I can understand your skepticism, but please be reassured. I know MH personally, and I can guarantee there is no greed nor malice in these changes. I haven't spoken to him about these changes, but I do know the industry.
The fact is, the custom-written software that produces this page is old. Maintenance on old code is hard. And you can't really win the maintenance game.
Let me explain a bit (I'm a software engineer, by the way). Unless something is perfect, it will eventually need updating. And very little in the world of computers is perfect.
There are internal reasons, like bugs and database performance. There are external technical reasons, like browser changes, or even major changes to the underlying web technology and HTML language definitions. And there are commercial reasons, like Google ads and trying to maintain relevance in Google searches (Search Engine Optimization).
When this website was originally developed, HTML was in it's 3rd generation. We're up to 5th now (I think. It might even be higher.) The only browsers you had to code for were IE and Mozilla. Now there's Safari, Brave, Opera, Chrome, and more.
Google will ignore sites that are sufficiently outdated. That means less income and, more importantly, people who need help won't find the site.
I could go on and on, but I'll end with the fact that there are some people who come here for help and can't deal with the fact that the site looks a bit dated. It's not splashy, it's not set up for disabled people, it's not like their iphone apps.
For me, being an old-timer, I only use the internet for content, not appearance, but then, I watch black-and-white movies, too.
As much as I may dislike it, change is necessary.
