Does anyone know how to look at a computer that is password protected? Cannot break the PW, don't know what to do. Need to see some old emails if I can, and make sure there are no new ones (which I am suspecting).

You can pull out the hard drive and put it into a portable USB enclosure, and plug that into another computer. You should then be able to read the files if it's not encrypted.

Sounds complicated but not too hard.

If the emails are on an internet provider (gmail, etc) then this won't help much, you probably will need the passwords to access that.

You could ask him for the password and if he refuses then just assume the worst.

This. In R, no one gets to have password protected stuff. Or I'm outta here.

exactly. a WS has a right to privacy. they can close the bathroom door when they use the toilet. they lost their right to "secrets" as soon as they committed betrayal.

I'm with the majority here. Tell him complete transparency is part of recovery, all passwords or GTFO!!!

If the emails are on an internet provider (gmail, etc) then this won't help much, you probably will need the passwords to access that.

Unless you use Outlook or some other email client that downloads them to the PC.

I'd sit his sorry ass at the computer and MAKE him put in the password. Then I'd make sure we DELETED it in the user profile section.

Then I'd kick him out of the chair and sit down go through it with a fine-tooth comb.

Lastly, I'D password protect the whole damned thing down in the BIOS so he can't even BOOT past the initial boot-up screen.

Cheaters who are TRULY remorseful don't keep hiding things. Seems your husband still has a lot to hide.

I should have been clearer in my original post. This is his work computer, required to have a PW. His personal computer, cell, etc. all have had their PW's passed on to me. But I suspect there is a LOT of data on his work computer; I don't have regular access to it, and the PW he gave me doesn't work. . . For sure, I can't take out his hard drive lol. I guess I'm wondering if there's spyware available that can remotely be installed and truly works???

Tell him to give you a password that works.

No one will know you are looking at it unless HE tells them.

I have work devices and passwords, believe me nobody cares if my wife looks at them, they don't think she's going to be selling any corporate secrets.

Yep. My husband also shares his work password. Make him tell it to you, then log in immediately. If he is still cheating, this is what will happen: he'll say no, then the next day he will say ok. In between he will have deleted everything.

I have had my husband's work password, both to his emails and voicemails, since D-Day in 2005.

I'd ask him for the password, and if he is not willing to give it to you, then he is not willing to allow you the truth which is critical to R.

Delilah - when you ask for a WORKING password (and not the one he gave you that he knows DOESN'T work), make sure he's RIGHT NEXT TO YOU.

If you do it during the day or text him while he's at work, etc. etc. all he's going to do is clean that thing up from top to bottom before he brings it home.

Never tip your hand.

Wait until he - and the computer - are RIGHT in front of you and then demand the password.

Is this a computer that he/you purchased for work-related tasks, or a work-supplied computer?

If the latter, be careful in what you do there. Depending on the industry, unauthorized (ie. "non-employee") access to company computers can lose the company contracts or can be in violation of federal laws that carry pretty hefty penalties.
