This week's theme is school (K-12)

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

50-yard dash

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

History

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

Well, there was this boy that I thought way really cute. He was a year ahead of me so I looked him up in the yearbook to find his name. For a month I would pass him in the hall and smile and say hi. He didn't respond at first but after a week or two he would say hi back. One day as I was approaching him, he got a big smile on his face and said "hey you!". I smiled really big then watched him pass right by me and hug the girl behind me. I felt about an inch tall. I stopped saying hi to him after that.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Band geek: Marching, Symphonic, and Jazz Band; played clarinet and tenor sax.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

French

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
Anything but math or math-based sciences.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.
I fell once on the way to the stage to pick up an award on awards day. I'm just THAT graceful. Good times.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .) Band!

5. What foreign language(s) did you take? Spanish- for four years. Never did achieve fluency.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

Um....yeah. This girl doesn't run. Ever. I'd kick ass at the sitting on the bleachers gossiping with friends event.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Art and English.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

Um...once I was being a loud, obnoxious, ass in the cafeteria...and I saw a friend in the lunch line. I RAN (I guess I do run for food), over to her, and in the process, I slipped and fell on someone else's spilled sauteed onions. I fell flat on my back, and when I got up I had onions on my butt. I was "Onion Butt" for the rest of the day.

(I was a junior in HS when this happened)

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Hmm...we were the odd group that was friends with the jocks, brains, bandies, and preps. I guess we were the "melting pot".

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

French. But Bonjour is about all I know.

1) Best event: spectator

2) History

3) At a college interview, the admissions officer told me to turn one way, and I immediately turned the other. Luckily, knowing left from right wasn't a requirement.

4) Nebbishes

5) Hesitating a bit - Latin, French (hated it), German (hated it), Chinese, Japanese. At one point my Chinese helped me get through a French text. Personally, I think we'd be better off if we all wrote and spoke the Latin of Cicero and Julius Caesar.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
1 mile, or cross country 5k

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
Biology or Chemistry

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

When I lived in California there were outdoor covered walkways instead of hallways. I was walking along and saw a friend across the quad, I waved and was going to say "Hi Tina!" What I actually said was, "Hi *DOOOOONGGGG*" then woke up on the sidewalk with all these faces looking down at me. Yeah, I know conked myself out walking into a pole.

Then same school year, we had a sub in Chemistry class...you know, the classroom with all the long black tables and tall stools. I was being a brat and leaning back in my chair against the desk behind me. The chair slipped and again I woke up with all the faces looking down at me. Then I went to get stitches.

Oh yeah, forgot about this one. I was a military brat so I moved schools a lot. My first day of school at the aforementioned school in Cali (luckily I only went to this school for the one year) my History teacher made everyone stand and say their name and something about themselves. I was in the far back corner of the room and as the self introductions went up and down the rows I kept getting more and more anxious. When it was finally my turn I stood up and said, "My name is..... " then as the teacher is I'm still standing there and obviously have his (and everyone else's) attention but I raise my hand anyway. He says, "....yes...?" Me:"Can I be excused?" Him: "um Yeah! " I dropped that class and changed my schedule. I never wanted to go back to school again.

Is that enough or should I keep going?

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Depends on which school. I reinvented myself every time we moved. In high school in Cali I was with the bad kids/stoners. In the school I graduated from I was a jock/prep/smart kid. I actually got to spend two years at that school and I loved it there. The six years prior to that I moved schools every year.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
German

1. I'd work the concession stand so I could stay out of the sun and protect my pasty complexion.

2. Writing.

3. I fainted in Chemistry class my senior year. Bounced face first off the lab table, hit the lab table behind me with the back of my head, and then hit the concrete floor. Woke up bleeding all over the dreamiest guy in the class as he was carrying me to the nurse's office. Ended up with nine stitches, two black eyes, and a neck brace. Fun times.

4. My friends were a little bit of everything. Super smart but not nerdy, athletic but not jocks, friendly with everyone but not popular...

5. Español

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in? I was on track when I was in high school. The 400m sprint was my best event.

