You've got years and years ahead of you before you have to get crotchety about the weather.
You must have never been to MN in the winter.
I grew up in New England so I thought I was acclimated to the whole winter thing. Winter in MN is a whole nother level of awful. We got 5 feet of snow over a 2 week period this winter. In 2008 we had an ice storm that left us without power for 10 days followed by a foot of snow and my kids missed 3 weeks of school in a row that winter. And I still think the winters here are WAY better than winter in MN. ~shudder~

I used to do environmental inspections on a radar installation in Minnesota. One winter the tires of all the vehicles froze to the parking lot. Now That's cold! Plus, in the summertime there are horrendous thunderstorms as well as the possibility pf tornados, due to the really lovely humidity level. On the other hand, spring and fall are really nice - for a visit!
Be careful what you wish for the most - you may get it.

Born in MN and I have great memories of it as a kid. I think I'm acclimated to their weather because I open up the sunroof when it gets above twenty. I miss the sledding and skiing. I moved away when I was Eileen but still know my old phone and addresses from the Rochester area.

Moo? There's gotta be one HELL of a story there. That, or an epic typo/autocorrect.
dazd - I am a Native Iowan. I understand Minnesota winters, even though here we just call them "winters."
You can call me NIK

I live in MN, frigidfire, because my FWH was born and raised here. When there was an opportunity for a job transfer for FWH to move back here we took it because his father was ill. It was a good thing we did, too, because FWH's father passed away about 18 months after we moved here.
Now, my DD has married a Minnesota boy and they have my two grandsons, 3 y.o. and 4 month old. I can not move away from them (or my children) even though I hate the weather desperately.
Someday we hope to be "snowbirds". Move to the south during winter and come back for the other 3 seasons.
The Twin Cities is a wonderful city and isn't very far from Rochester. The arts, entertainment, music scene is very dynamic. The TC's have many interesting museums. And, lets not forget about the Mall of America! Of course, we have the Vikings that break our hearts every single year. The Twin games (and the St. Paul Saints, for that matter) are fun to go to. We have a new outdoor stadium for the Twins. BTW, the game that was scheduled to be played yesterday was postponed until August because the stadium was full of snow and ice. Hopefully by August the snow and ice will be gone.
We have 10,000 lakes good for fishing year round. It is beautiful. You will learn (you probably already know) how to make about 10,000 different hotdish's here, too. You betcha'!

Another consideration is mosquitos--MN is awful.
Not in the area where Mayo is!
Rochester is really lovely. I always kinda wanted to move down that way. (I live in the cities, just north of Rochester)
The winters in southern MN are much milder than northern MN.
The weather here is not really that bad. The most annoying thing about winter is the traffic, really. And poor snow removal. But traffic is not really an issue out in Rochester.
We have a pretty high standard of living here in MN. Housing is really affordable, so your paycheck goes a lot farther than in some parts of the country.
12/18/15 found out my now EX boyfriend was trolling CL for underage girls. From the cops. The fun never stops.

If you buy 40 acres of land ... don't you have to take care of it? That alone would dissuade me regardless of weather

Surprised to hear how many people on here live close to me! I grew up in Alaska, went to school in Fargo - so cold it hurt...
Now I live in the banana belt of Northern Iowa...haha!
That said, the winter has been sooo long! It's 35, raining and windy and I had bus duty today.
We are visiting my Mom in southern AZ next weekend and I am SO looking forward to it!
We are planning on retiring in southern Missouri or northern Arkansas.... we love being outside every day.
Can't really do that in MN...

rachel,
I love MO or KS. We thought about moving there also. I want out of Iowa, and I will not move back to MN because of the cold.
I love being outside also.
Today, it is 40 with thunderstroms, it is dark outside and it feels like a bone chilly night of fall. Sucks ASS!
