spiders ALL over but this one stands out. I plan on sending the photos to a friend of mine who is a specialist in insects. I am hoping he can tell me more.

Here is a fun fact for you:

Wolf Spiders have eye shine. Go out at night with a flashlight and see your grass light up with the reflected eyes of yes, spiders. I am not going to try this experiment personally. I am going to live in blissful ignorance of the thousands of eyes shining in the ground.

SO if you don't like spiders...Why do you keep looking???

Is it like that thing that I'm secretly terrified of werewolves, but I look at pics of them anyway....

(yes I do realize that I'm opening myself up to some kind of werewolf pic attack)

You know, pictures don't really get me. If I IMAGINE the picture in real life situations that I actually have to live (like that toilet roll spider...) then I get all heebie jeebie. But just looking at pictures doesn't bother me.

But keep the blasted things out of my house.

I think I will get wall mounted spider blasters for every room.

Eyes in the dark. Here you go :)

This is actually two cats that were staring at us while we were out with the dog. My phone camera blurred the two eyes together so it looks like one set when it's actually two.

Very creepy!

I haven't seen spider eyes though. Will have to look tonight.

I wasn't quick enough with my phone to get a picture and I'm really kicking myself.

A black wasp or hornet (I'll call it a wasp since I don't know which it was?) was in a battle with a huge spider and really it was impossible to see who had the upper hand.

The wasp flew by me landing on the wall. The spiders legs wrapped around it. As I went to take a photo it flew off.

Goblin sharks. Because nightmares didn't suck enough when they were filled with spiders.

This thread should come to mind whenever someone is offered the comfort of "there, there. There are plenty of fish in the sea..." Online dating proves that those fish look pretty representative of the "pond." Let's just say not everyone can be a clown fish.

Goblin sharks, of course. Those and kraken. Someone is going to tell me that R'lyeh isn't down there somewhere waiting to sploosh up to the surface with all it's non-euclidean bullshit, I bet. I will say "Yeah? Look at that. It's a Goblin Shark. THE ELDER GODS MADE THAT FUCKING THING TO GUARD THEIR SUBTERRANEAN NESTS." So, IA IA and all that.

OH DEAR GOD MY MOM WOULD HAVE SO DONE THAT TO ME!!!! Sorry...memories of the terrifying tricks my mom would play on me. Funny that the clown pic is the first one I found truly terrifying....did I mention I watched the conjuring this weekend and have slept with the lights on hugging my dog ever since?

..did I mention I watched the conjuring this weekend and have slept with the lights on hugging my dog ever since?

This totally reminded me of starting to read Cujo while chicho was away. I think I made it 9 pages in and decided that it was not the best idea.... This was months ago, I still haven't read it.

Mind you I love scary movies, I do enjoy the occasional Stephen King book, The Shining is my fav so far. I just couldn't do it. I knew I'd be running up the stairs as if the devil was on my tail, after dark. At least I know my limits

I got up to go to the bathroom last night.
Was to lazy to turn on the lights.
Sitting there in the dark I suddenly invisioned a scary spirit/ghost/monster was going to magically appear In the tub. Finished my business and hobbled as quickly as I could back to bed.

Has anyone seen paranormal activity? The scene where the monster grabs her foot and drags her out of bed?

Ya my wh LOVES to do this to me every damn Sunday morning when he gets home from night shift. I now set my alarm so I am awake when he gets home

TR you're mean.

Broevil that chart is 100% accurate.

Drgn yes I have seen it and it is one of many reasons the covers are wrapped firmly around me feet included...but there have been times even as an adult where I was scared to look under the bed because I just had his feeling the clown from IT would be there.

Oh and it wasn't so dark that I couldn't see last night (full moon) I also brought a flashlight with me to the bathroom

LF and I were out walking the other night and as I stopped to take pics from the bridge, we noted it was crawling with spiders. LF is still scared that some followed us home!

Each bridge section has at least two or more webs designed to capture the flies etc that will be habitating along the river and moving in the wind across the bridge. Pretty ingenious. And of course, it needs a close up!

I went through this whole thread and the only picture that scared the crap out of me was the damn clown.

Oh, on page 3, the spider on the toilet, I have that exact shower curtain. Now I have to gently peek around it to see if I'm safe from spiders.

I'm taking a tarantula to DS's school tomorrow, for their spider unit.

They're doing a blessing of the animals. They're going to bless our spider!!!

I hope the teacher warns Father ****!

I'm bringing in a little one, so as not to traumatize the kids, too badly.

Are you going to let them pet or feel the spider?

NO WAY!
It's about the size of a half dollar...easily smooshable.

Also some tarantulas have hair that is super irritating. It's a defense, when threatened they rub their butts really fast and it releases all these hairs that hurt like hell if they get in the eyes.

I've never seen this one do it, but I'm not taking the chance. Also the teacher asked me several times if it was contained
