When you see a young girl on the street and think, "If you have to spend half your day obviously and self-consciously picking your skirt out of your butt cheeks, that should be a sign that just maybe you know it's too short????"

If you talk about where you were when Armstrong set foot on the moon. . . . Oh wait I wasn't born then. I must be channeling NIK.

1. I would rather talk to a human then to a recorded voice or text.

2. I tell kids I remember a time when there were no computers or cell phones.

3. I am the first one to leave the bar....at 10pm....because its already past my bed time (to my defense 4:45am comes early dang it)

4. I scare the dogs whilst getting out of bed because usually both my hips, knees and back pops....joy!

Little story....She-Ra was like THE thing growing up (as well as He Man, Thundercats, and Gem...but I digress)....

There was a MAYBE 20 year old girl moving stacked chairs and another lady my age (30) came up to her and commented:

30yr: Look at you go She-Ra Princess of Power.
20ish: Stares blankly...who's that?

I died alittle inside...and then I quietly said "For the Honor of Grey Skull...I AM SHE RA!"....enter theme music.

But still...i feel so old.

You can no longer bend over to pick something up off the ground without making a noise.

You hear your favorite song ... but it's in an elevator

An "all-nighter" means you don't have to get up to pee.

You get breathless going DOWN stairs ...

1. You made it through high school and college without having to own a personal computer or an email account.

2. You didn't always have a cell phone, and you and the people in your life didn't always have to have instant access to each other. And somehow we all survived!

3. You see a really good-looking, college-aged girl wearing next to nothing, and your first thought is that she reminds you a bit of your oldest daughter, and your second thought is that you'd never let her go out dressed like that.

4. You feel like you just had your 40th birthday party, and realize that you're almost halfway between that and a potential 50th birthday party.

5. You have vivid memories of things that happened when Carter was president.

6. The 90s seem very recent.

7. You can't name a single song on this week's Top 40 charts. Hell, you're not even sure they still have Top 40 charts.

8. The gray hair is advancing rapidly.

9. You can pull a muscle doing just about anything. Or nothing.

10. You stop being able to help your kids with homework sometime around 7th grade, because you forgot that shit a long time ago.

11. You remember a time when wait staff at restaurants didn't refer to middle-aged couples as "you guys."

An "all-nighter" means you don't have to get up to pee.

Was at the pub last night with a young friend from my history class (she is *22*, whip-smart and adorable).

Her eyes got bigger and bigger when I told her abut my two years in a log cabin with no toilet, water, phone, TV, wi-fi or power.

I did have a transistor radio that picked up a signal from Spokane at night if the wind was right... Heard Linda Ronstadt singing Blue Bayou on it for the first time and remember being blown away by that song.

We had to truck water down from the creek in giant jugs on a toboggan and cook on a huge old wood stove from 1890-something.

We had a sauna and a cellar full of apple cider from the orchard that we juiced with a hand-cranked cider press.

We had a lot of parties and played music all the time. With instruments.

Best two years of my life.

She said "You were a hippie, weren't you?"

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go catch up on some Frasier reruns....

When you think of the sock hop dances they had in the eighties, and then you realize we are as far from the eighties now as the eighties were from the sock hop era.

And also when you're talking to your kids about going to see the new smurfs movie and you mention you haven't seen the first one much to their shock and dismay. So you say the only smurfs you're familiar with is the ones from the cartoon you watched when you were a kid. DD asks, "In black and white?"

A new vacuum at 40 is equal to a pony at 10.

I'm with unfound on that one!

...not to mention how excited you get over a new roof at 40+ ...kind of equivalent to your first car?

What consistently makes me feel like I may be getting "old" (beyond the mirror & you know, pain) is I'm blown away by computer memory. I feel like Dr. Evil waking up to mind-boggling changes.

Two weeks ago I picked up a new external hard drive for $59.99. A 1 TB HD.!!!

I still remember upgrading the RAM in our first computer. I got 1 MB for $100.

@ Deeply Scared. I also have a couple of colorful words come out of my mouth when I do that.

Here's a few more I thought of...

You know what it means to dial a number and roll down a window, and neither of those activities involves a button of any type.

