11th Annual Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing Celebration

The Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing Celebration commemorates the 158th anniversary of the attempted escape by a small group of freedom seekers, including Mary Meachum, to cross the Mississippi River at St. Louis, to reach safety in Illinois. The Meachum site is the first nationally recognized Underground Railroad site in the state of Missouri. The program includes a fully costumed re-enactment at 3:00 p.m. of the original freedom crossing with the Mississippi River as the natural backdrop. To reach the event take Interstate 70 to Grand Avenue, go east on Grand toward the Mississippi River. Grand will curve left and becomes Hall Street. Continue on Hall Street ¼ mile to the next street (Prairie Avenue). Look for a Fire Department American flag and Riverfront Trail sign. 125th Annual Annie Malone May Day Parade and McDonald's™ May Day Blues Fest