2. What was your favorite subject in school? It is a tie between English and Social Studies (History). I love reading and I love specific historical eras.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school. It was summer and I'd outgrown my bathing suit from the prior year. My mom let me use hers til we could get to the store. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that the top portion, being a bit large to start with and having become water-logged, had drooped down below my budding boobicles.
While I failed to notice, the rest of the pool and surrounding area DID notice.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .) I had friends in each group, but my closest friends and I were misfits anyway.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take? I took Spanish from the first year it was offered in junior high all through high school. I love languages and am trying to learn French now.

1. The mile

2. Choir - jazz

3. Joking around before a performance one night, wearing a horrendous white tux a group of us bought from an closeout tux place, jumped on the back of a vehicle in the parking lot, and was covered with road grime. So, I stood in back of everyone when we went on stage...

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

50 yard dash. 1st place baby!!

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

English

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

In my junior year of HS, my buddy was sitting behind me in math class. I forget what he whispered in my ear but it made me laugh so hard, that I had to bite down on my tongue and I exhaled through my nose at the same time. I blew snots all over myself in the middle of the teacher's lesson. Oh yeah, she saw but didn't miss a beat. I pretty sure others saw as well. My friend is still laughing 25 years later. Just gross.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Well, I was the kid who died his hair blue, wore the ripped up clothes and combat boots, was in a band, and hung around with the geeks to talk about the "finer things" in life. Why limit yourself to just one hat?

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

Espanol.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

Building sand castles in the long-jump pit. True story.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

It was a tie - Human Bio because Stanford would donate cadavers for us to dissect, and Computer Science because I rewrote Pong in Basic and passed the class at midterm. (It was a challenge the teacher offered every year. I stayed in the class after that because it was fun.)

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

I was literally the ONLY senior who didn't cut on senior cut day because my mom threatened to take away my car. It sucked to be on campus that day.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

I bounced between the alternative(stoner!), jocks, and braniac crowd, with a handful of preppy friends. My HS was actually very well blended, we had groups but most people belonged to a couple.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

I took Latin all four years.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

None of them. I am a klutz and was never good with any sort of athletic pursuit. I prayed to be sick on field day.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

All of them. I was such a dork.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

I didn't get my drivers license until halfway thru my senior year. I just had no interest in driving. The first time I drove to school, it was a foggy, misty morning and I forgot to turn the lights off when I got to school. I had early dismissal, and when I went to start the car, discovered the battery was dead. I went to the office to call my dad to come jump start the car. He did not want to come up there and told me to go ask the auto-shop teacher if one of the shop students could help me. Now, I was one of those egg-head, "Smart" kids and I did not associate with the shop students. They were those wild kids that smoked and drank and all that stuff. So I wouldn't even get in the truck with the guy who very nicely volunteered to help me. As I got close to the car, I started going through my purse to find my keys. Couldn't find them. Looked in the car and discovered that I had locked the keys in the car when I went to call my dad. So I had to go back to the office, call my dad again and listen to him yell at me.

By the time he got to school, the regular dismissal bell had rung, and the parking lot was full of kids when Daddy screeched in on 2 wheels and made this HUGE production out of driving around on the band field to get in front of my car and popping the hood. All the other kids were looking at me like, "Oh, yeah, you're the smart kid, all right."

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

I guess, primarily the band kids.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

French for 2 years, Spanish for one year. And then I ended up living in Germany for 3 years.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
I don't remember field day. I would have been good at hula hooping if they had it.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
psychology and English

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.
?? I must have blocked it out!

