Okay...so I want to first say that I LOVE my job and am thankful every day for it. I make decent money and have amazing benefits so this isn't really all that big of a deal.

BUT....I just have a tiny complaint.

I have been here almost 2 years... and when I started they put me in a cubicle.... okay...that's fine. I've never had my own office before but they said we will be moving into a new office building the next year and then I would get an office. COOL. Well... a one year move has turned into a possible 3 or 4 or 5 year away move. I have watched new employees come and go and all of them have gotten offices that have opened up. I have seen them move people from one office to the next before. Never once have they offered to move me to one.

I have the same job title as my peers.... Senior Accountant and yet I am the 1st one to do the "crap work" such as filing.....scanning... etc. I don't mind these tasks and like I said....I will continue to do them with a smile on my face because I am very grateful to have my job at all! But, it does kinda make me feel "Less than" important. I actually remember a lady one day coming in here...over a year after I started.... and she called me a secretary....and one of my coworkers corrected her and said I was a senior accountant too....and she was like, "OH, I am sorry! I had no idea!" UGH....

There are times in my profession when I do responsibilities that make me feel smart and I'm proud of my work... and then there are the Pee-on tasks...

I have a very underlying desire and need to feel appreciated and needed and sometimes I feel like anyone could do what I do.... half of the time anyways. The other half of the time, my expertise is actually useful.

Okay....I am done complaining now. I have a great job....great coworkers... great benefits.... and I should be thankful for what I DO have. I just needed to get that feeling off my chest so I can move on.

Thanks for listening.

The cubicle thing aside (I could see how that's annoying, though)... have you told your boss that you feel you have more capacity? That may prompt them to send more interesting work your way.

It's past time to say something, both about the cubicle and the secretarial duties.

But here's the thing, don't ever go in with a problem without a solution.

So the problem:

1. You are in a cubicle and it gives the appearance of being a secretary.

2. Because of where you sit, and your willingness to do scut work, the impression has become that ALL of the scut work should fall to you, and in fact, people new to the office often think you are a secretary.

The solution:

Ideally, your own office (the next time one becomes available - the cube should always go to the new person) and an equitable distribution of scut work, e.g. everyone should be responsible for their own filing or the duties should be divied up and shared (e.g. in my job, we have a daily roster that the team lead puts together and all the crap jobs are divided up amongst us, so some days I do none, some days I do one thing, some days another on an ever rotating basis).

Point to where your performance shows you are on par with your colleagues but sadly the office situation plus the extra stuff is giving the appearance to many that you aren't. Say you were just going to live with it when you thought the new office was imminent but now that it looks delayed, well, the status quo is uncomfortable for you and you'd like a little consideration.

Good luck! Quality of life at work is important. You don't get graded, it's not school, you don't get rewarded without asking.

You are a Senior Accountant? I am not sure where you live, but there is a lot of demand for your level of experience and it pays more.

I am an entry level Accountant and I will be relocating for the better pay. Do you have your CPA?

I guess my suggestion would be to look for a new job. There is plenty out here for accountants.... www.indeed.com

I don't have my CPA. I had intended on getting it but work in private accounting so there was no demand for it in my position. Now with a toddler, it will be a while before I can find the time to study for it. Where do you live?

I would have to make some serious money to justify moving away from my family.

I live in the Northeast Region but am trying to relocate to DC... I see you are in Virginia. That is fairly close to DC and senior accountants make 60K plus. I definitely understand not wanting to move far from family... But put it like this... There are perks to relocating, if you are able.

More money, new selection of men, more opportunities.

Make your current situation work for you, but consider it for the future, especially when your daughter can go to a full time preschool.

Oh and getting your CPA will definitely help. I am going to start studying for mine, even if I don't professionally use it. Your never know when it will come in handy as a deciding factor in employment. Once you pass the exam, no one can take that away from you. And it may keep your mind mentally busy to think about other things such as dating.

Set personal goals and start the process to achieve them. When you are too busy to think, you will see the loneliness disappears.
