This non fiction book by Erik Larson is about an american ambassador and his family in Germany in the mid 1930s just after Hitler comes to power. It describes the slowly growing mass cult of Nazism that went from hopeful optimisim to the fearful oppression of living in a police state. It's like watching a whole culture get sick. Very eerie but fascinating.

These people wrote a lot of letters and diaries so there was much to research and recreate. Very well written and easy to follow.

I enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes good non-fiction and ww2 stuff.

Thanks for the rec. I keep seeing this book pop up as a recommendation for me based on the other books I like.

My library offers ebooks free, so I'll check it out.