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, brainiacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)
I had friends in different groups. My main group didn't fit into any category. We were just normal girls.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
Spanish 1st-8th grade one day a week and then 2 years in high school.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

We did but I don't think I had a good event. I wasn't much of a runner back then. I run a lot more now then I did then and some think I'm fast for my age. So I guess I wish I could have field day now. LOL.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Math and Science. Although I took a bunch of architectural drawing classes in high school and some independent study in it. But I went engineering in college so never got into architecture.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

In one of my high school english classes we were asked questions on a book I did not read. I was asked where the main characters hid in the book. One of my "buddies" whispered an answer to me and I stated they hid "in the tree house". Problem was, they were hiding in the garage. So I was just a little embarrassed.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Jocks with Brains

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

I took French so now I make great french fries and french toast

4. Everyone pretty much (only 81 of us)

5. Four years of Spanish and all I can do is insult people...

1. I was always awesome at running short distances. Less than a 1/4 mile and I could usually finish top two.

2. All through grade school it was math, I was even in a math club for two years. In high school it was art, absolutely adored the art teacher and it was the only class I could ever take with my bff.

3. Goodness I was so self conscious everything was embarrassing. The two times I got in trouble were probably the worst. I was a super goody two-shoes, and admitting the reason was so nerdy it hurt.

In third grade I wanted to spend extra time learning to type so I went into the computer lab during recess. The lab teacher wasn't present so when someone caught me in there unattended they made me sit on the red dot. Mortifying.

Then in the 5th grade one of my classmates had a little mental break down, he trashed the class room and was carted off by the police. The rest of the class was dismissed for lunch/recess. A few classmates and I asked the recess aid for permission to return to the class so we could straighten-up, once again, no teacher present so we were reprimanded.

4. I got along pretty well with everyone but I was super shy and kind of a loner. I kind of just bounced around and hung out wherever nobody mentioned how quite I was being

5. In elementary I was learning sign language, but then I moved and Spanish was the only option through high school.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

I've never been to a track and field day but I was really good at cross country.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

English and history.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

We used to hide our phones in our pencil cases so we could text during class. One day during a science lesson, my teacher caught me reading a text my boyfriend at rhe time had just sent me. My teacher took my phone off me and read the text aloud to the class. Unfortunately it was rather explicit in nature, detailing what my BF was going to do when he saw me. I was mortified but so was my teacher, he tailed off reading the text, went bright red and handed me back the phone. He began talking very enthusiastically about osmosis and didn't look me in the eye for the rest of the year.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

I went to an English all girls Catholic school. We didn't really have groups, just 'popular but bitchy', 'geeks' and then everyone else. I was in the 'everyone else' group. Not massively popular, not disliked, average grades.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

French and German. I suck at both.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
I was really good at eating the popsicles they handed out after the events.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
I liked mini-courses the best; these were offered during period of about 2 weeks each winter, and were a complete departure from almost anything offered, academically, at the time. There were a variety of interesting vocational and artistic courses, as well as interesting trips. My first (and to date, only) trip abroad was for a mini-course....I got invaluable exposure to British pubs.
3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.
I got my period right before French class, and asked the teacher, before class started, if I could go to the nurse quickly. She pointedly asked me to explain, en francais, precisely WHY I had to go to the nurse. In front of the class. A friend came to my rescue, literally whisking me from the room while hissing, "she's got to go to the nurse!---NOT en francais--at the teacher.
4.
How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)
I grew up in the Land of Preppy. So that, as a label, is redundant, because we ALL were preppy. It's still the norm in the area. That said, I was a group-hopper. I didn't really think I fit in with any of the groups, but am told I did with all. Basically, I was a pretty good kid who did a fair amount of stuff I shouldn't have, while still holding down a job and getting good grades. Like most kids, I guess.
5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
French. It's been ever so useful. You know, like when reading menus. (Actually, my dog speaks French. I don't know how I figured this out, but he responds much more readily to commands given in French. So I guess it's useful.)

I was really good at coming in last in the 800 m.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Sciences

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

During my sophomore year a girl asked for my phone number. I was so nervous I forgot my number and too embarrassed to tell her that, so I made one up. She never spoke to me again...

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Stoners/D&D outcasts

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

English, that was tough enough, though I did have friends who took elvish and dwarvish (see question #4).

I was late for 1st period Geometry my senior year. The classroom's window faced the parking lot. I was racing up the service drive when one our town's "finest in blue" stopped me for speeding. My entire 1st period witnessed the event. I got teased about that for months.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

Jump Rope champ of 2nd grade! That was probably the last athletic thing I ever did. I actually lettered in high school for being the Varsity Basketball scorekeeper for 4 years...

