I saw the movie, my DD has it and asked me to watch it with her so I did. Really sad...and disturbing on many levels, at least to me.

I like to read the book before seeing a movie too. Sometimes movies can't convey what you get from reading.

Have you started the book yet?

Yes, and it's good, but I know Hubert Selby writes about the underbelly of humanity. This book is tame compared to the rest...:)

I will read Last Exit to Brooklyn next...it's darker though. His books don't have happy endings or happy goings-on-- But, he says a lot about the human capacity for evil/depravity/addiction...those stuck on the bottom rungs of the ladder of life...that can't seem to ever get unstuck.

I'll report back on RFADream book soon...(I'm supposed to be finishing The Lang. of Flowers for my book club first! It's good, BTW)

That was what was so sad to me, you want so much for these people to pull out of that stagnant world they live in. Sometimes I am drawn to movies/books with those themes, they're more like real life happenings.

Have you finished reading it yet?

I finished the book. I liked it. Yes, it's sad...but I thought it was a real slice of life...the game show mom part was really interesting to me...

I must see the movie now!

I felt so sorry for the mom. Well, all of them really, but mostly her. Enjoy the movie. I don't know how well it follows the book.

Ah, the systematic destruction of hope. The book depressed me, the movie was worse. I think it should be required reading in high schools though.

As for the movie, Ellen Burstyn NAILED Sara Goldfarb perfectly. I was very pleased with her performance in the film.

I loved both the book and the movie...but it is a very depressing story.
