George RR Martin's fantasy series starting with a "A Game Of Thrones" is awesome! There are three books out, and the fourth (tentatively) due sometime between now and the end of the universe.
The Terry Goodkind series starting with "Wizard's First Rule" is also a lot of fun, and the Colleen McCollough series of Roman history novels starting with "The First Man In Rome" is indescribably wonderful.

Ok. An oldie but a goodie is the Jean Auel series of Clan of the Cave Bear---in fact, it has been years since I've read that series...might be time for a renewal.....

Zombies?!?!?!?!
DD13 just bought me "Dawn of the Dreadfuls", it is the prequel for "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"
The first few pages are hilarious!!!!

Some great novels that I go back to time and again are
The Green Mile - Stephen King
The Dome - Stephen King
The Dark Tower series - Stephen King
(notice a trend yet.. LOL)
But some others -
Dracula - Bram Stoker
Eat, Pray, Love - Elizabeth Gilbert
All Dan Brown books
I also love reading books that become movies --- If I see a commercial for a movie that says 'best selling novel blah blah blah..." and I like the way the movie seems.. I read the book then watch the movie. Right now starting "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" ... the movie is '127 Hours'

I'll suggest Dean Koontz, He's a bit of a genre jumper IMO.

I LOVED the first three books in this series. Like, LOVED them. I actually burned a giant pot of homemade soup dry because I got into reading the first one and didn't realize how much time had passed. As I get further along in the series, though, I'm kinda falling out of love with it. I'll still read whatever new ones come out, but I won't be rushing out to buy them.
Uh oh... I'm about a third of the way through the third book in the Outlander series. I had to take a little break in between books 2 and 3 and read something else, but I keep getting drawn into this story. I'm a little disheartened you didn't like the other books as much... I guess I could see myself getting kind of sick of the whole thing.

I was not a fan of the twilight series but Stephanie Meyer also wrote "the host". That book gets no regonition and I really enjoyed it. Also If you wanna go the fantasy route The sword of truth series is pretty good, romance, politics, survival it has everything but the last few books get kinda dark.

If you want the "whole other world" type fiction, I'd suggest the Talent series by Anne McCaffery.
The books in the series are:
To Ride Pegasus
Pegasus In Flight
Pegasus In Space
The Rowan
Damia
Damia's Children
Lyon's Pride
The Tower and the Hive
Another good series by her is the Dragonrider's series. You can usually find the first three books in one volume. There are others in the series after that along with peripheral books that tie into the originals somewhere along the timeline.

They aren't bad. They're actually quite good. I just really fell in love with Young Jamie and nothing really compares to him in my mind. However, there are other characters that have taken his place for me in that series. Gabaldon just doesn't focus on those characters as much.

I really enjoyed Gregory Macquires books.
The one most people are familiar with is Wicked.
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is my favorite.
Neil Gaiman's books are a little dark but good escape for me.

i would like to suggest Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel like NA...As a sidenote the 7th(I think) and Last book in this series will be released in March of 2011. If you have never read them you have just enough time to read the whole series and be done by the time the new book comes out.

I would second this series of books. The first is my favorite, but there really arent any 'losers' in the bunch.
I didnt know that there was another coming out this year. Thanks for the heads up!

Another bump for Hunger Games.
I've always been a big Terry Pratchett fan. Very funny, witty, always a good read.
Glen Cook's Black Company series is awesome if you're looking for something grim. His Garret PI books are a fun mix of fantasy + detective books.
For straight up fantasy try the Riftwar Saga by Feist. It's an old one but still a great read.