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Comp Sci and AP Bio

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

I used to wear loafers in high school, and somehow I was forever making the rear edge of the heel hit the floor just right so as to completely slide out from under me and down I'd go. Happened a lot.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Braniacs and proud of it. That changed DRAMATICALLY when I got to college and flunked out of everything...

French

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

I would not be good in any of these events. I was usually chosen last if we had to choose teams in gym class. But hey, I'm 55 and ran my first 5K this weekend. While I didn't "win" any race, I am quite aware that most 55 year old women including those more athletic ones I went to school with, were NOT out there running a 5K.
What was your favorite subject in school?

Math. Still is. I'm a math teacher and math professor.
3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

Too many to mention but I guess the time that I was involved in writing a nasty letter to a bully and the principal ended up seeing it.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

I was most interested and somewhat competitive with some of the braniacs but I can't say they were really my "friend group." In fact the person who was 3rd in my class basically would not speak to me because he thought himself better than me. I was 4th and I wish I'd tried just a bit harder so I could have taken his rank position. Oh, well, a little late for that now!

I only had a couple of close friends and they were not braniacs, were more average but we did have some interests in common (like roller skating and chasing boys) They were not nerds, jocks or braniacs, nor were they preppy.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
French. It was the only one offered in my school. A lot of people did not take any foreign language. You don't have to. My daughter didn't take any in high school but ended up majoring in Asian Languages and Cultures in college (is now working on her Ph.D. in that same field).

HFSSC:
I didn't get my drivers license until halfway thru my senior year. I just had no interest in driving.

I didn't get mine until about that same time but unlike you it was not because I had no interest. It was because I was so nervous and had zero self-confidence. I failed my road driving test three times because of this. That was more than embarrassing; it was downright humiliating but I don't recall that the kids in school were aware of it so I didn't list that as one my embarrassing school moments. My younger sister got her license before I did. I can't think of anything more humiliating than that!

I was extremely invested in getting my license because my mother never learned to drive. A huge part of my life story is watching the sad life my mother lived, dependent on my father who treated her terribly. I felt her life might have been quite different if she had the independence that would come with being able to drive.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
I don't remember if they had one and I would have sucked at any of the events. But now? I'd be best at running...best shape of my life and ran another 5K this past weekend.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
biology - I wasn't good at it but the teacher was awesome.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school. I've blocked it all out...

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .) didn't really belong anywhere. I just showed up and got thru the days. got along with everyone and just floated around...Oh, and maybe a Mom to my younger sister and her friends...I was the one they called when they were in trouble and needed help, which was often. They were definitely the rebels.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take? 1 year of Spanish as HS senior; had only been made mandatory a few years before and it was either Spanish or French. we learned German at home

Can running backwards be one of them? I was surprisingly good at running backwards very quickly.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Social Studies.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

I'd often forget my gym suit at home and have to wear the ones the school kept on-hand....the shirts were usually still sweaty from the kid the class before, and the shorts were those 1970's style NBA-style daisy duke type-joints.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

I didn't really have a friend group. I had a few friends, but none of us were distinct enough to be in a group.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

None, in High School. Wasn't required.

No one had cell phones when I was in high school. I can't remember if they weren't invented yet, or if they were too expensive for kids to have them.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event?

I was on the track team, Mile and 2-mile. I had about a 5:20 mile which was unfortunately not too competitive where I grew up. I used to run 7-8 miles every afternoon after school.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

1. My school didn't have a track and field day. We just had Field Day. (It was founded by the military).

2. Tie between English, Graphic Arts and Civics. Our Civics classes had the tendency to go off on completely unrelated tangents, which was cool.

3. On my 16th birthday, the other kids shouted out birthday "salutations" while in the dining hall. They're the main reason I'm indifferent to it now.

4. I was basically a loner but I guess you could say I was one of the "brainiacs".

5. We didn't have a foreign language class.

I just have to comment on the foreign language thing. In the state I live in, which is different than the one where I grew up, you have to take 4 years of a FL to get into a state college.

