DD wants to take a road trip to Boston with her boyfriend. I know there are some really nice (expensive) areas to stay in that area. Does anyone know where they can stay where it's less expensive, and still easy access to the historical, touristy areas?

She'll be driving, but from what I remember about Boston between the public trans system and walking everything is pretty easily accessible, so I guess she can park her car at the hotel and leave it if she needs to.

I know there is either a Marriott or Residence Inn in Dedham that is just a couple blocks to the commuter rail. However, it would be easier for them to be on the subway lines, as those run more frequently. You might try searching in Braintree or Quincy.

I am working later tonight but I will gather some information for her. I can mail her a bunch of brochures if she would like.

Also if she stays on route 1 in Westwood/Dedham there is a commuter right on University Ave in Westwood that would drop them off at South Station....from there easy to get around.

Does she know what she/he wants to see yet?

I will PM you my cell too, if there was an emergency she would at least have someone that resembles an adult able to get to her.

Make sure they do the Freedom Trail tour. Also make sure they eat at The Parish Café on Boylston...its flipping AWESOME!!! And really unique with how the created the menu

I dont' have any advice on the more economic hotels, but I would be happy to pass on as much touristy information I can

She wants to go the first week of June. This is her trip before she gets serious about getting her first 'I'm a grownup now' job.

DS and Cat, thanks for the information. Her bf is a history lover so whatever is cheap and interesting is what they're trying to see. She's a nature lover, and open to whatever...museums, trails, etc. I know she did mention the freedom trail tour.

AN, I would try Orbitz and Expedia etc. You can catch some good deals and we've always stayed right near the Commons within walking distance of a good many things with a fairly decent rate. I don't know what her budget is, but our Spring weekend trips were pretty reasonable.

Her budget is as little as possible, lol. She has about $800. They want to do Boston and then go to Newport, RI for a few days afterwards. I guess it'll be a week or less. The cost will be split 50/50. She has a tiny car so gas will be not terrible from here.

There's a Red Roof Inn in Salem. That's under $70 a night, but she would have to drive in to Boston if she wanted to see the sites.

Salem is cool to visit. There's also Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II.

We took the train to Salem...$7.00 round trip and about a 45 minute train ride.

Salem was very nice...lots to see and a good walking town

She should check AirBnB! One of the filters is for public transit, I think. You can often find a private apartment for a fraction of what you'd be paying for a hotel, and then you have a kitchen so you can save money on things like breakfast, snacks, drinks in the evening, etc. too.

Some thoughts...

For a splurge dinner, Café Nuovo or Al Forno in Providence - may be better than anything in Boston (but I'm prejudiced)

Faneuil Hall in Boston.

10 mile drive in Newport. Also Thames street and Touro Synagogue. Also Bellevue Ave for how the 1% used to live.

For fried clams, Flo's or Sportsmen's on 'the island' in Portsmouth.

I'm a Bostonian; The Ramada on Morrisey Blvd. in Dorchester has bus service to the airport and/or the local subway. The bus runs every 15 minutes or so and she'll have direct access to all of Boston from that red line train. She can also access any commuter rail she would like to use by taking the red line to either north or south stations.

I've stayed there a number of times while trying to evict crazy tenants but living in our retirment cottage. It serves a full breakfast free of charge and you can fill up for the day if you choose. They also have a pool and are pet friendly too. Free wifi. Lots of amenities and friendly.

Hope they have a blast! I love and miss my hometown.

Also tell them to go into Harvard Square. Lots of street musicians, a good pub and beautiful architecture. I love just taking a walk through Harvard Yard.

There are sailboats available to the public on the Charles River. I believe they're inexpensive and accessible by the T.

The Rose Kennedy Greenway was recently completed down near the waterfront and is a nice place to walk and see the sights. It is within walking distance from Fanuil Hall and the old Statehouse. Also near the North End, the old Italian neighborhood with great restaurants and bakeries. The Old North Church of Paul Revere fame.

The Swan boats are a must see in the Boston Garden and the statues of the Make Way for Ducklings children's book.

If history is their thing I'd also recommend going to the Battle Green in Lexington and Minuteman Park. I think there is a train connection there. The commuter rails or trsins link up to the subway system or the T as it's called.

I'm going to second trying Air B&B as well. We paid a fraction of a hotel room for an apartment in a Queen Anne house within walking distance of the metro and Cambridge. We both LOVE Boston. We have relatives up by the NH border, so we'll fly into Boston, take public transportation and stay for a couple of days, take the train to our relatives, and repeat on the way back to Logan Airport.

Neat little pub right off of the commons called the Hub Pub. Lovely staff and locals. We stop in there every time we go through Boston. Also the Haymarket Farmer's Market is really a neat stop. Look at the ground there are bronze vegetable & fruit "peels" on the streets! Dirty Nelly's is a great little dive bar to rest up from the market, and right around back is the Boston Stone.

There's a Holiday Inn Express in Middletown, RI that's reasonable. It even includes breakfast, and it's only a few miles to Newport and the beaches and the mansions.

Second beach (Sachuest) is best, and there is a wildlife sanctuary at the end of it.

Definitely do the Cliff Walk. There's free street parking down many of the side streets off of Bellevue.
