Question  Posted: 3:04 PM, January 16th (Thursday)

A couple of posts on the Thread Killa' thread got me thinking about how some of the goofiness here in F&G may seem really odd to folks and keep them from joining in all the reindeer games, so I thought I'd start this as a place where folks could ask, "What the heck is that all about?".

One question that comes up frequently is about the Thread Killa' thread itself. What is that? What's the purpose of it?

A thread killer is someone who posts on a thread and kills any further discussion. The thread eventually ages off the first page of the forum, falls further and further back in the page count, and eventually disappears into the virtual ether.

The goal of the Thread Killa' thread is to be the last one to post on it. That's really all there is to it. So people chat about random stuff, crack jokes, and try to get the last word. All of the thread killa' threads so far have filled up (a thread is limited to 1000 posts) before being killed, and then they get locked.

Clear as mud?

So... what makes you scratch your head in F&G? Is there anything that makes you wonder, "What the heck?" or say "I just don't get it."

Well, I didn't know what the bus thread in NB was about until the Houston g2g, but that's something different .

I feel like we are all gathering around the camp fire for NIK's story hour. (*Please don't tell us to get off your lawn*)

Ooh - an! That's an excellent point. For anyone who doesn't already know, you are considered "on the bus" in the New Beginnings forum when you have been celibate for 6 months.

Frankly, I think they've figured out that it's US that seem really odd.

or say "I just don't get it."
I am not sure I want to get it, sometimes.

My question, can anyone start SPF if they are up early on a Friday? Or is that only Moo's job?

I've started SPF before, but it was quite a while ago. Anyone can post to it (hint, hint all you lurkers).

It's usually Moo who starts it. I think it's because he doesn't sleep.

Robo-Moo perhaps?

And NIK? Can I bring my dog?

That's because Moo goes to so many g2gs that he can be in a different time zone at any given moment.

My lawn? Well...

I MAY have gone off on some members (cough - Ama and some other youngsters - cough) who were sassing me about how young they were. I MAY have made a statement about "kids these days" and I MAY have posted a pic something like this...

...and the resident Wisenheimers made sure that stuck. Crabby ol' NIK yelling at kids to get off her lawn = comedy gold, apparently.

Ah well, hubby's her person anyway though I'll do in a pinch...

So, how big a yard we talking here? Postage stamp? Half the lot? Half acre or multiples of? Wait, you're in Iowa, right? Lots of space out there so I'm betting it's big enough for LOTS of SIers along with the aforementioned campfire.

Were you there last year when I went out of town and Moo invited everyone over for a lawn party? I'm pretty sure they found a pool, a stage for a band... It's a fair sized lawn, is what I'm saying.

My question, can anyone start SPF if they are up early on a Friday? Or is that only Moo's job?

When I first arrived another member would traditionally start SPF every friday at 9am Eastern time (EDT or EST depending on the time of the year). Her workplace put in a firewall so she could no longer do it so she had asked me to make sure it got started. I've continued to do so since. I try to start it at a consistent time every week. For what is Friday in one part of the world is Thursday here and because there are many more lurkers that look forward to reading but don't necessarily post. The few times a year that I know I won't have access I'll ask someone to make sure it gets started.

Post parties celebrations?

This started years before me and anyone can throw one. You can throw one for yourself. Unfortunately over the years, the number of members that actually watch peoples post counts dwindled and it became pretty much just me. In had been common practice to celebrate every 1,000 posts but many members who didn't post in F&G got left out. I try to watch and capture each member as the hit 1,000 post mark and then I watch for members hitting multiples of 5,000. But anyone can throw a party if they want one.

Just a comment re; the campfire on NIK's lawn: if you're making s'mores, I strongly advise using Ghiradelli chocolate squares for grown-up treats. Hershey's is fine for those sassy kids, but Ghiradelli s'more are da bomb!
