Come to think of it, I found out at 40 that I bat and play hockey lefty.

My kids told me.

He is only in fifth grade, so the desks are all just rectangular, not right or left.

Those "right handed" desk thingies used to drive me f*%king nuts in college.

My standard means of dealing with that:

Place the notebook on the right handed "desk" thingy. Cock my right foot on its side. Rest my left foot on my right foot (to get height). Rest my left elbow on my left knee for support (since the left arm rest didn't extend out that far)....and proceed to take notes.

Something else I have noticed about my “adaptive” behavior. When someone hands me a clipboard with a form to fill out….the first thing I do is remove the paperwork, turn it upside down and reclip it to the clipboard…thus avoiding having to work around the clip at the top of the board.

It occurs to me that my folks were VERY accommodating of my "handicap". They made sure I sat at location at the dinner table such that my elbows wouldn’t bump with other diners, my father searched long and hard for a left handed baseball glove and so on. Upon reflection…I realize how very important that was to me.

ETA: Among the many "handicaps" that a person has to deal with....being left handed is a cakewalk. I don't mean to suggest it's a life altering thing. I just find the way in which people adapt to whatever obstacles come their way rather fascinating. This just happens to be one with which I am familiar.

My father, one brother and one grand daughter (Ariel) are left handed.

Poor Ariel struggles because Belle and I have trouble teaching her things like tying shoes, writing, etc.

She'll figure it out and we just have to be patient and help her as best as we can.

Too bad I'm not close to the other leftys in my family. We could use their help.

I'm left, as are half the bunch. My father was and most of mother's family is. And here I am learning a new trick:

Something else I have noticed about my “adaptive” behavior. When someone hands me a clipboard with a form to fill out….the first thing I do is remove the paperwork, turn it upside down and reclip it to the clipboard…thus avoiding having to work around the clip at the top of the board.

Very cool, Kuwaited... I don't know why I never thought of doing that. Thanks!

How true!

I have to laugh my ass off thinking about all the creative ways I overcame the lefty in me... Hell, I could only play two places in the infield... Pitcher and first base...

Being a lefty really made me who I am and what I do.... I see things and understand things in a three dimensional world that most righties never will understand....

Not only am I a lefty but I'm also A.D.D..... Now that makes it interesting!

Let your boy do it his own way... We ALL find our own way... Lefty or righty....

Who knows? He might become a doctor!

If and when he had to use a pen for things (formal essays, check writing, filling out forms), I suggest the sharpie pen. It does not smear.
