Like Stephen King? Give this a go--it was excellent...up until the very end

I have to say, though, the ending is growing on me

I read it a long time ago. I almost didn't because I don't care for animals and thought they took up too much of the book for me. But I stayed with it and really liked it. Have to say the end didn't bother me at all and never thought of Stephen King in relation to this book. I always think of King and "horror" and didn't feel this book had a horror bent.
