What does it mean when a poster starts a thread, then someone replies simply encasing their username in parenthesis?
Like this:
(((((nofool4u))))
And that is all.
Also, when referring to children, someone used DS and DD. Was that a mistake?

A user name in parenthesis is short hand for giving a virtual hug to the username so in your example you just gave yourself a virtual hug
DS and DD - Dear Son and Dear Daughter
