Wow. That's amazing photo. The subject is incredible, but the fact that you saw it, and were actually able to shoot it -- so clearly, too-- is what's really amazing. Good work, D! I can't wait for your book to be published.

Thanks, everyone.

I was only able to get the series of shots by being in the right place at the right time, and by spending a solid 20 minutes with my camera trained on the feeding Heron. He was already in my sights and the camera was on him when he caught it. It's pretty much the only way you catch something like this.

Defiance.

Great shots. Most people do not realize how hard it is to come up with shots like that. Yes, you do have to get a little lucky, but you put yourself in the right place and knew what to do when the "right time" happened.

What gear were you using? I do a lot of nature photography too. It is so easy to miss a moment like that. You wait and wait, but lose attention and then it happens. You miss it. Those animals seem to know how to mess up your best efforts.

dipstick,

I use 2 cameras and 2 main lenses.

These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 7D and a 400mm L-Series F5.6 prime lens, without IS.

The other camera is a Canon EOS 50D.

I also have a 300mm F4 Canon L-Series Prime lens (with IS).
