This morning, I was sitting at the table when I heard a strange noise in the kitchen. I knew my dog was in there, so I went to take a look and see what he was getting into.

When I got there, I saw my dog spinning around in circles and his feet kept coming out from under him. I thought he was having some sort of seizure and was dying.

Waywardson said I jumped backward, though I don't recall that. He asked me, "What's wrong, TIKY?? Did another snake get in the house?". So, I was trying to process what I was seeing and trying to figure out WHY he would be asking me THAT question.

I think I finally muttered, "Something's wrong with the dog.", but not before Waywardson was standing beside me, witnessing the same scene.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Happy and I knew what had happened. Happy is a cat. A VERY mean cat. He has cancer. I think we need to up his pain meds because he's become more aggressive, but he's always been mean. A couple of years ago, he mauled my dog during a storm. We lost power and when the power was restored, we saw our dog covered in blood in the kitchen. I was looking around for a broken window or something, but there was nothing. Then I saw Happy and knew what he had done. He tried to kill him. I could tell that he had tried the 'killing bite' on his neck.

In the old house, we kept the dog in the kitchen because that's where I spent most of my time and Happy had already tried to poke his eyes out. That house had butler doors on the kitchen, so it was easy to keep the cat away from the dog. He slipped in unnoticed that day, though. When we moved, we moved into a house with a very open floorplan, so we can't separate them now.

Our dog is at LEAST ten years old, blind, deaf, and toothless. Oh, and he's ten pounds. He is totally defenseless and this cat terrorizes him.

{Waywardson asked about a snake because he heard the cat hiss and spit.}

I've been carting the dog along with me as I moved around the house today. I just pick him up in his bed like a little taco and take him wherever I'm going. He's fine. He was just attacked out of the blue and had no idea what was going on. It was heartbreaking to see.

This is my dog sleeping in his "apartment" (basically a double playpen) last night:

Please be very careful with cat bites - they are very dangerous. Last Nov. my 16 yr. old cat got very sick - vet told me she was in shut down mode and needed to euthanize her right then. My cat was always a mean cat - only wanted affection when she wanted it and only for a few minutes at a time.

While having her put to sleep I was holding and cuddling her - she went wild and bit my hand twice - very hard. The bite turned very infectious - 14 weeks of iv antibiotics at the hospital - another 6 weeks of oral. The finger she bit is permanently damaged - cannot bend even after 6 weeks of physio. I -couldn't work for 10 months - and to this day am riddled by different infections in my body related to the infection of this bite.

Cat bites are highly infectious - I learned this the hard way - never could I have imagined the damage humans and other animals could go through.

We love our animals unconditionally - but when they are sick we have to be extra vigilant of ourselves and other animals in the house.

Poor dog. There is no way I'd have that cat around to terrorize that defenseless dog.

lieshurt,

I understand what you're saying and, believe me, I've been at my wits end with this cat for a while. Our options are very limited, though. He's sick, but it just isn't time, yet. It's close, but not time, yet.

Happy was on his last day at the shelter when we got him. He was on the news, the Tuesday Tailwagger. He and Waywardson have a really strong bond and Waywardson is having a tough time with letting him go.

I'll keep my dog right with me, especially now that I have been reminded of how mean Happy can be. I even took him to the bathroom with me tonight when I went for a soak.

The dog wasn't injured this time. He's fine. He just got really upset when Happy smacked him.

Well, it looks like Happy has taken a turn. Beating on the dog was probably part of that. He's been under the bed all day. So, we're really close now.
