Count me and SO in again this year.

I never did empty the glitter bowl from last year... It's been sitting in my cupboard all year. I thought about emptying it not too long ago. SO and I agreed that there is no reason to do it now since we will have plenty more glitter sooner than later!

JRC, download the Hobby Lobby app. They have a 40% off coupon you can use if the glitter is not on sale. The coupon renews like every 2 weeks or something.

Craft store coupon for GLITTER for the SI Christmas Exchange. Whyyyy do we need another thread? Besides, my tip wasn't top secret. Everyone gets the benefit so they can all buy bulk glitter for much cheaper.

BTW Amazon may still have that big 10 pound keg of glitter for $10-15. Which is a killer deal. If you buy it, use the Amazon link to the left.

Bam. Plug for SI too. Should I take out another thread for advertising?

FP - many of the participants in previous years have sprinkled a little glitter into their cards before sealing them. And a select few take the glitter nuclear, putting in so much that it trails behind the postal carrier as they deliver the envelopes.

Participants are encouraged to be mindful of potential glitter bombings when opening their SI cards.

FP...

It's up to you how you want your envelopes labeled. Just specify in your PM to Card Exchange. Some members use their real name, some only use their first names and some only use their SI name...it's entirely up to you.

But we do need your mailing address in order to label your cards and get them mailed to you.

Here's the cards I received the 1st year I participated (2009). It was the year I was going through my divorce, and it was such a wonderful thing to receive so much love and support in the mail, especially at Christmastime.

Last year I also had the privilege of being an elf, and helping DS and MH sort the gazillions of cards. It's really cool to know that I was helping get all that glitter to where it needed to go.

But I'm moving overseas and won't have my address until about the time the cards get sent out.

Full name and mailing address? Or just mailing address?
Just one other note about the name and address - the other participants in the card exchange will address their cards to you by screen name only. The name and address you put in your PM for the card exchange only get used by DS & MH to print the final mailing labels.

I''m going to expose my general christmas card ignorance here...but what''s the norm? Warm greetings? Family photo? Glitter, obviously....

Well... I send Hanukkah cards, because I'm Jewish and I get Christmas cards and Hanukkah cards back... and I'm happy with any and all.

Some people write a personal message.

Some people sign their real names and SI names or just SI names.

I do a combo... I sign my real name w/ SI name on cards for people I know well and just my SI name on others.

Some cards I've gotten are "religious" most have not been. Most have cute or funny greetings.

Some very crafty people even make their own cards... my hats are off to them, I could never do it.

Some people put glitter. Some confetti, some nothing (me).

It's really a kinda friendly free for all...

ETA: Apparently I wear more than one hat! but it's funny so I ain't gonna fix it.

I almost posted about this a few weeks ago! Because I. AM. READY.

Life has been very difficult these last few months, and I am so ready for some Xmas cheer! Last years glitter (from the cards I received) have been in a ziplock bag and pinned to my bulletin board all year. That mojo is some good stuff!

So, count me in! Will pm address, etc.

I put all the glitter from last year in a jar and put it on our accessory shelf in our closet. Every time we walk in there, we see the sparkles of love and friendship from fellow SIers.

For any newbies....

See the size of that "glitter" up there? Do not be fooled. CERTAIN people <ahem>broevil/chicho/and a few others I can't remember at the moment<cough> apparently DELIGHT in sending the teeniest, FINEST, STICKIEST (OMG) glitter you will ever see! It settles on your skin and gives you a nice green/red/blue/purple sheen. It covers your furniture. It sparkles in your nightmares!

Take heed of the warnings to open your envelopes OVER YOUR SINK, or SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!

I put all my cards up last year on the wall over my couch, in the shape of a heart, and, yep, I still have glitter on the wall. Cannot get it off! But, it makes me happy.

I've been a lurker the last six months or so...too much has been going in my life to coherently talk about. I'm just trying to get through each day. Last year was my first "official" year without XWH (previous few years he was here in body, but not in spirit). I thought it would be devastating. It was not! It was great, actually....just me and my boys. And all the SI love.

If you are a newbie and not sure about this...DO IT. You will not be sorry, and it will give you smiles that last the entire year!

Edited for typos...

The only thing you need to know to get it "right" is to open your cards outdoors. Or over a bowl. And even then, your efforts will be useless, because your home WILL be glitterized. And probably half of your face, too.

PUPPY!!!!!

Winner!

Chico, I love otters, but it's obvious that the Christmas creature is NOT an otter.

We opened our cards over a Tupperware tub over a towel. It still got everywhere. I switched from laughing to crying as we opened them and I would wipe tears from my face (hello Stupid!?) and would inadvertently replace them with glitter. Yeah, it was a mess.

I let Teslet explode those glitter bombs all over the living room. We had so much fun sweeping up the glitter for the next...uh...well...7 or 8 months!

I told him we were getting more this year. His face was pure joy

I've wanted to do this for a long time, but I'd have a hard time explaining to my husband where all the cards came from because I keep this site as my "private" safe place.

