Have you read any of Susan Grant's stuff? Any good?

Never heard of it, but will check it out. =)

I started on the first book of the Psy-Changelings series by Nalini Singh and it was good (a little much w/ mommy issues, but still) but it was a little romance-heavy, plot-light for me, but if you're looking for romance heavy you'd love it.

Read some descriptions of the Susan Grant stuff and huh, it sounds like she's got heroes who are basically Alex from The Last Starfighter returned to Earth. That interests me. Hmm. Will purchase.

Half Price Books is one of my favorite stores. Their paranormal romance section is pretty good.

Oh, sure. I've been just about ready to start since about 1993.

I actuallly just read the 5th Sookie book on vacation. I think it was the Dead as a Doornail one, but the names all sound so much alike.

I really enjoy them, they are fun and easy reads.

I love Eric, but I dont feel like in the series they give him as much personality as he has in the books.

I just downloaded the first book onto my Kindle I haven't started reading it yet.

I don't like the way they've interpreted Pam, either. At least, what I saw, just wandering around in a corset. Yawn. Pam in the books dressed like a soccer mom from 1997. That's what's hilarious about picturing her as Eric's right hand man. There she is in her powder blue twinset and khaki capris with blood around her mouth beside the Viking god on this throne up in here.

I love Pam! I always snicker when Sookie describes her outfits... and I loved her little hookup with Amelia. The lesbian vampire soccer-mom!

After reading all the exciting stuff that happens in the later books, I read book 2 in about 2 days and have started book 3.

This series ramps up pretty quickly after you read the first book. Lots of interesting characters!

One thing I appreciate the most about the series in comparison to others in the genre is that there is an argument for *why* S--kie is a supernatural dude magnet. An actual logical reason built into the mythology of that world.

If you're going to write a lead who has a harem of more than...well, two is safe, but three is the *max*...unless the harem is full of not particularly remarkable guys, I'm going to need some reason beyond "She's the lead" to justify this excessive male interest. Preferably, a reason that doesn't come way too late and doesn't make me gag (Anita Blake, I'm looking at you).

I guess that part has either gone over my head or I haven't come to it yet. For now, all I'm getting is that she is blonde, bosom-y, and tanned--that seems to be a pretty effective magnet.

And "blonde, big boobed, tan" would be plenty if it was a men's adventure novel. It's not. It's written for a female audience and it's first person, even. If you're going to have a POV character who is going to be the primary object of interest to a half dozen guys, like to the exclusion of other females, okay, but convince me why. I need to know why any young cute blonde wouldn't do, and the author gives a reason why it has to be this specific young cute blonde, but while she hints at it, I don't think she comes out with it for about 4 books or so.

So, answering the question "What the fuck is so fabulous about *her*, that she should be driving 1000 year old Viking vampires to distraction? Seriously, what?" is important, and I received a satisfactory answer here. That rarely happens.

That drives me nuts about Anita Blake, more than any of the other issues with the series, actually. This bothered me first. Anita is not particularly attractive, she thinks she's tougher than she is, for some reason she feels compelled to describe everything she's wearing every day to me even though every day she wears jeans or cut-offs and a polo shirt and every night she wears a black cocktail dress. She thinks she's witty but she's not. She thinks her remarks are clever but they're not. For some unknown reason instead of putting the verbal smackdown on her or ignoring her entirely, like 50 guys just tolerate her verbal abuse which is not particularly funny and wouldn't take anyone aback at all, ever. You don't have to argue to me why 2 guys would put up with you or be very attracted to you, but you do have to explain why 2 supernatural 1000 year old guys put up with you and are attracted to you, much less 50. What is so great about you? What?!

I just started number four. Have been tearing through these books so quickly, I'm going to need some recommendations on what series to tackle next.

Well, it explains for sure why she's so popular with vampires. I guess it affects the <gross> weres </gross> too.

It also explains why Jason's popular even though he's herpes on legs.

Well, Anita is Laurell (don't forget the second 'l' that makes her special and different!), and Laurell is a flaming narcissist on a stick. Or a dick, or several as the case may be.

I greatly enjoyed the first five or so Anita Blake books (remember Sigmund?) but they absolutely broke at "Narcissus in Chains." This is when the loathsome doormat Micah appeared, as well as the ardeur, a flimsier and stoopiter device I have never encountered. She might as well have started enclosing a tape of "boom chicka pow pow" with each book after that. I have heard, though can't be bothered to verify, that the change in the books was concurrent with her divorce from her first husband, whom we may understand to be Richard, thinly disguised and now serving as someone to be mocked, what with his normal emotional make up and all. Feh. I'm ticked, because the disintegration of this series has robbed me of reliable bathtub reading.

I am enjoying Sookie et al (hate the series, but that's because I'm intolerant of deviation from how *I* think characters, places, etc. should be portrayed, to say nothing of storylines. Tara and Sam? Just...no). Will check out Susan Grant, because I resent being in the position of waiting for authors to crank out the next book. :)

Just keep throwing out the recommendations. I will probably be done with Sookie et al by the end of the week!

Yeah, I know Anita is the Mary Sue to end all Mary Sues. I liked through Blue Moon + Obsidian Butterfly, the latter because it's Edward-centric and I love Edward. I'd like to hire him to kill Anita. Her crimes are legion, of course, but mainly for having the nerve to dictate to Jean-Claude and Asher when, where, and how they could hook up. They have been in love for half a millennia, GET OUT OF THEIR WAY BITCH, they don't have to ask your stupid permission.

The hate, it burns.

The next Charlaine Harris Sookie book is due out in May. The next season of True Blood should be in June. The reason for the attraction for Sookie is VERY interesting... I wonder where she will be headed with that one...

Re: Tara and Sam. I guess it doesn't bother me because the tv character has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the book character, so I only briefly kind of go "Is Tara such a great name that they couldn't just pick another name for this entirely new character? Sara? Kara?" but the actual Tara/Sam thing didn't bug.

Then again I only made it about 4 eps into the tv series due to previously identified issues.

I just wish LKH knew something about BDSM. Never in my entire life have I heard someone blather so much about BDSM yet know so little about it. Does she live in a Vampire LARP in 1994? *I* don't know all that much about BDSM but I know more than *that*, and much of that I learned at, well...Vampire LARPs in 1994.

Of course except for Asher and Damien the rest of the guys in the books can DIAF anyway, since they've all gotten so freaking petite and girly anyway. I don't even want to read about *female* characters who are 5' tall and have ankle length red hair and wear little red running shorts and nothing else, much less males.

Damien interests me because of the obsessive thing and Asher because of the whole scarred face duality thing. The latter is a particular quirk of mine, not gonna lie. =)