You also know what the term "rewind" really means when it comes to AV technology.

Speaking of AV technology, you were once a badass because you were an AV monitor, and helped with overhead projectors and film projectors (no computers of any kind involved).

You know what AV is without having to google it.

You remember the distinct smell of your school assignments that were handed to you with purple mimeographed ink on them, from the "ditto machine".

You've used a microfiche machine, and know how to properly pronounce "microfiche".

Nice try, Losfer, but I used to run the 16mm projector in third grade (1963) and could even splice the film when it broke.

Hell, no. We had film splicing kits with special tape.

I am truly humbled. I am going to retreat and go play in the sandbox with all of my other fellow whippersnappers now!

LOL - Next we'll learn about:

"Duck and Cover" drills(which I remember doing, along with neighborhood air raid sirens)

Or as we called it - "kissing your ass goodbye"

1960's air raid siren:

Where's Sad in Az? She'll remember 'duck and cover'

Going to practice my "duck and cover" before TR hurls his projector kit at me.

For the record, the program failed. I misplaced a semi-colon, if I remember correctly.

You downloaded music by calling the radio station and requesting as song, and then waited impatiently for them to play it so you could hit "record" on your cassette player.

Realizing the Camaro was born the same year as you were.

Knowing all the words to Bitchin Camaro, and you kids think you made up the song.

I remember sitting next to my father watching TV. A program would end and he would ask me to go to the TV and turn the channel knob (which actually had numbers on it) to whatever channel he wanted me to change it to. The TV was at least a 3 foot by 3 foot square box and it the TV was a black and white TV. What color???? You have to be kidding me. We only got channels 2,4,5 7,11,13 and on a very good day 17. Even so, if there was a storm of any kind coming you could forget about channel 2 all together and 4 was a crap shoot. If you wanted to know what was on TV you got a TV guide in the mail. There was no channel that you could turn to and scroll to see what came on when. I remember that TV lasted forever and just wouldn't and wouldn't die. My father NEVER did get cable of any kind even when that huge monster of a TV finally did die. I honestly think we were the last house in my entire state that still had black and white non cable TV.

For all of this,.... myself, my sibling, and our neighbors spent countless hours playing outside. Oh the days!!! If I could turn back time I honestly would!

The other day while I was cleaning out the basement, I pulled out a box of pictures from college. My kids were in awe with the "little strips of brown see-through stuff" (aka film) and baffled at how pictures could come from them.

aesir and NIK, I remember those. And TR, your air raid siren looks like a tornado siren.
And as far as computers, you know you're getting old if you remember the Vic20 and Commodore64 wnd the max RAM was 64K.
Another sign you're getting old is you know what a slide rule is - maybe not remember how to *use* one but you know what it is.

Oh, yeah! Having memories of "helping" my dad fix the tv when the picture started going on the fritz....

By opening the back of it, taking out the tubes, going down to the drugstore, testing those tubes on the machine they had there to figure out which one was bad, buying a replacement for the bad one, then going back home and putting all the tubes back in the tv.

Holding the antenna to the TV so you could watch a program because no matter how you adjusted it the picture was fine until you let go.

Knowing every word and musical note to "I Met a Boy Called Frank Mills", the most obscure song from "Hair".

I am depressing myself!

Edited to add: Garden Party, when I went to university, we didn't have hand-held hair dryers or curlers. We did however, groom our hair by sleeping on huge brush rollers or ironing with a flatiron. Jeesh, I am ancient.

And this Batman and Robin:

I remember 8-tracks and that Batman and Robin. I also remember Atari.

Here's one for the more "mature" members - actual penny candy. A pop that cost 2 bits out of the machine. Pop in glass bottles that you could return for a nickle (or 10 cents). Pull tabs on either beer or pop cans.

For the smokers, a pack of name brands that cost 45 cents.

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them right now.

ETA: you may be getting old if you know the meaning of the term "L7" - as in "He/she/they are so L7".

Watching The Hardy Boys (not re-runs) on TV.

Being infatuated with Shaun Cassidy and being jealous of my sister for having a poster of him in her room. And of course, singing along to his famous Do-Run-Run song.