So I'll sit back, as I do every year, and look at the wonderful pictures that people post.

Have fun everyone

A few years ago, someone, I forget who... wasn't thinking and crawled into bed to open her or his cards. I remember hearing there was still glitter in the sheets six months of washing later.

I remembered that I bought several packages of glittery cards on clearance after last Christmas.

And I even found them in my closet.

If it's anything like last year, I'll need to buy more cards. But at least I've got a good headstart.

I just told my kids that the cards were from my friends

This would work with my two boys. The girl, however....let me give you an idea of how that convo would go:

DD: Who are all these cards from?
Me: My friends.
DD: What friends?
Me:Friends I met online.
DD: Online? Where online? Can I go to the website? What's the website about? I want to read it! Can I read it? (All said with one breath)
Me:No it's something private for just me.
DD: Why? I want to see! And why do these people have weird names? Why is that person sad and mad? What do they mean Deeply Scared? Was she in some kind of accident? How many tattoos does TCD have? Can I get a tattoo?

She's 11 and exhausting.

But I do love spreading Christmas cheer so I'll think about it.

Tred already signed us up

We had so much fun writing and opening the cards! We laughed with tears in our eyes, not realizing how much the glitter can impact the messages sent!

Our son asked about the cards because we keep them seperate from others, and we told him they were from friends we have in an online community. He was a 14 year old boy so no further questions were asked, lol. This year our 23 yr old daughter will be home and I am sure she will ask more questions as I know she will read them and wonder about the names. But whatever, it is TOTALLY worth it!!!

We had so much fun that we put glitter in our regular cards!! Tred's boss loved that!

Now, to find that good sticky glitter...

...damn auto correct

I believe there were 63 people/couples to sign up last year. The list has been growing for the last couple of years, though.

What we usually do for our international friends, is when we post the list of people participating, send us a check/money order or cash in the amount of postage you'll need, along with your cards and we'll purchase your stamps for you and put them on your cards while labeling them.

I found Martha Stewart glitter for a dollar a tube last January at Big Lots. Bought a bunch. Last couple of years I only put in a few of the large glitter shapes like champagne bottles, wine glasses and mistletoe leaves and berries, but I think I'm going to the dark side this year! Caveat emptor!

Eveyone is welcomed to participate. For our international friends, once the list is posted of members participating, just calculate how much postage you'll need, include it with your package and I'll purchase the stamps and put them on your cards for you

Thank you

Will you post them in a packet? And is there a website where I can work out the postage, please?

It's 46 cents for a standard size card going anywhere within the US (square-shaped cards or oversized cards cost 20 cents more).

$1.10 for all cards going from the US to international destinations (yes, even Canada and Mexico - which used to be at a cheaper rate )

xe.com can give currency exchange rates, but you should probably round that up a bit as that is the bank rate and not what "real life" people get.

I'm not sure how people have dealt with the different currencies in the past - DS can probably let you know. Cash? Check? Postal order?

usps.com is the US postal service website, but it can be confusing if you just want to know the letter rate - it is really set up for calculating packages. https://www.usps.com/send/address-letter-cards.htm

ETA: Maximum weight is 3.5 oz. SOME people probably need extra postage due to glitter weight (ahem).

Will you post them in a packet?

Each card gets a stamp and is mailed individually, not as a packet, which is wonderful, actually...sometimes you just receive one card, and then a second, and then on the third day you have 32 cards crammed in your mailbox with glitter spilling out through the cracks! The anticipation makes it all the more fun.

Aw, I love the idea of this, but with how many people are now doing it, I don't know that I can afford the postage back to the UK from so many people.

If I am remembering correctly the senders are responsible for the postage not the recipient.

Chicho is correct. The senders will need to put the correct postage on the cards. DS will mark on the list the ones that need international postage.

Softcentre,

It will be 46 cents per card for you (plus whatever it costs for you to bundle them in a packet and mail your cards to Texas). DS and the elves will be mailing the cards from the US to (mainly) other US destinations. In past years, there have only been a few overseas participants. There is no obligation to send to everyone if it is too expensive. Most people do if they can, though, because everyone can use the extra cheer and glitter.

For those of us sending cards TO you, it will be $1.10. I will definitely send you a card if you sign up! I have lived overseas before and there is nothing like knowing someone in another part of the world is thinking of you.

Not an ad, just a suggestion. Stamps.com gives a ton of free postage if you sign up. There are promo codes all over the internees. I have not used them and have no idea about contracts or things like that. Just hear the ads on podcasts.

This may sound silly lol but I haven't sent out christmas cards in yrs. Do we write personal messages in each for everyone on the list!? And what is the glitter epidemic do you write in glitter or do decorations or just throw a handful in each envelope!? Inquiring minds want to know!!! Oh and also I'm in either way

Unagie,

We wrote personal notes to people we knew - glitter was the last thing but we weren't naughty elves with the glitter. We did sign every card. I don't think it matters and you should just do whatever makes you comfortable. I think you'll be fine and enjoy it

Me too, Cant! I was privileged to join in by doing ONE card last year and had a lot of fun with that one.

