I spoke to one of my faculty today about my dissertation idea -- I had spoken to an adjunct and she recommended that I use a methodology that he is very familiar with and that I should talk to him about it. I did that today and he agreed the methodology was a good fit and then said "are you asking me to be your chair?" Ummmmm..... I hadn't thought that far except as a "he would be a good possible fit" but yes? He said to write up the proposal and he'd make sure he didn't have any logistical conflicts with my schedule.

Not the elegant way I pictured going about this but I did it! And a year ahead of schedule, which is good given the methodology I just signed myself up for.

OMG I am really doing this!

Congrats! This is a really important first step and fit is important.

I just finished my data collection for my dissertation. I love my chair because she keeps me motivated. Also, she was really good about navigating the department politics about who else should be on the committee.

Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone. I spent a good bit of time the last two days writing up what he wanted for an initial proposal and reworking my schedule a little to spread the work out better over the next two years. So much to do, I am but also excited.

I also talked to a friend/mentor who is a few years ahead of me (and ABD so maybe not the best choice haha) and he walked me through thinking about some of this and the politics of our department and that helped a lot. I feel good about my potential faculty team, now to find the third person outside the university to complete my committee...
