Update: things with puppy are SOOO much better!! First, whatever hormonally-induced meltdown I was experiencing when I started this thread has worked its way out of my system. I hate the "blame hormones" excuse for anything, but round about the 25th of every month, even at fully post-menopausal age 53, I still cry at everything. Throw a new, drawing-blood, biting puppy into that situation and look out.

Cobber is doing wonderfully! We got past the spaz-demon-alligator-with-fur mode by me deliberately keeping my hands away from him. It sounds simple, but it's amazing how much I wanted to just play with him and that would lead to bites all over. We use exercise poles, chew toys, and time outs when he's having a tantrum/meltdown of his own. AND I found a puppy daycare near work. I drop him off there, all wiggly, squirmy and fully of energy, and I pick him up later all sack-of-potatoes droopy and exhausted. It's great!

Yesterday was our first "hike". I kept it simple and short -- about .5 a mile -- and Cobber got his first taste of moving water at the local creek. He thought that was very fun. The currents are too strong there for swimming, so I'll be trying to find a pond for that.

Anyway, he and I are both still learning a lot, but it's been multiple days now without bite gashes to my flesh, which makes for a much happier puppy and owner.

I'm done here; sick of 2 x 4s

Bite him back!! ok I dont mean literally!!!! but think what a bitch (momma dog) alpha dog would do. They are clear to the point and get their message across! Ive watched momma dogs pick up and toss thier pups by the scruff of the neck. Ive seen them pinch the ears with thier teeth. Now let me be clear I am NOT suggesting you should be rough but you are the alpha personality in the house and puppies learn this very quickly. When my pups started to bite me during play time I would clasp thier muzzle while placing them on thier back on the ground. It IS possible to do this with out hurting them!!! If there is a yelp obviously too much! who could hurt a puppy on purpose?? The goal is to show the puppy you are in charge. Sometimes a low stern voice is all the puppy needs to recognize momma is pissed. Ive had puppies who thats all it took was a stern talking to. I have also had others that really needed an alpha dog that would take him down. Its amazing to watch how gentle a mature dog can be putting its mouth around the puppies neck, teeth and all, and pin it to the floor with not a peep comming out of the puppy. They get it! They are pack animals no matter how many owners put clothes on them . I wish you luck how ever you decide to resolve this and I'm very sorry you are having a rough day!

I'm so glad to hear things are better for you!

I remember when I first got my now 10yr old dog, he was 3 months old. Based on my and DH's schedules, I was with him alone a lot in the beginning. I would call my dad and actually cry because he was such a "Demon Dog" as I called him back then.

Anyways, I just wanted to say I'm glad things are better and that you decided to give it a shot. I think you'll be so happy you did!
