We bought a treadmill. I haven't used it yet. My day to begin it is tomorrow. Today, my exercise is to reorganize the room around the treadmill

I've done good with staying on track with food and I even went to work out today. I did a vigorous 25 minute walk with an incline with a decent speed and the elliptical kicked my butt. I only lasted five minutes on that one but I'll build up time on that one. That one you can feel it working you hard....

I'm just happy I motivated myself to get moving again.

Let's keep the good vibes going !!!

Awesome SW!!

I did great on nutrition today .. despite tough circumstances. Took two 3 yr olds to the grocery store and did a huge shop. It took so long and was so chaotic that I got them McDonalds on the way home. But I resisted.. came home.. put everything away and still ate healthy. Phew.

Thank goodness there was leftovers in the fridge to heat up.. because I was ravenous.

TryingToBreathe ( member #14935) posted at 9:40 AM on Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Hi, all!

I'm a little late to this party, but the title caught my eye.

My story is similar to sadscoop's, in that I yo-yo'd for years -- I had my skinny, fit years, and then I had my "blimp" years.

I was a runner and a dedicated exerciser until I met my X. He was a devoted non-exerciser and over time, his bad habits rubbed off on me.

We were together for almost 14 years, and it seemed that I added about 5 lbs. per year, helped along by the fact that I had to take prednisone for about 5 years for my asthma (now managed with Advair -- my godsend!!) When I couldn't breathe, I couldn't exercise, and the weight just seemed to pile on by itself.

Last April was D-Day for me, and within about a 2-month time span, I lost about 40 lbs., and have since lost another 15. At one point during my relationship, I hit 172. I'm only 5'5", so I was wearing a size 16 and climbing! Now, I fluctuate between 110-115, and I let the fit of my clothes tell me how I'm doing.

A couple of things were key for me. I signed up with Team in Training, a group that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, by training people to run or walk marathons/half-marathons or triathlons. At first, I signed up just to have a reason to get up in the morning, as my X moved on and in with OW. I thought that at some point during the training that I would drop out, but what a surprise!! The more I kept up with the group training sessions, the more passionate I became about the cause and the workouts. I also developed friendships with others and gained such a sense of purpose from raising money for such a worthwhile cause.

Long story longer, I went on to complete my very first marathon last October, and ran a half-marathon in December, dressed as Elvis, but that's another story!!

I'm training for ANOTHER marathon in March, and have committed to 2 others during 2008. My body has taken on a whole new shape, although all the exercise in the world won't cure the excess skin that was created from those years of excess and neglect. I guess at some point I'll have to start a *nip and tuck* thread to talk about how I solved that problem!

I don't even follow a points plan now, although I still remember it well from my WW days. I mostly eat fresh veggies, fruits, tons of Boca Burgers, Gardenburger riblets, buffalo wings (vegetarian) and lots of Weight Watchers and Lean Cuisine entrees. Just this week, my market had Lean Cuisine dinners and pizzas @ 6 for $10. I stocked up big time!! I also buy lots of yogurt -- nonfat and lowfat Dannon. Those little containers make great, guilt-free snacks.

I also drink buckets of coffee everyday. Believe it or not, research has shown that coffee is great prior to exercise! It works for me.

One of the things I learned in training was that it's better to eat AFTER exercise, as your body's metabolism is working at its peak for about an hour after vigorous exercise and will be more efficient at burning calories. So, go run, do your treadmill, a fast walk or whatever -- then, go eat!!

Also, if you're not eating pre-packaged food, it's really easy to be careless with portion sizes. That alone is a diet killer. A rule of thumb is to keep portion sizes to the size of your fist. Comes in handy if you're eating out and wondering how much of something you should eat.

If you have El Pollo Loco in your area, this place is a fast-food godsend!! All sorts of foods on their menu that are healthy and diet-friendly. They also post a nutrition list, stating calories of each item, as well as fat grams, if you're keeping score. Many days, I've hit the drive-thru, ordering different veggies, salads, beans and I'm always full when I'm finished.

If you eat at Taco Bell, the bean burrito is another good choice.

Words to look for when ordering are *baked, steamed, broiled, boiled, grilled*. Items to avoid like the plague are *breaded, fried, deep-fried*.

Just in case any of you are thinking that you can't do this, let me tell you that I am in my 50s and am wearing a smaller size now than when I was in high school. My X's cheating may have kick-started my weight loss, but I have taken the ball and literally run with it, You can, too!!

Keep up the great work, everyone. You can do this. WE can do this!! We are strong. We are beautiful. We are invincible!! (Oh God, now I sound like that Helen Reddy song.

I'll stop now. )

Woo! You folks are seriously rockin' the exercise. I think this week I'm back to a normal-ish schedule with the eight billion children we have lying around the joint. That means I'll start walking in the evenings. The jury is still out on my Christmas present of a Curves membership. I've decided to sacrifice that for more money to spend on daycare/MDOs, since I'm falling behind on my studies and need some quiet time during the day to work on writing. Ah well.

In another thread at some point, I wrote about my size/clothing goal. I wrote that I wanted to comfortably wear a belt with my jeans again, and I'd celebrate by buying a big belt buckle, the huge cowgirl kind. I'm going to have the word "Kickass!" engraved on the back of the buckle.

Well guess what? I found the buckle. It's at a ranch shop called Callahan's south of Austin. The front has a bluebonnet embossed on it, and the border looks like wildflowers. It's girly. I like it. So now I have a visual to go with my goal. I'm not kidding you, I went to grab something out of the fridge last night and the image of that belt buckled popped into my head. I closed the fridge door and got myself a glass of ice water instead. HA!