There was a member who did not receive their cards and SI asked if anyone could send one. I was out of the country and was disappointed that I couldn't fully join, so I jumped on it.

I was with DS's family and DDIL was only too happy to take part and help with the glitter when I told her it was a bit of a prank on a friend. She gave me free access to her whole supply and directed me to the store where I got lots more.

Well, I was out of the country and had forgotten that it would have to go through customs to be delivered. I had put "card only" on the envelope and took it to the PO to send. The worker felt of it and said that there was *obviously* more than *just* a card in the envelope, so didn't I want a customs form?

I explained that it also contained glitter. She said to either also add that info on the envelope or make out a customs form.

Since there was a very long line and I would have to take the form to a desk to write out and return to the end of that long line, I opted to just add those words to the envelope. She still kind of looked at me like .

But I wish I had done the form. How funny would that be to put "glitter" on the customs form as the contents of that envelope?? What would the recipient's carrier think when delivering that one??

And I bet when I visit again, there will still be a few glints of glitter in the carpet of my room! (And maybe there still is in the recipient's house too! I really stuffed it!!)

Was at B & N earlier today...

Saw nice Hanukkah cards 20 to a box for $15.95 (before my discount)

So with 68 participants so far, I guess I need 4 boxes... plus postage (not including the extra postage for international) comes to $94.47

And that's not including glitter!

Overachiever.

No way in hell I was going to HAND MAKE 60-some-odd cards.
Word. Although I was looking at the craft store the other day and they had like basic cards that you can just embellish. You hit that sucker on a sale day and you'll save a mini fortune on cards. Course then you're screwed on time, glue, scrapbook paper, glitter, stamps, etc.

Honestly, jrc - I'm not sure. They had a pretty big variety of cards. I was looking for general Seasons Greetings/Happy Holidays type cards, and found LOTS of options right away, so I didn't look through everything.

I'm in too.

It's my first time.
So, the postage has to match the country it's going to right?
I'm in Canada.
I think the lion's share will be going to the continental USA so I have a few others that I send there as well.

I just don't know what I'm getting into with the "glitter".
A little wary there.

Also, will we be given a list of participants?

The postage will be in Canadian stamps so they can be mailed in the US?

I'm probably making this harder than it really is.
I have some lovely cards that I get free from various charities and I would like to send them out to some of the most helpful people I have ever had the good fortune to "meet".

Lola2kids...

For our international friends, once the list is posted of members participating, just calculate how much postage you'll need, include it with your package and I'll purchase the stamps and put them on your cards for you

I sometimes feel like I do that all by myself, so this will just be *another* trip to the PO to send out my package of cards.

ahh. ok. Thanks DS.
Personal cheque for postage made out to SI?

My 2 biggest fears...
not getting a response to posts on SI and...
not receiving any cards in the card exchange.

Bring on the glitter!!!

Is postage more for us in the US to send to international SIers? I will bring extra postage with me since I'm an elf , but how will people ensure their card get to everyone?

Knight...

When DS posts the list of who is participating, she will post how much postage you need of each card for the international folks.

You just put the right number of stamps on each envelope.

I can't remember from last year, but would those who celebrate Hanukkah let us know so that we can send Hanukkah cards to them if we'd like? I know jrc, but anyone else?

Another question from a newbie in the card exchange:

Approximately how much time do we have to work on the cards before sending the package to SI?

Thanks in advance!

Lemony,

The signups will close this Friday Nov. 8. DS typically has the list posted by the end of the signup weekend. So you will have from about Nov 11 until whenever you need to ship your package of all cards to Texas so that is arrives by Dec 5.

I buy all my cards at the after Christmas sales. I keep them tucked away and then get to pull them out for this! I can't wait to start working on them! DSS loves to put he glitter in them.

But I wish I had done the form. How funny would that be to put "glitter" on the customs form as the contents of that envelope?? What would the recipient's carrier think when delivering that one??

Thank you for that information. I've just signed up to send cards to servicemen and women for the holidays-I was thinking of adding glitter. I'll need to fill out a form.

Kajem, that might depend on *how much* glitter you put in the card. The postal worker I handed my card to knew immediately that it was more than just a card in that envelope that barely sealed because it was bulging so! And the fact that it kinda crunched when she palpated it with her fingers to try to figure out what might be in there before saying that it was obviously not "card only" as I had written on it.

T/j: That's such a nice thing for you to do! I've sent cards, letters and packages to our military for many years. Much needed, much appreciated and very rewarding for the sender too.

I hope it's not inappropriate here in F&G for me to say that this was one thing that helped me get through the days following DDay. I joined a group adoption of 28 Marines and had just sent a whole bunch of pkgs of things, including lots of home baked goods a week or so earlier. For several days following DDay, my email inbox was full of heartfelt messages of appreciation from my adoptees! I sat and cried, reading and rereading them. Totally wonderful feeling to get that email love! End t/j and I apologize if I'm out of line.
