Are there ever any G2G in the south, other than in Fla?

I live in Tennessee.

Another question that is a bit more on the serious side...

Does anyone have issues with becoming un-anonymous? Worries about persons with agendas?

Is this question totally paranoid??

G2gs do happen in the south other than Florida. In oct 2012 there was one in Chattanooga and then dec 2012 one in Orlando. In April 2013 there was one in Atlanta. There has been talk of trying to get one around lake Harriet which is near Atlanta.

Your questions are good questions. It is a big step to show to a g2g for these kinds of questions. I have yet to run into someone with an agenda and I am one of the more prolific attendees to g2gs.

In order to keep people safer, specific locations and times are not posted on the public forum but get passed out to those attending through PMs. You should also just keep your guard up to protect yourself. There is no need to divulge things at a g2g so you can decide what you want to share.

These get togethers aren't group therapy sessions but more of just meeting the person behind the user name.

WhatsRight - Very good question about anonymity. One thing I wanted to add to Moo's great answer is that each member can control whether their pictures get taken and/or posted here on SI along with the other g2g pictures. Some people are comfortable with that, while others are not. And if you are not, you need only say so to the other folks at the g2g. Those wishes are respected.

WhatsRight...

It does take a leap of courage to put yourself out there and meet people you've only "known" thru usernames and the relative safety of the internet. But if you do, you'll never regret it.

Since I've joined I have had a member come to visit me and stay at my house for the weekend.

and attended to organized g2g.

I enjoyed both... meeting new people and making new friends.

I never felt uncomfortable and the conversations usually stray away from SI and those topics and people talk about themselves and their lives a bit more. SI, or more the reason behind SI, seems to be more in the background... in my experience.

ETA: Oh, and the only "agenda" I ever had was to get Moo into a Pedi chair!!!

I lost a ton more of my anonymity when I started adding SIers on FB than by going to g2gs I get friend requests sometimes from people who recognized me from the site. That can be a little weird.

It can be a slippery slope, and if you have specific privacy concerns, the one that comes to mind for me would be if you are in the midst of ongoing, contentious litigation that may have been discussed here on the site, but I'm sure there are lots of other scenarios, it doesn't hurt to stay anonymous.

Heck, you could use a nickname at the g2gs and no one would know any different beyond the waitress who cards you.

If the Atlanta G2g comes together I would love to go. I was worried about not being anonymous, but I'm getting over that.

Pretty sure there is going to be some sort of G2G in Columbia SC (or thereabouts) in November. Jpapa is coming for the SC-Florida football game. (Although, I hope to God they pull something out of their asses and find a way to play better than they did yesterday. Sheesh!!!)

I think we are going to try to get together for dinner at a BBQ buffet somewhere on Friday night. I'm willing to be the point person on this and make arrangements if anyone else decides they can make it.

Hi WhatsRight!

I organized the one in TN last October and ended up not being able to attend.

I've met an SIer independent of a gtg setting. It went fine, but I was nervous.

I attended the Atlanta gtg this past April and it was SO much fun. Good times were had by all, and there were some really nice people there.

At first I was super concerned with privacy/anonymity/etc. It's very normal to be nervous, and totally okay to be paranoid- it's self-protection. I didn't allow pics to be taken of me and posted on the boards. The gtg attendees respected my wishes. It was very lighthearted, relaxed and overall everyone just had a good time. I felt that no one there had an agenda, except for Moo. His agenda included a LOT of making fun of my Southern accent! A LOT. Beware- he WILL give you grief if you speak Southern like me.

Moo- It was Lake Lanier, but I think that has been dropped in favor of something more along the lines of what happened in April.

TripleTrouble- you should bump the post. We need to get organizing if we're going to make this happen. I'll try to catch up with gahurts to see if he's still interested in planning it.

If anyone is interested in organizing a Southern gtg for this Fall, PM me. I'm sure I'd be game!

ETA: btw. I asked this very same question last Fall. This is how I got nominated to organize one in TN last October. If you'd like to attend one, organize it. I can answer any questions you might have. Also, the guides and mods are awesome about answering questions too.

I wasn't teasing. I was trying to speak in your dialect so you could understand me.

And jrc is right. She did have an agenda. Curse her.

Fellow Tennessean here. Been to two "official" SI G2Gs (one Chattanooga, one St. Louis) and one or two "unofficial" hang-out-for-a-few-hours, kind of thing with some folks that have become truly dear friends.

Any interest on the South and I may be in. Schedule is tight and crazy but I''ll see what I can swing.
