User Topic: So tired of telemarketing calls

We are now receiving over 10 telemarketing calls a day on the land line. The worst are the robo-calls and the one's where nobody responds on the other end.

Does anyone have a tip for making these telemarketers go away or at least reducing the number of calls? I have tried registering with the national "Do Not Call" list, but it's not helping. We have pretty much stopped answering the land line and letting it go to voicemail.

Thanks in advance.

YES!!!

http://nomorobo.com/

Free service. Your phone will ring only once, and if it's a robocall it kills the call after one ring.

You can add numbers that it *misses* as you like.

There's an online national "do not call registry" as well.
Simply input your phone numbers (land and mobile).

Every now and then I get a wild hair and decide to have fun with these.

My favorite game:

Ask where they're calling from. And then get in an argument with them about whether said location is in the United States or not. Example:

"Hello, Mrs. SSC, this is SoAndSo calling from SuchAndSuch company with an exciting offer for you!"

Me: "Where are you located?"

TM: "Boston."

Me: "Oh, I'm sorry. I only do business with American companies. I don't do business with Canadian companies on principle."

TM: "Boston IS in the United States. It's in Massachusetts."

Me: "I don't know what they're teaching y'all in those Canadian schools, but you should really study a globe."

They will totally lose the plot and argue to convince me that they're in the US. At some point I usually hang up.

My favorite call EVER was from an online pharmacy trying to sell phentermine to JM.

TM: "Hello, this is Sanjay calling from XYZ pharmacy for Mr. JMSSC".

Me: "What is this regarding?"

TM: "He has purchased phentermine in the past, and we have a special offer."

Me: "My husband died three months ago."

TM: "Oh, I am so sorry, Ma'am."

Me: "It was from phentermine."

TM: "Oh, I am so sorry to disturbed you, ma'am."

And JM was sitting there looking at me like

Please try the site I mentioned. We are experts

You really don't want to answer, it lets them know it's a legit number. The DNC registry hasn't worked well for us.

This is precisely why I disconnected my land line. With the exception of a few calls sporadically from friends, I realized I was paying monthly rate plus all the God-awful fees for a telephone line that merely served to irritate me. I disconnected it and haven't looked back.

IDK, Truly. HFSSC's solution sounds like much more fun.

But yours IS easier....

I used to hand the phone to the toddler so she could practice her newly acquired words skills. Now she's older and is polite but corrects their English.

Depending on your phone service, you may be able to block calls. This is only a viable option if you're getting a lot of repeat calls from a few companies (up to about a dozen). I had to learn how to do this because one of my stepkids decided to go skiing and go to concerts and stuff...instead of paying his bills. (Nice, right?! ) The li'l darlin' (now 30) had either given our number on an application as a reference or they'd figured out the connection...either way, it was a call-fest.

Anyway, FWIW....

How long ago did you register on the Do Not Call list? It takes some time for that to work, but has done well for us for many years. Also, we make sure we report all of the calls we do get. There is a place to do that on the list. On a recent local news story they recommended reporting, so now I am even more confident it makes a difference. Robocalls are really getting out of control!

Sand has a habit of answering the phone with "It's all over, but there's blood everywhere. What do I do with the body?". Usually they hang up.
