Is this possible? I seem to end up with IBS symptoms whenever I eat something with cinnamon in it...

Snickerdoodles for instance...

You can easily test. Swallow one tablespoon of pure cinnamon and tell us how it works out for ya

Hey Ser... you've been a lot more active these days... and your suggestions are very *ahem* helpful... NOT!!!

TIKY - No, I don't recall that happening with your cinnamon rolls... it seems to happen with snickerdoodles for the most part... but I don't eat a whole lot of other cinnamon-y type things.

Yes you can develop an allergy to cinnamon. It is not unheard of, but is not a common allergy.
I would try to eat something with just a sprinkle of it, like a waffle or toast, to see if that gets you. If not then probably something else in the doodles.

Or you could get allergy tested because it may not be the cinnamon if you've had it other things and it didn't affect you.

Good Luck.

Many things with cinnamon in them also contain wheat or gluten. Is there a chance you're sensitive to either one and the addition of cinnamon makes it flare more?

I know wheat and gluten don't cause me problems. I usually eat a sandwich at lunch made on whole wheat bread and I don't suffer like I do after eating the cookie.

No... actually it was multiple sources, including homemade. Weird, huh?

And it's always snickerdoodles... never any other cookie.

Maybe the AMOUNT of an ingredient is causing it. My guess would be the amount of butter (or oil) used. I know excessive oils cause IBS symptoms for me.

(((tummy))) I hope you feel better soon!

Mama... As long as I don't eat Snickerdoodles my tummy is fine.

Also, it's a short lived episode. The last one was a couple of hours... that's the longest it's ever been.

A lot of refined carbs will set my IBS off sometimes. Cinnamon does not bother me, but everyone's IBS is different.

I have noticed that stuff that causes heartburn in me can set my IBS off. Oatmeal is a known trigger for me. Could it be stress? Even the stress of knowing that you had a flare up last time you ate it could cause you to flare up. The bowels are the most sensitive organ when it comes to stress.

When I am super stressed drinking water can cause me to not feel well and in the bathroom most of the day. IBS plan sucks.

Just a suggestion-- if gluten and cinnamon haven't triggered you in other circumstances, then there is one ingredient that Snickerdoodles typically use that isn't commonly used in baked goods: cream of tartar. You could try baking something different with that ingredient and then eating a small amount. I wouldn't recommend eating it straight from the jar...

Yes you can develop an allergy to cinnamon

It's not necessarily an allergy, but more likely because cinnamon is actually pretty hard on the gut.

For one thing, it's very high in fiber; that's why it's so good at lowering both serum lipids and blood glucose.

It's also spicy--which probably goes without saying, given that it's a spice and all. Depending on its "strength" (I know that's a weird word choice, but I get REALLY spicy cinnamon from Penzey's), it can trigger GERD, etc., as well.

Many people with IBS and other bowel issues have difficulty with cinnamon.

Cream of Tartar kills me. I didn't even think about that. But it is an excellent point.

Cream of Tartar kills me.
Wow. Really?? I had NO IDEA that it did that to some people! Thanks tush and solus for this! I'm off to dig deeper into that.

ETA: I'm back!! That didn't take long! Have a look at this, jrc: http://www.livestrong.com/article/269198-side-effects-of-consuming-cream-of-tartar/
That would explain why my cinn rolls didn't impact you because it isn't an ingredient. I need to pass this on to my dad, who THOUGHT he had a problem with cinnamon for a while, but it went away. Thanks, again, everybody! What a cool place this is! I started out trying to help someone else and learned something very helpful in the process!!

I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with Lupus. I didn't know too much about Lupus so it scared me and that fear prompted me to start doing a ton of research. I stumbled upon a holistic health network online and found that a number of conditions, ranging from Lupus and Fibromyalgia to digestional problems such as IBS, collitus, and Chron's, can often times be attributed to undetected parasitic infections. Western doctors have such little to no training in terms of detecting/diagnosing/treating parasites because they're not quite as prevalent in our society of clean hands and health standards. So the result is these sort of "miscellaneous" conditions such as Lupus and Fibromyalgia - basically, the patient is suffering from a wide variety of symptoms but there's no clear diagnosis, so we'll call it Lupus.

If you're suffering from IBS, it certainly wouldn't hurt to do a parasitic cleanse. Through my research, I've discovered that a tablespoon of food grade diatomaceous earth in 8oz. of water on an empty stomach each day is the perfect way of killing any unwanted guests in your system. Do that for a good month and a half and then you can drop down to a maintenance dose of a Teaspoon every day after that. Although, a parasitic infection may not be what you're experiencing, it certainly wouldn't hurt you to do it anyway - the added bonus? The food grade diatomaceous earth is great for your hair, nails, and skin. It also rids the body of heavy metals and other toxins that contribute to the development of allergies. I've read that many people who suffer from severe food and even seasonal allergies no longer suffer any symptoms from those allergies after introducing food grade diatomaceous earth into their daily regimine. The silica present in food grade diatomaceous earth also helps reduce inflammation in joints, so it's great for people who suffer from arthritis or other conditions/injuries to joints/tendons/ligaments/bones. A good brand you can order right online (for SUPER cheap) is by EarthWorksHealth. Go to their website and check it out - just add the www. and .com.

Thought I - Yah I used to love my moms dill dip, and every time I ate i would have such horrendous gas, I mean clear the house type gas, that I finally stopped eating it. I made a dill dip with a different recipe, and it didn't have it, and voila, no tooting. My sister then shared she had the same issue with it. So I threw it out. That is seriously about the only thing I am sensitive to.

Anewday - I think you have your info a bit confused. Fibromyalgia, and IBS are both diagnosed by symptoms and ruling everything else out. On the other hand Lupus, Crohn's, UC, RA and any other autoimmune disease is cause by your body basically becoming allergic to itself. An antibody is created that attacks ones own tissues. These are not caused by a parasite, or cured by a cleanse. So feel free to take your earth, but don't think it can stop you from developing an autoimmune disease. Believe me if it could cure my Psoriatic like Arthritis I would be on it, but it won't.