Buying a 12-inch B&W TV for my bedroom and my friend being jealous of it as we watched, sitting on my waterbed.

Roller-skating at the 'Rink every Saturday night. BTW, I recently found a roller skating rink in nearby town and I found that I still have the moves! What fun it's been!!

any former-roller-skaters will get this...knowing the words to Rappers Delight

Being impressed when the first fast-food chain came to town and had a DRIVE-THRU window.

Renting, not owning, our telephone from Ma-Bell.

Watching slideshows with my family from the slide projector.

My first cell-phone, was a big ol' flip-phone, and as my sister put it, the size of a man's shoe.

Knowing the difference between leaded and unleaded gas-pumps.

Learning to type on a manual typewriter at home but in school on the oh-so-cool electric version!

yikes, my list could go on and on...

but just for the record, I don't think of myself as old!

TRD, you just reminded me of something else. The "ding-ding" as you pulled up to the pump, waaaay back in the day when an attendant pumped the gas for you.

Slight t/j: I watched Emergency! on Netflix a while back and had to pause an episode because I couldn't quite believe the price of gas it showed - 54 cents/gallon for self-serve, 64 cents/gallon for full service. I was thinking "Damn, people would KILL for those prices these days..."

At my first real grown up job, the man I worked for smoked a pipe - at his desk - and I had to clean up that mess every night. I also fetched him coffee whenever he needed a refill - and took dictation, on a notepad.

You know your old when: You still own the orginal Woodstock album after a dozen moves across many states, but you no longer have anything to play it on.

When you got your very first 'real' job after college, you told them that you wanted to take home $100/week because that was a really good salary.

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

When you remember wearing poodle skirts, bobbie sox and saddle shoes.

When you remember seeing The Beatles first performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

When you remember watching The Lawrence Welk Show, The Dinah Shore Show, The Honeymooners, The Milton Burl Show, Scrappy, Sing Along with Mitch and I Love Lucy, and they weren't reruns.

When you know what a jibber is.

When you remember buying penny candy (single pieces of candy for a penny).

If you've ever chewed Black Jack, Cloves or Teaberry gum.

When candy bars, popsicles and a bottle of soda were a nickle.

When gasoline was a quarter a gallon.

OMG! Now I feel older than dirt!

Shaun Cassidy OMG

I also have started roller skating again- love it!

I remember the difference between leaded and unleaded, my first car could take leaded. And the gas prices then were awesome!

Lawn darts were great!

And I remember $100 a week sounding like a lot of money.

You know you are old when the doctor you are visiting is appearing to be much younger than you....like the age of your kids.

My DD13 asked me - Mom, did you have TV when you were a kid?

(sigh - actually a loud HUFF) Yes, DD.

Was it color?

(irked now!) Yes, DD. We even had (Commodore 64) computers and indoor plumbing! We had MTV and everything!

LOL!

You're quite lucky, wannabenormal. When they were 5 and 6, my kids wanted to know if there had been TV while I was alive.

Do you remember having an Atari and playing pac-man on it at home..I still have one that my son had...

I also still have a nine-inch color tv that has a turn dial on it and it still works..I have a VCR that has metal gears in it...And the remote is connected with a cord to the back to control it..

I remember when we didn't have gears on our bicycles and didn't have to wear helmets and knee pads to ride it either...

I remember when there wasn't seatbelts in cars..And you could get to the oil filter and be able to change your own oil...

When I mentioned I had downloaded an "album" from ITunes and my niece asked what an "album" was....
she only knows it as music or CDs

flash-bulbs on cameras

being "high-tech" when given a Kodak-disc camera

AM-only radios in cars

Oh my goodness, a Viewmaster! Haven't seen one of those in a while!

I had a Kodak Brownie (with big flash attachment). Thought I was the cat's meow!

Edited to add: The site says it was discontinued in 1961 so that must have been the year I got it. I was 13. OMG!

When you watch a group of teens trying to use a rotary phone as a "push button" phone.

FYI, they actually still make ViewMasters! I sent my 2yr old nephew a ViewMaster and some Superman slides (via Amazon) for his birthday a few weeks ago.