Have those requirements changed elsewhere too?

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

I ran cross-country for a few years in high school, so I'll go with any long-distance running event I suppose.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Creative Writing with World History a close second.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

Got handcuffed and pulled out of class and by 2 armed Sheriffs. Turns out someone with my first name was discovered to have a large amount of weed in their locker and the school gave them my name instead of the actual offender. The "error" was fortunately discovered before I was taken off school grounds. My parents almost sued...

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Mostly braniacs, some jocks. Well, by my senior year, I was hanging out more with "questionable" folks. I guess I never put myself in any group fully.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

Spanish

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
50 yard dash, set the school record in 5th grade. LOL. It was DESTROYED a year later by some 3rd grade girl who went on to be a Super Soccer Star (like think Olympic team).

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
Sciences of course.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.
I passed out in band, and dropped my horn. The band director thought I was duncing around and yelled at me.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Band Geeks, and Drama Kids.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
French. Not sure why I took it, and why my parents allowed it. Spanish would have helped a hell of a lot more.

I won a ribbon in the sack raise!

I liked everything and History and whatever science class I was taking was my favorites. I loved physics and biology the most. Oh and trig. I <3 TRIG!

In senior English we made a movie instead of taking a final. I remember I was the writer and director and it was based on the Wizard of Oz. There was an action shot where "Dorothy" was supposed to fall down a stairwell (to get a concussion so she would go off to Oz). I didn't think my friend was doing it realistically enough so I kept demanding extra takes.... until she actually DID fall down the stairs and knocked herself out on the landing. What a fantastic CRACK that was! Even though the ambulance came and my friend got admitted I of course used that take! my friends gave me he'll about that! And my friend ended up doing fine. I even cut class for the first time ever to follow the ambulance to the hospital.

I got along with everyone. I was in honors and band but was comfortable hanging out with just about anyone... Except the theater people scared me.

I took a useless dead language: Latin. It was HARD. But I took it for the toga party. I should have taken espanol porque es muy importante hablar espanol aqui en la suroeste de grande. Sigh.

1. I loved the sprint races. I always won the 40-yard dash!

2. I loved math. I loved psychology as well. My favorite individual class was on photography.

3. I got sent to the principal's office in 3rd grade, because a buddy and I thought it was a good idea to hang on the bathroom stall doors and swing back and fourth (of course, while we were suppose to be in class). We did that until one of the doors broke and we both got ass swats (yes, back in the day when you were allowed to spank kids in school).

4. I was a blend of the jocks and outdoorsmen.

5. German, French and Spanish. I liked my foreign languages!

I just have to comment on the foreign language thing. In the state I live in, which is different than the one where I grew up, you have to take 4 years of a FL to get into a state college.
Have those requirements changed elsewhere too?

At my school it was 2 years. I was going to take 4, until I discovered the upper levels were taught by a teacher who taught my mom, two uncles, and two sisters. Not to mention he knew my grandmother from church and, umm...she wasn't the most upstanding member. He intimidated the hell out of me. Ever take a class from someone who knows your whole family? It's impossible to quietly skate by.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in? If we had one, um, shot put

2. What was your favorite subject in school? Recess, lunch, whatever involved NOT going to class.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school. I tried out for cheer leading and busted my ass trying to do a cartwheel.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)It's a mix of jocks, brainiacs, hipsters, and, well, stoners

5. What foreign language(s) did you take? Spanish

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn''t then which event do you think you would have been best in?

Sprinting

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Anything biology-related. Biology, biochem, microbiology, zoology...

