I grabbed each season on eBay for about $10 per season.

I'm reading book 3 on my Kindle right now so I have no idea how long it is (I'm 71% into the series. Based on the show I thought I was almost finished at 60%, but it keeps going and going. Is season 4 going to be the second half of book 3?

Season 4 will include parts from book 3 and possibly books 4 and 5 as well according to something I read George RR Martin said recently. Since the chapters don't happen chronologically in his books in relation to the other chapters necessarily, because they sometimes happen before or during parts of the story you've already read from other PoVs, it will be interesting to see how they fit that into the season next year.

I love the books! Even though in the later books there are a lot more characters, the books are written so well, you wouldn't mind rereading them until the new ones come out

The HBO series is a very good adaptation. I would recommend reading the book before the particular season that corresponds. I found that the inevitable changes/omissions that must come from an adaptation are very logical and understanding. The actors are fantastic and really got the characters, especially Tyrion!! OMG, it's like he walked out of the book!! He has become my absolutely favorite character, and the actor is superb!

I got pissed at the books after the 3rd or 4th one because he kept adding characters and just gave up. It felt like he completely lost where he was going with it. I also had issues with some stuff that won't bother other people, like after sixteen wars in four years and the entire peasant population raped, looted and pillaged to death, somehow there's still somebody bringing food in from the fields.

Really like the HBO adaptation though. A lot. It's pretty awesome.

I agree SG - the first two were awesome and the series has kind of bogged down since then. A Dance with Dragons just arrived in the mail, and I'm still super excited to read it, but I know it won't be anything like the first two.

I'm still holding off on watching the series until I finish reading the books.

StillGoing, I'm getting really upset with book 4 as well.

I heard GRRM kept adding in characters, but I wasn't expecting it to be so clunky. Why aren't they being integrated slowly with characters and plot lines that have already been introduced? It's so tangential I feel like I'm reading a spin-off.

I'm tempted to just skip ahead because I have no idea what is going on now and I really don't care.

I actually found Dance with Dragons to make books 3 and 4 and the sometimes sluggishness all worth it. I personally found it to be a fantastic book and most reminiscent of the excellence of book 1.

I dunno. Maybe he was a DM for a bunch of drunk assholes who never stuck to the adventure and always hared off after stupid shit like The Keg Of Endless Maple Syrup and he got used to introducing new main characters every other session because they were constantly getting killed.
