My son has me almost convinced to get a pug for a pet. there is a family selling a 6 month od puppy due to their son having asthma. I keep waffling back and forth....are there any pug owners here who could offer advice?

All I know is once you go pug you don't go back. My fiance was raised with pugs. He thinks they are the most amazing dog breed on the planet. Everything they do is über cute, from snoring to sneezing. He can't look at a picture of a pug without cracking up. Pug owners are a breed unto their own.

Jrazz has pugs. I know she'll be able to give you a wealth of pug knowledge

I have four pugs. They're the best pets ever.
Affectionate, friendly and goofy. They get along well with kids, cats and other dogs. Two caveats: they can be stubborn, training takes patience (and a sense of humor), and they shed like crazy. I've ruined two vacuum cleaners in the last six years

This is me and our pug Jake. He is spoiled absolutely rotten. He is neurotic and I'm convinced he has something like dog-tourettes. (He licks his face like 9 million times in a row, stops for 2 seconds and then starts licking again) He has ESP and knows when JM is on our road about to turn in to the driveway.
But he is sweet and I do love him. I do think almost everything he does is cute.
He does shed a good bit. He saves all of his white undercoat hairs to throw all over our dark brown sofa and anything black I have to wear.
I guess I'm really not selling the breed all that well, huh?

So as I was sayingabout pug people...
95% of the time that I am on SI my fiance is sitting next to me, on his computer, lost in whatever he is doing.
Just now I open up this thread, scroll down to HFSSC's pic and he immediately turns his head and says "Who's that? Doggy?" And then he laughs at the picture. He has a pug radar.

Oh Jake is so cute! And it's hard not to want to spoil a pug.

^^^^I think this is the only drawback to a pug. I have a large collection of pet hair removers and lint rollers. I usually carry one in my bag.

I have to tell y'all about that picture... I was watching TV, minding my own business, when Jake just climbed up and threw his butt down on me like that.

Hey! I just noticed this thread.
We've had pugs for 5 years. The are the loves of my life/ banes of my existence.
((DD3 has asthma so we're a little worried...))
Cons first - Tons of congenital health issues (food allergies, wrinkle maintenance, joint and hip issues later in life). Snoring. Sheds more than any other breed. Read that again - MORE THAN ANY OTHER BREED. I have been covered in pug hair for 5 years.
Pros - Extremely patient and loving. Wonderful with people, especially children. They have the most beautiful little temperaments. They are agreeable and intelligent. They are like lap kitties... they want to be touching you and have your attention. They are HILARIOUS by nature - their affectations make me laugh every day.
In the end it's up to you and your lifestyle. Lotta love, lotta laughter, lotta hair, lotta vet bills.

I don't have them but have several friends who do.
They are awesome dogs. All those that own them it's more like the pugs own the owners.
They shed like crazy. I have Norwegian Elkhounds and they shed more than them and more than my lab when I had her. They can have eye and breathing problems due to breeding to get those features.

We are a big dog family that inherited a pug from a family member who couldn't care for him.
Total pug convert. Jrazz is not kidding about the shedding. Had a longo hair lab/Shep...his shedding was a drop in the bucket compared to the pug.
Also the dental bills for an aging pug are no fun.
We are the fourth home for our pug and he fit right in. You have to admire the spirit of a little thing that can be jerked from home to home and still open his heart from day one.
If you don't mind the shedding.... I would go for it!
I don't respect anyone that can't spell a word more than one way:)

We have a 1-1/2 YO pug ... his name is Marty. I've grown up with and owned only large dogs so I was hesitant about having a pug.
Marty is THE.BEST.DOG.EVER!!
Be mindful that they don't swim very naturally so if you have a pool, like we do, you'll have to spend a lot of time working with it in the pool in order that it will be able to find it's way out should it fall or be pushed in.
Marty loves me but loves my W more - he will always snuggle with her in bed - always - but when she gets up to go to the gym at 4:45 AM he'll nuzzle his way toward me and stay next to me until W returns.
You'll learn the language of SNORT very soon.
They shed - like snowstorms. If you don't get a black pug then NEVER wear black - if you DO get a black pug then ALWAYS wear black...you'll see what I mean.
If you sneak food to him/her under the table at dinner time trust me it'll never forget thus always be there ... and pugs can get fat that way.
They love to go for walks, so walk him/her at least once a day. But they heat up quickly so be careful.
They are stubborn ... they are stubborn ... they are stubborn.
Have fun and post pics!