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

My first year in public grade school (6th grade) I didn''t realize that you did not have to stand to answer a question (we always had to do that in Catholic school.) I stood to read an essay I''d written (it was funny or supposed to be funny). My wraparound skirt unwrapped in the back. Everyone was laughing, and I thought it was because me essay was so humerous.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Geeks. Definitely geek. Until senior year, then I became an AV geek. I was on stage crew (creating and moving sets for school plays) so I got to hang out in the AV room

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

Six years of French. Can''t speak more than a word or two and usually not well

When DS was in high school (1999-2003), you only had to take one year of a foreign language. (American sign language was considered a foreign language too). DS refused to take even one year. He had absolutely no interest in going to college. He eventually went through work, but he had to take community college courses before he could get into a university program.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in? I was a swimmer, so 50 yard freestyle. Running is against my religion

2. What was your favorite subject in school? History.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school. I was a tomboy. Back in my day they still had jungle gyms, swings etc. But girls were not allowed to wear pants. No problem, I didn't care and would play on the jungle gym. Got called into principle's office because it was not ok to be on the gg with a dress, but yet I couldn't wear pants. My mom had to go to principle's office. They had a discussion. I wore shorts under my dresses from then on.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .) Such the party girl. So lots of partiers, but also jocks.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take? Spanish and it did help me when I lived in a few spanish speaking countries.

Awesome badass street cred though ...

1. I was a champion hider. I'd have a book and a bottle of water and find the perfect hiding spot. If anyone else had realized that we were playing hide and seek, I'm sure I would have been crowned the supreme hider.

2. Drama - I basically WAS the theater department for awhile. I had a lot of say in what went on. That was too cool!

3. I had a nervous breakdown. In school. Towards the beginning of my freshman year. Got taken away by ambulance and was gone for 3 months. Came back to school and EVERYONE KNEW WHO I WAS! Apparently I am the harmless fun kind of crazy, not the psycho killer kind. I was forever after the "crazy theater chick". Plus side: All through the rest of high school, I got away with being as weird as I wanted to be. I was beyond embarrassment. And, yeah...I took the liberty to be a little on the eccentric side...

4. I was the loner who was never alone. I was welcome in all cliques and belonged to none.

5. Spanish. All that was available. I begged for Sanskrit. I was told no.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

Hurdles and high jump and I had a proud moment surrounding an 800 meter run

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Music, Art, Math - in no particular order

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

Hard to narrow it down.

Grade school: My mother was the ultimate helicopter parent. Need I say more? My father taught some of the Family Life classes at my school (Family Life being sort of a sex ed program for Catholic schools). It’s really not cool having your dad explain sex to your friends. I can now appreciate the time they took volunteering at the school, but still…

One more: I was publicly dumped from a clique by the leader of the pack. I got my revenge though. For many years, if an obnoxious guy was pestering me for my name and number I’d give him hers' instead.

High school: My older sister and I went to the same school. She was part of a fast and partying crowd and had become mean. As a newly arrived freshman she liked to embarrass me. One day in the hallway she plopped a huge stack of books in my arms and while I was struggling with them she pulled my shorts from underneath my uniform skirt down to my ankles. Thank goodness 8 years of prior experience wearing those skirts taught me to wear shorts underneath. I’m happy to report that my sister and I are now quite close.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Eclectic. Funny, smart, diverse, sometimes athletic. An array of young women with multiple interests. Mildly partying. Not sure what that’s called. OMG were we the misfits?

I’d like to mention that in addition to my own group and the wealthy/cheerleading/popular group there was a Boy George group.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

Spanish in grade school and French in high school. Japanese and Braille shortly after.

It's nice getting to know each other. Thanks for the thread.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
I was good at all distance runs...still am.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
Biology

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.
We were very poor. Some girls decided to make fun of me in the lunch room for only owning 2 pair of jeans.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)
Mixture. I was nice and not a snob, so I got along with most people in all groups.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
I speak Spanish, some Ukranian, but I took formalized German classes after HS.

1. The multi-legged race. Our teachers thought it was fun to watch more than two of us tie legs together and try to run. I think 6 people was the biggest. I was really good at organizing our class team and making everyone practice. We almost always won simply because we had a plan and didn't just topple all over each other.

