These questions are probably going to be stupid but I'm going to ask them anyway.

There's a job that I want to try for in my town. The job is Secretary to the Principal of our High School.

The only thing the posting asks for is three letters of reference.

Here are my questions...

1. I have three references but not letters, should I ask those people to write letters or should I find a different set of people for the letters and have the other set. So it would be six people, three letters and three other people to contact.

2. Should the letters just be business references or can I include personal reference letters from friends?

I'm not sure which would be the best way to go.

*ETA - I thought of another question. I have two of the three reference letters. They were emailed so they don't have a signature. They're on company letterhead. Will the letters not having a signature be an issue? So much is done electronically these days I've seen a lot of letters without signatures.

I would ask your strongest three professional references to write a letter each. No need to include additional references, although you could note that "additional references available upon request" in your cover letter.

If you don't feel like you have three strong professional references (not sure what your situation is, maybe re-entering the work force?), include as many as you have and pair them with strong personal references who can speak to your skill set from a personal standpoint - your friend who knows how organized you are because you reorganized her kitchen, someone who knows how well you ran the PTA, etc.

My 2 cents would be:

Request letters from your contacts

At least 2 should be job-specific

1 can be a character reference (since it's a school job).

I've asked my best friend from high school and she's going to write a personal/character letter. Now I just need the two business/professional letters.

This would help so much with the kids and days off and holidays. The only thing left I would have to worry about is when my daughter gets sick because when she's sick she out for about a week.