Yes, I'm goofy. But it works for me, and Mr. Threnody doesn't seem to mind.

So walking this week, I think I can start. And maybe in six months I can go buy that buckle and head to the engraver's.

Walked 4 miles today in 70 minutes (2 miles in the morning.. 2 in the evening).

Weigh in is Wednesday.. but I peeked today and the scale had finally gone down.

2 pounds.. hey it's a start.

I was kicking back watching TV tonight and got up the motivation to do some leg lifts and some other exercises for 25 minutes while I watched TV. It wasn't a formal workout but I didn't just sit on my butt watching TV. I did various abdominal and butt exercies while the movie was playing.

Tomorrow I'm back on the treadmill and the elliptical at the clubhouse.

I'm making life changes by just keeping my head in the game. I still had plenty of points for dinner plus my bank points to go out to eat with out of town family. I got a big pork chop and scaped off the sauce, baked potato with no butter and a salad with lite ranch on the side and used so little it could hardly be counted.

I wish I could just wake up and be thin again but I've got to do what it takes to get there. So far my head is in the game.

I did really well on Friday and Saturday.....yesterday, um...not so much. I was at my in-laws for the playoff games and while I could have been worse, I definitely could have been better with my food choices.

But ~ today's a new day (and a new week) and so far I'm on the right track. I actually made myself breakfast this morning, packed lunch and brought yogurt and an apple for a snack. I'm working on my first water bottle of the day and have my pack of gum all handy for when I get a craving. I'm feeling REALLY good about today!

Question for anyone who uses SparkPeople. I created a recipe (used what I'm making for dinner tonight) and saved it. When I went searching for other recipes, I found a recipe almost identical to mine but the calorie count per serving was a lot lower. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong when entering in the information???

I've used the recipe builder on Sparkpeople as well but never thought about its accuracy, just trusted it to be right.....hmmmm. Could the serving sizes be different?

Well I'm in for the long haul here! I've joined Curves and go everyday at noon time with a co-worker. My son's college graduation is this May and I want to look and feel my best since XWH will be there and part of me wants to metaphorically stick out my tongue at him. (want him to see just what he gave up !)

I know it's silly of me but hey at least I'm being honest!

(Something he never had a clue how to be)

I'm heading over to the sparkpeople to check it out..later!

I walked 4 miles yesterday

I'm off for a walk now.. I have to figure out other things to do because the snow is coming and getting myself out there when it is really cold will be challenging.

Well that was a cruddy walk

I walk very fast.. literally if I threw myself a little farther forward I would be running lol.

Yesterday I upped the walk from 2 miles to 4. And today I could not get my body to co-operate with my brain. I was sore and tired .. blah.

And the old shin splints fired up today. Not much .. but I can tell I am just pushing things a little too fast. So I will concentrate on strength training tonight and maybe swim or do something a little more low impact for the next few days.

I think I was channeling your energy tonight meta ~ I dragged my son out of the house to walk with me, and we each had a dog on a leash. We walked 2.5 miles in 45 minutes ~ I could have walked it faster if I was alone, but I'm just glad that I actually got some exercise in today!

I'm shocking myself. The scale being down has me really motivated to keep moving forward. I worked out again tonight. Some nights I won't have time because my H is never home at a decent time but I'll work out what I can when I can.

I walked a vigourous one mile walk on the treadmill with a mild incline. I did the stationary bike for 15 minutes.

It was a good work out and plenty for me. It was about 45 minutes.

Sadly, when I added the calories I burned off....lol...it was only two points....lol. All that workout for two points. It will keep my butt on track because it's hard and it comes off a lot slower than it gets shoved in the mouth...lol.

I hate to say this out loud but one of my motivations is that I have an identical twin sister. I have put on so much weight this last year that I am catching up with her. I see her and see how heavy she is and I don't want to be that heavy. It is more than just a mirror that I'm looking into. I also have a strong family history of diabetes on my biological father's side of the family.

These 40 lbs need to come off so I am happy with how I look, my risk of diabetes goes down and I will be more physically fit.

I'm thrilled that I've worked out three days since weigh in. Last night's was just leg lifts and stuff while watching TV but I wasn't just sitting....so I felt good about it.

I'm down seven pounds as of yesterday. I can't wait to see it go down another number.....

I feel like the little engine that could.....lol.

Oh man my hip area or very top of my legs where they go to the hip are killing me. The bike seemed okay doing it but got me now....lol. H says it's my hip flexor muscle...but ouch.

The thing about a real diet is that it isn't a diet. You goof up, you pick up, dust off and start again the next day. Lifestyle...long picture. Just one day and a blip on a screen. Dust off and start again tomorrow.

HI I'm back! I blew it all weekend but I'm back on track. Right on track with my points yesterday and so far so good today. I'm not going to meetings now - I did WW 4 years ago and so I'm using my old materials. I think it's changed some but that's okay for now. I'm still debating about joining up for meetings because it's hard to find the time.

I think I've lost 3 pounds since last week.

I've been building up the right food again - 100 calorie bread, low fat cheese, spreadable fruit and lots of fruits and veggies.

For breakfast I had yogurt with raspberries and kashi. I love that you get a cup of berries for a point! Right now Im focusing on the right food - next week starts exercise.

Everyone is doing great!

NA -

Yesterday is gone - so you try again today. And we will support you.

I've been down in the back for a few days so I haven't been able to exercise - I'm jealous to hear what everyone is doing. But I'm getting my back worked on today so I should be able to work out on Thursday.

Hang in there everyone!!!!