2. Band. Definitely band.

3. My senior year, our band director decided to have us march with odd spacing (3 people in between each yardline instead of having a person on every yardline and two in between). To help us get used to the change, he marked exact spacing on long pieces of 1" PVC pipe. I was section leader and one of my jobs was to run the 'pacing pole' through our section so everyone was spaced correctly. But, I'm clumsy. I tripped over my own feet on our asphalt practice field. When I hit the ground, the end of that 5 yard piece of PVC pipe did too. I stayed on the ground. The pipe sailed through the air making sure that all 120 members of our band saw me.

4. Band geeks. But, our school was small (graduated 150), so I knew everyone. I spent a lot of time with the FFA and 4-H kids. And our 'gifted' kids had been lumped into the same classes since grade school. I had a group of church friends. I still see a lot of the people I graduated with at least weekly. Our kids are all growing up together now.

5. Spanish. 2 years. I wanted to take French, but it conflicted with my honors and music classes. About the only thing I remember is that we didn't take year two very seriously. We spent most of the year trying to say certain popular phrases in Spanish. The most memorable 'muestrame el dinero' (yeah, Jerry McGuire was popular then). Also, we were required to take a year and they recommended anyone on a university track take two or more.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?

Skipping school that day and going drinking instead. I made that into an event any day and I was good at it.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Creative Writing and Art

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

In HS, I was talking to a cute guy friend not realizing that Aunt Flo came to visit and her presence was very easy to see in the position which I was sitting. At one point during the conversation his eyes kinda of bugged out of his head (I didn't realize till later why that happened), so I know he noticed, but he said nothing about it at the time or later. That wasn't really surprising because he was always a nice guy. I was still horrified though and didn't want to face him the next day. I was more cautious about the positions I sat after that.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

Party/Troublemaker types for the most part. By the end of HS I knew and talked to most of the groups in the school and could find something in common with just about any of them.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

French. A trip to Montreal has inspired me to try to learn it again.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
I was terrible at pretty much anything that required physical coordination. But ask me to coordinate handing out juice boxes and I was a star.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
English.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school. By 7th grade, I had been madly in love with Mickey Norse (name changed to protect ... everyone) for four years. One day my best friend Megan and I were talking in the hallway, and she (very) loudly called me "Mrs. Norse" --- while Mickey was standing just three lockers away. He turned around and looked at us. I ran into the bathroom crying. Today we're facebook friends and have zero interaction. He's married and went bald at 26. I'm divorced and happy.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)
Fine Arts B was what we were called in the "geography" we had to do for my senior year of high school. The whole class had to work together to map the social strata of our class (300+ students). Every single clique was mapped, and people were placed into or between cliques by name. It was pretty intense.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
Four years of Spanish, three years of French. Neither helped when I moved to China, where I studied Mandarin full time immersed for two years.

I was shot put champion.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?

Writing. Always.

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.

Oh, too many to count, most of them had to do with the fact that I hit puberty younger than my classmates (5th grade)... lots of embarrassment there... thinks "shower scene from the movie Carrie"...

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)

I was a total loner when I was young (unless I was playing sports with the boys, but few of them were actually my "friends". In high school I was one of the punk rockers/stoners/drama kids.

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

Espanol.

1. If your school had a track and field day, what was your best event? If it didn't then which event do you think you would have been best in?
None. I played other sports but running and field events were not a strong point.

2. What was your favorite subject in school?
history

3. Tell something embarrassing that happened to you at school.
We were carving with ivory soap and I had a bad skin reaction to that particular soap. For the rest of the year there was a rumor that I was allergic to all soap and never bathed with any soap and that's why I smelled bad. This was 4th grade.

4. How would you classify your friend group in school? (Jocks, braniacs, band folks, Preppy, . . . .)
Mixed bag. One teacher told me I was "semi-goth" I had some preppy friends, goth friends, jocks.
5. What foreign language(s) did you take?
Spanish

copy and paste DixieD's answers as all but #5 are exactly what I would have written .. we were probably friends in high school!

5. What foreign language(s) did you take?

Spanish. I was so horrible at it (the part of a normal brain that lets you learn foreign languages...mine is missing, or burned out from my extracurricular activities ) that the teacher told me to just sit in the back of class, be quiet, and she would pass me with a D. good enough for me .
